Probably the best explanation I've found of Trey's lead work I've found on the web, keep it coming brotha! A lot of this stuff I find myself doing subconsciously due to all the Phish I consume/play, but it's awesome to get the theory behind it to connect your brain to your fingers. This was awesome. I've been playing guitar about 20 years, admittedly am way behind where I could be if I practiced music, and drilled for real, and not didn't just dick around learning songs and noodling. I grew up on phish and memorized tons of songs along the way and I kind of would hit that 6th intuitively playing around on some phish tunes just because I felt it, and now I know why! What you've done here, instead of getting super technical or detailed on a given melody or solo(like, here is the YEM arpeggio), is distilled a PRINCIPLE that expresses that 'Treyness' . I have always found that great (highly effective) teaching comes from making principles simple, and this is a fun one to play with. Whether this is a teaching principle you work with, or just how you decided to go about this video, I got a lot out of it. It's opened up just a bit more freedom Thanks for what you do and if we ever get concerts back post covid mania, and I happen to bump into you at a show or on lot(west coast) I'll be sure to buy you a beer or a heady cheese quesadilla

Really great lesson. I always hear about "chord tones" and how to use them to build tension, but you've articulated it really clearly here. I was playing along and a lot of things started clicking- finally felt like I was getting out of that repetitive pentatonic noodle and into something with real structure. Cheers.

Nice jam. i saw Jerry Garcia for the first time and Phish for the first time within a couple month in 1989 and I have been trying to learn this stuff ever since... 63 Grateful Dead shows and 30 Phish shows later, I am still trying to learn this stuff :)

You come the closest to unlocking Trey's code... Very cool. It's amazing watching this how many similarities Trey has to Jerry's style yet places one or two notes which make him unique, especially when he inserts a core (chord?) note in place of the minor.

Right. Yes! Spectacular! OK. On my own I figured out both the maj. 6th and the interchanging from major to minor. (And vice-versa.) What was tremendous was your addition to the "timing" of Trey's phrasing. You are SO SPOT ON!! When I'm jamming, I never really thought about grouping themes around a standard time-frame. Such as every four bars. Nice. Annoyed to all get-out I missed that. Oh: subscribing. Definitely subscribing, Boss-man!! If you're ever in Central New York? Let's jam, brother!! ~Andy

Awesome!! Great concepts! I just have to take exception with something you said at the beginning. You do not need to learn a Phish song or any other artists songs note for note to play them out or anywhere. If you want to, cool, but I never do. I like to learn the general song and then use my own music sense and playing style to attempt to make them my own. Great work!!

I enjoyed the lesson very much! Really helped me get a grasp on the sounds I've been playing with in my head since being influenced by phish. Could you possibly do a video on the way that Trey often moves between scales on the neck? Specifically, the way he almost plays arpeggios on the top few strings past the 1st position scale before resolving on the 1 or the major 3rd in 4th position. I noticed when you changed from 1st to 4th position you sort of just jumped and I'd love to learn how Trey almost walks up the neck to seamlessly transition between those positions or resolve on a crescendo. I hope I explained that well haha.

Thank you for providing a good explanation of trey solo method. When it comes to compositions like Stash, Freezer, or Horn, I see these are just songs one has to learn note for note. The interplay between all the members means they know where the song is going at any time. They have the structure, but then fuck with it so hard live there is no way to keep up. I would like to know how Trey gets so much sustain in order to hold out one note for so long while the chords progress underneath like Squirming Coil

Question: you say use the Dorian (which has a flat third) and the minor pentatonic (also containing a flat third) but you also say use the chord tones of the C7 (which includes the major third). So, is both the major and minor third fair game for the solo? I get that the major six is the money note, but curious about those dang thirds! Thx again...

Sounds more like Garcia’s noodling than Treys. Garcia’s playing was very boxy at times, where asTrey is more linear. Constantly using half and whole step bends throughout even with his modal playing. For this progression he’d most likely be mixing major/minor pentatonic and mixolydian. Within all that he’d naturally be flirting with some Dorian notes. Your tone is also leaning heavenly in that direction as well. Cool channel I like the idea. I was gonna do a Similar Jam band/funk guitar thing years ago after having some success with my piano channel. But I gig out a lot these days. I feel bad when my subscribers ask for more lessons, but I just don’t have the time or energy. Keep it up though its all good stuff. I hope more people subscribe. If you ever wanna learn some keys just look up Tyler Thompson piano lessons. Got a few dead tunes in the mix.

Super interesting video stitch! Any chance you can address why c dorian typically means we are in the key of Bb, which would give us a 2 chord of C minor, but instead the 2 chord is C7, and we can solo over it just the same? How can we make chord changes like this in our own music?

Finally! Fantastic. I was just playing around with Dorian for Tweezer. Do you believe in an approach to go from tonal center to tonal center. Here it would be C to C, Tweezer A to A? Bad phrasing of my question, but are all licks starting and resolving on C here?

Dude, love your channel! Subscribed and Thank You! Could you discuss Trey's vibrato technique please? Most often I see the advice to anchor the space between the thumb and first finger on the neck and pivot there by rotating the forearm. From watching videos, that doesn't seem to me like what Trey is doing. Looks like he's more pushing his fingers up and down. Would love to hear your thoughts.

Stitch. KDF also sounds VERY similar to the Birds of a feather jam as both use Cm pent and C Dorian mode I believe. Can you basically just use this lesson for BOAF as well?

do you hit the notes randomly? I got the idea that you're climbing up the scale to accent the chord notes, but i couldnt figure if you hit those notes consistently. Hope my question makes sense haha

When you, or Trey, are doing this style of soloing in the C min pentatonic / C Dorian, and you're building up the tension with the C7 chord tones, are you also trying to hit the Bb chord tones over the Bb chord? Or not so much when doing this tension building thing.

Sooo many chord tones. C E G Bb over the C. Bb D F A over the Bb. The Bb gets a major 7th to harmonize with the Dorian 6th that Trey loves so much from the C. Or just do whatever feels right

or do you use both?... the minor pent has the flat third in it. c, eb, f, g, bb, c & (c7 =c,e,g,bb) ? does the major3, and flat 3 give the chromatic sound.... kind of like adding that 6. Sorry for all the q's This video is insanely awesome.
