I can't believe I didn't come across this review earlier. To have the first Grand Seiko ever made sure is something to be able to say. As you said in the review these are so difficult to find in such good condition, what an honour and pleasure it must be to own one. I would say my favourite Grand Seiko would be the Grand Seiko SGBJ021 Hi-Beat 36000 GMT Caliber 9S86. That deep burgundy/red dial with the coloured movements through the crystal back casing. Beautiful watch. Awesome review Jory 👍

Of the vintage options, I like the 44GS. Of the new references, I own the SBGW253, reissue modelled on your watch. I love it. I am also fond of the SBGV011, SBGA025 amongst others.

What a glorious watch! Congrats T3 and thanks for sharing it. I can barely afford to pay my data bill so I can look at pictures of Grand Seikos, but if a bag of money fell off a Brinks truck, I'm really digging that recent Peacock dial model.

The Grand Seiko SBGR261 or Snowflake will be my next watch. I spent a lot of time in the Seiko Premium Boutique in Japan last year during vacation and was blown away at the quality of GS watches. Amazing dials and mirror-like case polishing. And to see the sweeping seconds hand of a spring drive movement....I'm sold on the brand!

I'm currently eyeing the SBGW253 re-issue... 3:28... NOOOOOOOO !!!! you never. ever , ever, ever put a strap watch on that way ! That's SO easy to drop the watch and it falls face down ! You put the watch on your wrist in the normal position then do the buckle up UNDER your wrist...the watch is then safely resting while your right thumb is pressing the tail end of the strap to your wrist and your right 3 middle fingers manipulating the buckle... I feel like creating a youtube channel with just 1 video on it. How to put on a strap based watch. Beside that, beautiful watch !

Now, that's a keeper! For the longest time, I had been aspiring to own one of the older Grand Seikos, but I had not been persistent to track one down! Then I gave up and started looking for a high-beat King Seiko that is in half-decent condition, but without much luck either. then, last November, one of my co-workers is interested to swap his 1967-vintage manual-wound Lord Marvel for my Borealis Scorpion Fish Diver. The deal was done the next day with no regret. My Lord Marvel is the gold-tone (SGP) version with the 5740 caliber and zero complication. It has a seahorse on the case back. Unfortunately, about 1/8" of the gold plating on bezel was chipped off but otherwise the watch was running great. The balance beats at 36,000 vph which is an insane rate. It keeps extremely good time at no more than +2.5s per day. What's interesting also is that it neither gained nor lost any time after I spent an hour on the treadmill! My SKX and Turtle divers would typically gained about 25 seconds after a 60-minute run. This 50-year old high-beat movement still runs extremely stable which is a testament of the superior engineering, design and execution of this watch. Seiko has definitely earned my respect for their tireless quest for continuous innovation and improvements to their timepieces. Thanks again for introducing this important Grand Seiko to us watch enthusiasts. May be someday I could manage to find the one I am looking for!

It always kills me how many people want to diss on GS because they can't believe that Seiko (or a brand owned by Seiko) can make a quality luxury watch. They think only Rolex, Omega or another Swiss company can make a "true luxury" watch. Probably these people own a luxury car made by a company owned by Volkswagon. That's a fantasitic watch and congrats on having it!

People forget Rolex wasn't always such a luxury company, and now just focus on brand name and dismiss Seiko, it's strange how they don't realise Rolex was only able to build up it's brand image by innovating and making something people wanted, which Seiko has always been trying to do, but for some reason people won't give Seiko the same chance Rolex got, even thought Seiko have arguably contributed more milestones in horological history.

As much as I love Seiko, knowing their history and owning a presage I've always wondered, why don't they have any smartwatches? They're the ones that toppled Swiss giants with their technological breakthroughs of quartz in the 60's, yet they haven't taken a step into smart watch territory. In fact, they were the ones who were heavily invested in LCD early on. Have they stagnated, or will they join the ranks of the new technological revolution? Btw my favourite vintage watch is the first J14070 and OG Omega Constellations(which I have). Grats on reaching a milestone and obtaining this beautiful watch!

Thing about Seiko is it always seems like they're moving forward, their Grand Seiko models do something better each time, and sure they do rereleases and callbacks, but they don't rely on it. Then you have Movado which have completely played it safe and focused on their Museum Watch design rather than innovate.
