I wish you and I could sit down over a pot of coffee and talk about the 1960s. 1967 was a pivotal year for rock music and the first year of true psychedelic music that started gaining traction in 1966. In 1967 the Monterey Pop Festival made household names out of Hendrix, Joplin, Otis Redding (who died a few months later) and The Who and it also saw the debut album of The Doors. That was also the year of The summer of love, Moby Grape, Arlo Guthrie's "Alice's Restaurant," Buffalo Springfield's "For What It's Worth," Sgt Pepper, The Mothers of Invention, two albums by the Stones; one in in January and then again in December.... okay, you get the idea. For those who were older teenagers and young adults it was a bountiful harvest of music but not all of the younger kids, say those aged 11 to 15 were ready to embrace the new direction. They were safe in the world of the Monkees and didn't want to get involved with the drug culture but still needed to feel they were part of something. *_In my opinion_* the Cowsills and this song gave them the step upwards they wanted. Someone mentioned they later did the song "Hair" in 1969 but the play opened in 1967 so it was a time of changes in many of the arts as it was also the year of the movie The Graduate with a soundtrack by Simon and Garfunkel. 1968 would be the first big year of what is termed Bubblegum music and I don't think anyone will disagree that the Cowsills were light years ahead of "Yummy Yummy Yummy" and later the Archies' "Sugar Sugar." The Cowsills were a stepping stone for kids to go from The Monkees to Jefferson Airplane as this song is somewhat psychedelic and had the popular "flower power" theme but without the harder edge of those bands that were really into drugs.
