It's #EqualPayDay2021 so let's unpack how tipped restaurant workers-mainly women, Black and brown folks-are still fighting for justice: dlvr.it/RwJ7Q5

Restaurant now sometimes divide tips between more employees because they collect enough tips for it. Tipping should be a choice and employees should earn what is accordingly and be tipped by its talent to do the job

New Zealand here.we don’t have tipping in our culture but I’m interested in what is the best approach to this insidious, unfair practise being exported by way of, for example, cruise ships which adopt the culture. We all know (or should, if we think about it and do the maths) that there are far better ways of negotiating a fair income for hard working, lowly paid staff but the question arises: how do those of us in non-tipping cultures (e.g. New Zealand, Iceland, Australia to name but a few) best support and develop tactics to stop the inroads from U.S. companies introducing the practise by stealth?

when I was a kid I thought tipping was humiliating to the receiver it's almost like saying u poor thing heres a dollar for ur bad life. I think the employer has to incorporate the waiters salary into the cost of the meal. so for instance if the hamburger would cost 5 now it should cost 6.50 and that way no tipping happens.

The prevailing argument against minimum wage for restaurant servers is that the restaurants couldn't afford it. Please remember two things: 1. Most of Europe pays their restaurant servers minimum wage and there are PLENTY of restaurants doing just fine (they just add the gratuity into the check and everyone knows this.... it's on the receipt) in fact, in some countries, tipping is an insult AND 2. Any business that cannot survive while paying the very people they require to operate a living wage, doesn't deserve to stay in business.

Hi man, sorry to burst your bubble but the as you increase the minimum wage, it actually makes it harder for poorer people to find a job......... Minimum wage effectively says to workers/employees, That if you can not produce at a rate higher than a minimum wage, than you don't deserve work....... If I join a company as a low skilled worker and I can only make the company 5 dollars an hour and the minimum wage is 15, then the minimum wage will make it illegal to hire me therefore making my only alternative to be unemployed.

There was a time when you made money in tips and earned a great income. today in 2022 - Tips offer nothing for a persons future, Nothing paid into Social Security leaving the person with nothing to retire on . The tipped worker loses . NJ has new labor laws yet many restaurants, bars and diners do not pay properly.. if serving - they work on $5.75 an hour plus tips. However, if they are answering phones, folding napkins, helping out in the kitchen, - they are supposed to be paid the minimum wage of $14.00 hour - ! Advise the owner of this - they flip out and tell you to leave ! Many servers do not know this law.. including paid time off and vacation time at $14.00 hour. This also applies to salon workers .. many brag about all that cash they earned, but at age 65, they have nothing in their accounts - then have to go to social services to offer housing, food, transportation and many other services - paid for by the tax payers, to pay for someone's poor planning ? The Tipped wage workers are still slave labors - that needs to end in the US.

This idea that tipping came about because former slaves were exploited by white bosses after emancipation, is utterly false. This idea is a result of one person's sloppy research cherry picking a few facts from an amateur social historian's book on the history of tipping, and viewing the past through modern lenses. The Pullman Company did hire a few former slaves to work for tips on the railroads, but they never had more than 20,000 porters working for them at their height. Factors ignored by this poor attempt to rewrite history include, the prevalence of black women working in non tipping domestic jobs right up to the Great Depression, the role of Prohibition in popularizing tipping at a time when restaurants were struggling, and the roll of Unionization in keeping Blacks out of manufacturing jobs. (Here it was workers afraid of losing their jobs to Blacks, not white bosses who didn't want to hire them.) Finally almost all tipped jobs were in the economically rich Northern cities, where a huge influx of European immigrants familiar with the European tipping system were entering service trades. The economically impoverished rural South could not support restaurants or hotels. And yet that is where the Black population of America stayed until the Great Migration north, starting in 1910 but really en mass through the 1930s when Jim Crow and Neo-Slavery where making life intolerable. News of manufacturing jobs out West and in the North spread to Southern Black communities thanks to the network of the Pullman Porters. Yes there are a great many articles attributing tipping as a legacy of slavery, but they all hinge on a single person's sloppy research. Also minimum wage legislation was embedded to prevent the abuses of women and children working in sweatshops. Minimum wage legislation was originally deemed unconstitutional, but FDR threatened to expand and pack the Supreme Court with liberal judges. Minimum wage legislation excluded service jobs because they were not engaged in cross state production. it was only in the 1960s, that service jobs got a minimum wage and it was set at 50% the national minimum wage because they made tips. The NRA was originally set up to help negotiate fair food prices for their members. that's why the were headquartered in Chicago, where food distribution was centered. it was until they relocated to Washington in the 1980s that they became active in lobbying government. Herman Caine was had of the NRA when they successful froze minimum wage for tipped workers sat $2.13 in 1993. How anyone can claim there is straight line from from slavery to this 1993 amendment to labor law is beyond me. Tipping is certainly racist, but not especially so, and not because of some tenuous link to the specter of slavery.

Here’s the deal. We have now have a tipping culture because of people who don’t tip? Why?? It’s simple. If restaurants are required to pay their workers 15.00 an hour instead of 2.13 an hour restaurants will be forced to raise their prices. Remember most restaurants are not owned by millionaires and most of them 90% of restaurants fail so let’s go back to non tippers. Why don’t they tip? The logical Reason is because they don’t want to pay more and if they want to pay more then most of them would not go out to eat anymore because it’s too expensive, therefore people lose their jobs and restaurants fail. My proposal is to pay them the 7.25 federal minimum plus tips and they make the minimum 7.25 regardless how much they get tipped. I don’t think that would hurt restaurants too much

This persons entire argument falls entirely on 2 things that tipping is only done in the US and the idea of tipping came only after slavery ended, both are lies. Go to any travel website and you see a section devoted only to tipping where, when, why, why not, how much at every destination around the world. Tipping only came about after slavery ended in the US 1865, while Shakespeare wasn’t the first author or only to discuss tipping he is known by everyone who walks the earth and unfortunately for this bit of nonsense he died 200 years before the end of slavery. The Play’s the Twelfth Night Much Ado About Nothing and the Merchant of Venice all have long monologues about the idea of pay someone extra to do the job they are already being paid for. Absolutely no ambiguity that’s tipping. People on both sides of every issue will lie it’s more important then ever we diligently look for the truth behind those lies. This is not good information she’s sharing it’s made up nonsense and unfortunately it’s like almost everything she says.

Why cant I just walk up to the kitchen and grab my own pizza and avoid the charge? I’ll wipe my own table and get my own water if I can’t afford to pay 12$ for my 10$ pizza? Do I miss out on y dinner cos I can’t pay a waitress? Why do I pay the waitress? I’m paying for pizza not wiping and walking. I think if I lived in America I would not eat out because of being forced to pay the wages of someone doing a job that I could do myself - why does it come down to us walking up to the counter to get our pizza ourselves or miss out on it totally.

Thanks you so much for the knowledge. Just learned about the racial element in America for tipping and that is so f*ckd and sad. Me personally, I never thought tipping to be a good system; not that I don't wanna compensate good service but because it seems to me an excuse for employers to not pay their workers properly. Also in Europe, from my experience, tipping is not really a thing like in the US, where it's a social pressure thing like oh u don't tip? u r a bad person blah blah... its silly. In fact, I saw often in Europe, servers would become offended when someone tipped them, seeing it as like 'I don't need your pity money, I make my own' type of vibe. And that to me is the appropriate vibe, but you have to pay your employees what they deserve first, so I'm all for that. I think all Americans would benefit from legislation being passed to ensure adequate compensation for labor: employers and employees alike.

've always said mimuim wage should ALSO based on years worked at the same job but I am not ok with a huge increase in base pay. 15 $ an hour to work at a fast food restaurant is ridiculous. You devalue my job I went to school for and my saving when you ask for a pay like that.

I'm sure waitresses will be very happy when they get $15/hour instead of $45-$60/hour that they make on tips. The angry women in the video are so busy being victims they forgot to learn basic math.

"Disparity does not equal discrimination" - Thomas Sowell. Next time you want to make a point, maybe don't choose two activists who deliberately ignore the details of how minimum wage works. Also, minimum wage is the most racist law in the book and has held back black communities.

Porters on trains were some of the highest paid and well-respected members of their communities. Unions in the 1910s through 1930s did finally get them the same money for positions. This video cherry picks one little fact here and there and tries to fabricate a whole story without actually knowing the real story. Just tell history how it actually happened. It doesn't need interpretation or a spin.
