My personal recommendation is Pokemon Fool's Gold, it follows the classical romhack formula to an extent, but it's fairly unusual in that it's GBC rather than GBA. It features a grandiose 3 regions of content including and expanding on the GBC Johto and Kanto, each with regional forms of many pokemon which add up to around 700 I think. The core gimmick is that all pokemon have different types from the original, and its fully illustrated with new sprites for every element-changed pokemon and regional variant. There's also a password system built into the rom itself for doing various challenge runs or changing up the game on repeat playthroughs in some unusual way. It's easily one of my favorite romhacks of recent time, and it's quite underrated because it came out around the same time as Infinite Fusion, so the public eye appears to have missed it. It is practically Pokemon Crystal Deluxe, hahah.

Ironically, BDSP seems like the future of romhacking because of how easily it is to edit those games because they are made in Unity. I wanted to make a Colosseum remake in that engine but it's just so much work 😅

I've only played one pokemon romhack so far: pokemon abstract (actually not done yet) I was looking for a new pokemon game to play, but knew scarlet and violet wouldn't satisfy me so I've looked for something that stayed close to the original formula, but had a completley new region and characters I'm having so much fun with it, it's really like playing the first four generations back in the days in terms of experience if anybody has suggestions, keep em coming

Only problem with romhacks is some of them are so good it spoils you and you can't go back to regular games. I have become a rom snob since playing Pkmn Team Rocket Edition. omg so good man.

I'm glad there is a revolution of romhacks that are making games much more varied. Difficulty romhacks are fun but the game can get very annoying when you have to synergize every facet of your team to counter every trainer you find. i much prefer "expanded" pokemon games that are slightly more difficult than base. Or, if there is demanding battles, features like unbound's sandbox mode that minimize grinding so you can immediately edit your team if you notice flaws

It's not new, but Pokémon Orange is fantastic.

these are fangames, not romhacks, but if you like level caps, a difficulty curve, and some cool unique mechanics, pokemon reborn and pokemon rejuvenation are bar none the best non-official pokemon games out there, imo
