Sorry to get out of text but, I'm soliciting prayers for Tom Van Steenbergen who suffered a horrific crash in yesterday's Red Bull Rampage. I figured this was the best place to come. If you can give a little prayer, it will mean the world. God bless!

Crazy... My childhood friend won one of these when we were younger from the local dealer He rode the wheels off that thing and literally destroyed it from the hard life he gave it.

RX-50 was my first street motorcycle. I bought it brand new (not raffled) at Cycle Springs Yamaha in Palm Harbor, Fl 1983. I believe it was $649. Incredibly reliable, I rode the hell out of it. Wow the memories…..top speed was about 50 mph when I weighed 115lbs 😎.

Recently sold my 1983 RX50 production version (came with the chrome exhaust among other differences). Only 854 miles on it. The only reason I remember this bike was of course from my middle school days a buddy of mine had one. He was the second owner and we rode the snot out of that bike!

Owned this bike. Had 350 miles on it and sold it in 1995 for $200. My uncle won the local raffle for it. This thing is loud like a gas string trimmer. Wrought limit of 150 as well.

I wish I would have realized what I had when I was younger. I had one of these bikes, too poor to buy a dirtbike but some friend sold me an 83 Midnight Special 50 just like this for $50. I used it as a dirtbike for years. I rode the hell out of it. I end up trading it off about 10 years ago still working. It was nice, but "dirtbike" took its toll on it.

Loads in England in the 80s, same motor as the rd50m, put a big bore kit 60cc on mine, went from 30mph to 50 laid flat 🤣😎👍

yeah I had one had a big bore on it took the sausage out the exhaust cos I couldn't afford a micron and it did 50 mph . chopper fizzy chicken

My wife and I still have one! We bought in new in the box in 1985. The black with gold trim one. Just rode it today.

I loved my RX50 in black and gold. My best friend bought one also. Jim's Import Yamaha had two for sale. (Never saw or heard of any raffle, I traded in a Yamaha QT50 (Towny) and I think $900.00 cash. We went to hell and back on our bikes. We were 14 and in first gear you could only crawl but with the high redline it would go up anything. With me on it I could hit 58 mph at redline with no wind. But cruising at 45 was nothing for the bike. I still have lots of pics and the Yamaha Towny had a top speed of 26 mph so this bike was a screamer compared. Towny has 32k miles on it and RX50 had 30k when I was done. Oh the memories. Thank you for that.

you inspired me mr. ken now I'm building a 1974 honda cub 90 with my dad. we are doing a frame off restoration to it.hoping to build a museum like your i still have 3 bikes but hoping to make it big.I have much time cause I'm only 16 yrs old.

I bought one of these brand new. Rode it for a year. My salesman said I would be back for a bigger one and he was right. Used it to commute to work when I couldn't afford a car. It blew a engine seal after 8 months and was repaired by the dealer. Great gas mileage and had oil injection so you didn't need premix, just gas in the tank and check the oil tank every so often. It was between this and a Honda MB5 but Honda wanted a $100 more. I got a lot of laughs from people when riding it, but I didn't give a rip.... I just needed basic transportation. It was the start of my lousy off & on relationship with Yamaha USA starting in 1982 until I finally gave them the boot in 2007. Terrible company.

It’s the bike I took my motorcycle riding license on. That was back in 1987. Ours was an 84. Oil injected two stroke.

It was so nice not to mix oil and gas like my Garelli moped from Italy. (it was junk and rx50 rocked.)

I remember looking to purchase the 650 Special in 82, the 83’ models just hit the showroom, I was 15 years old. I ended up buying a new Kawasaki 550 LTD.

Among a few nice yamahas we had like 2 650 specials and an 850 special and my first one was a 400, all 1980 to 1983 bikes.

My brother had one of these back about 1990 when we were kids. It was the midnight special version. I wish we knew then how rare that bike was because we drove it till the ring froze on the piston and never fixed it.... sad to say that bike sat in the barn for 20 years and ultimately ended up in a scrap pile....😱😱😱

I had one, I had no idea what it was, or what it was worth, I sure wish I had kept it. But it was a TON of fun when I did have it, I used to blast down the sidewalk next to my house with my 3YO daughter in front me on the tank screaming to go faster.

From what I understand the RX 50 was raffled off from the dealers. They got 2000 of them. I read early on in the comments there was a production RX 50? Would that be the one with the chrome bars and exhaust? I am now questioning what I have I have two with chrome exhaust and chrome bars is this a production RX 50?

Hi Ken, beautiful wee bike guys, I love the Yamaha custom bikes, just look 👀 at the handle bars, gorgeous shape, everything is so beautifully custom on her,they really nailed it imho. Almost swapped the 850 for an 1100 but the 1100 was a rattling pile of junk! You could literally hear all the moving parts rattling loose every time you rev it....

No back seat or footrests but it didnt stop us from putting a thin girl on the back. The seat had a hard plastic end with a little door for keeping paper work or a tiny, tiny, sandwich.

Rx50? Woah i never even heard of a 50cc rx. My dad had a 100cc I told you about , which did 100mph with tuning n micron exhaust. The seat has a different shape than the 100cc, which is more flat and standard.

Loved mine because being 49cc made it a moped in Kansas at the time with no restriction on HP. 58mph flat out.

@@darylkik6204 thats really good for a 50cc. The 100cc came with a restrictive stock pipe that kept the bike to around 60mph or just over, stock. The Rx is a great bike, and i suspect it shared a similar bottom end to tge similar models like the RD. A British company named BDK used to make high performance parts for Rx, and they had an exhaust pipe which dyno added 8 extra bhp i believe. I know people here have had Rx 100 reach 120mph with higher tuning, which i believe cuz my dads would do 90mph and be only near redline. 😊 RIP dad - and sorry all the times i snuck your keys out to go for quick joyrides 😊

@@enochthewitness719 My family allowed for no motorcycles until your 18 or out of the house. The RX50 Special was a moped at the time. (Today they limit the HP allowed in Kansas to be a moped) Never heard of the raffle to win the bike like everyone mentions but paid cash and trade in for mine and my best friend bought the other one they had. We went everywhere on those bikes, trails, dirt , street, grass and never once did it let me down. (I am a neat freak and the looked brand new until I sold it.) It was my motorcycle that was not a motorcycle and the memories are still strong. I have owned many bikes over the years and the RX50 (We just called it the 50 Special) is the bike I wish I still had. I am jealous you got to ride an RX100 because I could only read about and drool over the bigger bikes.
