Cool thing too is that the scene where they help John Wick up after he falls was not planned on. They all had a mutual respect and Keanu said that they needed a scene to show that, so they added it.

I read somewhere long ago that the director's main goal with Raid was actually to make the Raid 2 movie. But he didn't have the budget to make it. So he ended up making Raid: Redemption with the small budget he had and made Raid 2 later following the first movie's success.

Yeah The Raid 2 was supposed to be the follow up to Merantau with the working title of BERANDAL (translates to 'delinquent' or 'thug'). They ended up doing a prequel to the original story and called it The Raid.

Daz, I just rewatched Raid 2 yesterday with the director's commentary track and there was even more depth to the various characters as backstory. Both films are excellent but they have different pacing until it comes to the fight scenes. The director even showed where every cut was made in the prison fight "one shot".

yup. I think Keanu Reeves also regarded both Raid movie as one of his inspiration. That's why he always try to invite The Raid actor to some of his movie.

Fun fact: Dredd *is not* an imitation of Raid, despite their similarities. Raid was released first, but Dredd was written first.

@@07foxmulder Unlikely. The Raid was an Indonesian production. What are the chances that filmmakers doing a low budget movie would have an unreleased script what was probably being filmed at the time? Both took inspiration from Die Hard and both went with the concept of a crime lord ruling over a building. Despite the similarities, both are very different in execution while Dredd's building is a vast arcology, The Raid is a rundown claustrophobic slump. Both are great in their own way.

The Raid is one of the best action movies of all time. The Raid 2 actually manages to improve on the original at every level, including action, thrills, acting, plot, pacing, writing, and cinematography. It's like Godfather 2 or Empire Strikes Back or The Dark Knight-everything that was awesome about the original is just somehow BETTER in the sequel. You'll dig it.

Raid 2 was great, but unfortuanetly, the fight scenes and the tension of the first movie just couldnt be replicated in 2 due to the new atmosphere

Blue Sun I agree. The Raid 2, surprisingly, is almost like an art house movie. The set designs, story, characters, costumes, lighting... it’s all a little more experimental. It’s beautiful to look at and I believe the final product is exactly as intended, but the first Raid is a more straight forward comprehensive action flick.

Took my friends to the cinema to watch this masterpiece premiering in our city. It was us 3 and 2 other people. Nobody could leave even for a toilet break, glued to the screen. When it ended one of the other guys stood up looked around and asked "How the fuck is there not more people watching this!?"

Leandro Santos I hated that fight in John Wick 3. Those two man are really great, but in JW 3 their fight were really bad compared to their earlier movies. I don't know if their style were too much for keanu or for the director, but that fight does not give them justice.

The raid is a perfect movie, in that it knows what it wants to be and achieves it with practically zero wasted time. I also love how he flees from a gun, showing you that guns are just as deadly in the movie as in real life. I prefer raid redemption over raid 2, just because of how tight it is.

Iko Uwais is the real deal. He's an amazing fighter and has a great screen presence. The Raid, and especially The Raid 2, are some of the best action movies of the last 10 years. So much work went into these films it's crazy. One of the stunt men really fell off one of the ledges during the shoot out when they first go in the building. He had to spend 6 months in the hospital recovering and when he got out he went back and said let's refilm the scene,we can do it better. That's the kind of dedication that reminds me of when Gainax was just starting out and was hungry to make a name for themselves with The Royal Space Force.

Mad Dog was a fcuking SAVAGE!!! It bummed me out when he killed the commanding officer though. I was really hoping he would live. He was a beast too! It's funny Mad dog has always been the only person everyone remembers his name lol. I was disappointed how they used him in John Wick 3.

Can't remember her name but the woman in it who played Hammer Girl in TR2 was brilliant in the film, i'm shocked Hollywood hasn't come knocking on her door as she's easily one of the best action stars out there. Considering Hollywood is obsessed with "strong kick ass women" right now its just amazing they haven't seen her talent and cast her in a big action film.

Ehhh... Hate to say it, but that scene was immersion breaking for me. Too many times in jw3 i couldnt help notice people "waiting" for him, keanus good an all but it was too much, too many enemies pulling their speed and getting up WAY too slow... the fight against these two nutters was the worst offender. They too good for him 😬

They didn't have Keanu defeat them with some stupidly transparent plot device, and the fact they just decided to part ways instead of fighting to the death shows proper respect to these guys who legit deserve more credit.

I don't think the way they had John Wick defeat the duo was the normal bs we usually see. I think they were trying to present John Wick to be of Eastern European descent (I'm sorry if I'm getting this wrong). And one of the ways the did this was by showing him fight using combat sambo, which emphasizes grappling elements that a lot of traditional martial artists or great strikers struggle with. Conor McGregor vs Khabib Nurmagomedov is a popular example of this.

Keith Chin both Raid’s are great. Action should be done in wide shots, and John Wick, Brawl In Cell Block 99, and Dredd do this very well.

As an Indonesian fan of movies, I cried when Rama fought multiple thugs with his brand of Silat coz it was so, so good, I couldn't believe it. In Jakarta, my wife and I used to live in the same Apartment building with Iko Uwais's former girlfriend and I met him at the lobby, both of us in our cars as we were looking for parking space. I said to him as I rolled down the windows: Hey brother, The Raid was sssick, I'm so proud of you' He smiled, said thanks while doing 🙏 and was very humble about it

Sadly, The Raid 3 won’t happen. From a interview with the director: The filmmaker opened up about why Rama wouldn’t have led The Raid 3. “I couldn't fathom of another fucking reason why he would put his life at risk and separate himself from his fucking wife and kid again,” he admits. “I was like, it can't be about Rama. It just can't, because if he does something to pull himself away from his poor fucking wife and kid again, I'd be like, ‘Hmm, you sort of deserve to die now really. Take some responsibility and be a father for a change!’” As it turns out, Rama’s final line at the end of The Raid 2, ‘I’m done’, proved prophetic. “It’s a very convenient last line of dialogue to have,” Evans laughs.

Not to Milk a Cow to Death, however, I reckon a 3rd COULD work with Rama, providing he takes his wife and child on a holiday, but the bad guys find out about it and where he stays in a hotel, they lock down the entire hotel, kidnap his kid, then his wife and either Ransom them and he has to fight his way through or he had to just fight his way through all the bad guys to get his wife and child back. We could have a gym room fight, sauna fight, banquette fight, library fight, fights in every inch of the complex. I'd be down to watch!

I feel like the closest I got to that was when I was watching the first Silent Hill movie. I was definitely laughing through, but not because I found the movie funny or laughingly bad or anything - no, I was laugh with sheer glee. I remember that specifically because when the group I went with was talking about it afterward, one of them mentioned how there was some asshole in the audience laughing during the deaths and scary parts, not knowing that it was me he was talking about.

@@ohboi994 I would have to go back and remember a lot of the older movies that I used to watch but if you want to watch a "newer movie" IP Man is pretty good from what I remember. And even though it is a bit cheesey and cartooney, I really enjoy watching Kung Fu Hustle. Another that comes to mind is Jet Li's Fearless. And of course Seven Samurai is a must if you have never seen it (The original). I could probably remember more but that is what I can list from memory.

That fight at the end is especially fantastic because if you described it as a two on one to someone who hasn't seen the movie, they might think that Rama has to fight two people himself. It's rare that it's actually the good guys having to team up on a baddie who's so badass he's still kicking the crap out of them. It makes the last fight really tense.

Great video as always Jeremy, but to get off topic real quick can I just say how timeless your review of the red wedding is. I never used to pay any attention to Game of Thrones when it was on for whatever reason, I guess the trend just missed me. However I started binging it during the quarantine (somehow avoided spoilers this entire time) and just recently got to the red wedding. Shit shocked me so hard I had to watch like 6 year old reaction videos to it and I watched yours and you were just so spot on with your take. I swear everything you said in that video matched my exact reaction during the episode lmao.

Sadly I read just the other day the director said it's unlikely there will be a third, he did however just release a TV show, gangs of London, which has his signature action, it's closer to raid 2 with the gangland rivalries and deeper story, great so far

I went to the theaters to see this movie when it came out. Always thought is was underrated. Was about 10 people in the theater when I went. Glad it finally got the recognition it deserves in my opinion.

Nice review, The Raid: Redemption is a great movie. The Raid 2 is (arguably) the best martial arts movie ever made and usually I would say/write something like "I envy you for being able to watch the movie for the first time" to someone who hasn't watched it yet. But watching that movie is not just breathtaking the 1st time, it stays breathtaking even after many many viewings. It's an incredible achievement and I'm looking forward to the review!

One thing to keep in mind Jeremy, the bad guy in the 2v1 is also in the second film even though he died. But he plays a different character. He’s the fight choreographer in both films

There is a scene in The Raid 2 that after seeing it you have to see how they filmed it. In a car chase the camera starts on the outside of one side of the car, goes in a window then goes out the other side of the car.....with no cuts. It was actually pretty cool how they filmed it.

It's because of THAT scene that I viewed a lot of the car chase in 'Extraction' in terms of attempting to figure out how they filmed it. Meanwhile, I was wrong and the director was strapped to the hood of a car!

Yes and no. I prefer the raid 2 over the first but some of my friends didn't like the focus on story in the sequel because they liked how direct the first movie was. I think the story is great in the sequel and gives great purpose to why Rama is fighting for his life. There's some genuinely well written moments in the sequel that I really appreciated but the fight scenes are where the sequel is better imo.

Dredd was technically filmed a year before The Raid, but post-production took longer for obvious reasons. Also, both films are basically the same as Die Hard, so that whole argument is useless.

The Raid 2 is amazing. One of my all-time favorite movies. I feel it has better action, cinematography, and especially story. The story is somewhat complex and very interesting, plus the fights are amazing once again. You won't be disappointed. The Raid 2 is actually the movie Gareth Evans wanted to make originally (he had the story thought out for the 2nd already), but couldn't get the budget for it and made The Raid 1 to "prove himself," I guess, and get the funds for the 2nd one, which is why the 1st one has a simple story I think. It's a similar situation as Damien Chazelle with Whiplash and La La Land.
