PART 55 of this series, well at least my car now has an official name!
My biggest challenge yet! Can I FIX a 1988 Rolls Royce Silver Spirit with too many faults to list, there is more wrong with it than right. Will I end up crying into my Connolly leather seats or will this beast live on.
This is the cheapest Rolls Royce in the UK so I wasn't expecting much, hopefully bit by bit with sheer determination and zero skill I will attempt to fix each fault one by one.
This is PART 55 of this series. Every part will be filmed, and I hope to discover the craftmanship that has gone into this 34 year old moving piece of art.
If you would like to support these videos, please click here / mymatevince
If you have an interesting 'non returnable' item for a 'trying to fix' video then my PO box is as follows. Please only use if you are from the UK and using Royal Mail.
PO Box 2597
WATFORD

UK
Remember that this is just for entertainment and I am not an expert in these repairs. The processes in the video may not be the best way, the correct way or the safest way to fix these things. I do love fault finding and trying to fix broken things, so I hope that comes across in this 'Trying to FIX' series. Many thanks, Vince.

The paint code is just the start Vince, there will be several shades for that exact paint code and you will have to match with swatches to the existing paint on the car if you want a good match. This is what auto body techs have to do when they have to match existing paint and even then it is very hard to get an exact match so they end up spraying several panels to "lose" the difference over a larger area which fools the eye. Also like you say humans mix the paint and there is always an amount of error between batches, paint is weighed when mixing, they following their mixing scheme which tells them how much of each colour to add by weight to achieve the colour of the paint code. Add to this that the spray gun pressure, how much base coat is applied vs how much primer is showing through, ambient temp and application technique can all effect the colour. So unfortunately just having the paint code in not enough to ensure a match, although the paint you just purchased does look completely different. I avoid eBay for paint and use a local paint shop supplier with a mixing scheme to ensure I am getting the product I want. Looks like you are only putting a mist coat down when you are spraying, the panel needs to look wetter than it did so all the spray "knits" together on the surface of the panel. This will significantly reduce the orange peel but does increase the risk of runs but you can nib them out with wet and dry but for spraying outside against the elements you did a great job Vince. The nozzle of the can wants to be a stretched hand span away from the panel, so if you stretch all your fingers and you thumb out the distance between the tip of your thumb and the tip of your little finger is how far the nozzle should be from the panel as a rough rule of thumb. When wet sanding the orange peel out of the lacquer the trick is to stop sanding just before the orange peel disappears, then when you compound the panel it will remove further lacquer as it is an abrasive and will remove that last bit of orange peel at the same time leaving you with as much lacquer on the panel as possible. Yeah p4000 was not worth it, you could have stopped at p3000 and then compounded. Try to avoid starting and stopping the engine, this will kill your battery very quickly if you are not charging it with a charger. Starting the engine needs an enormous amount of power and for the alternator to recharge that battery the engine will need to run for at least 40 mins. So if you switch the engine off after 5 mins the alternator has not put the energy required to start the engine back into the battery. If you keep doing this the battery will never recover and you will be back to hard/no starting.

I work with printing ink and yeah there are lots of colors that are incredibly hard to get an exact match when using different batches. Grey is hard but green is worse. Green being made of blue and yellow instead of a real green pigment mean it can easily swing off shade. That and the human eye evolved to see shades of green better than any other colors.

@Mymatevince Well done using the rattle cans. You will always go through on an edge, the paint is thinner, stay away from edges with a machine, and also by hand. When you do the cutting by hand, try using a block wherever possible or you might 'finger fk' it as we used to say. Pity cellulose was removed from general sale as that paint is far more forgiving and easier to work with than the harder paints of today, plus the shine was all the way through a cellulose. But all in all you are doing a grand job, and your attention to the shuts is nice to see. You would have to go at it hard to go through a flat panel, but an edge will go through very easily.

Dear Mr. Vince. 👍👌👏 Oh WOW, simply fantastic! The spray can paint job is looking absolutely great and of course definitely way better than anything that was on the car when you bought it. The steady slow swing with how you applied the paint shows, that you have become an experienced spray painter. The result of all the effort you put in speaks for itself (or let's better say shines for itself). I'm very impressed. Also with the little plastic device to click on the spray can. Until now I thought that something like this is only a toy. 2) Bad luck with the rats. Hope you somehow got rid of them and nothing was damaged/chewed up. Rodent poop and especially rodent urin is very aggressive to any metal and paint. 3) Rolent Royce!? Rodents Royce!? 😁 ;-) As always: Thanks a lot for making teaching explaining recording editing uploading and sharing. Best regards luck and health in particular. Post Scriptum: I'm happy to see that you went with the decal stripes. Otherwise it would have cost way too much time.

Damn rats!!! I live in Montreal, Canada and had just returned from a three week family visit to Greece. I started the car and after about 5 minutes I started smelling burning toast. I thought I was having a stroke but when I popped the hood i found bits of food neatly laid out on the engine cover. I also thought I had an empty gas tank but it turned out that the rat had built its nest in the space between the trunk floor and the top of the gas tank and had chewed the wire for the gas level sensor. It cost $1200 to fix the damage and two years later I sometimes think that I can still smell that rat.

We live in Brisbane, Australia and both my parents and sister who live in a semi-rural part of the city have had rats take up residence in the engine bay of their cars. It’s much worse in the winter (for what it is here) as the rats like the residual warmth from the engine. Thousands of dollars in auto-electrical rewiring spent over many years. Dad now has rat baits permanently installed in the engine bay of his vehicles - problem solved! 🐀 The Rolls is looking amazing Vince… all that hard work, effort and perseverance has definitely paid off!

Vince I was about to say the Rolls was looking really great. In Western Australia, many Auto Shops mix up car paint according to the code on the car, and they have all these codes computerised to tell them what car it is and the colour. But more importantly, they put it into spray cans at the shop and seal and pressurise it. Good for most popular cars. I think you have done a beautiful restoration on this car, Vince. Don't listen to the nay sayers. The whole point of this restoration was to do it yourself, and I just love what you have done to it. It's a really lovely job, Vince. quick question did you rub down the base coat before clear coating it?? , when you was close and looking at the paint it looks like you didnt , if you do it makes it more smoother finish and mirror like . on a seperate note ,rats live any where and ever where it is dryish and out of the wind etc this includes cars , i would get rid of it quick as they love the taste of the plastic coating on wires .on another side note the white you was seeing while sanding it back is the clear coat residue .

paint mixing is done by mixing a bunch of different paints by weight (sometimes some very strange colours like red for a grey paint), they have a special machine with all the codes put in and it acts as a sort of layered scales. i would say colour difference is more from manufacturer than age, it *should* be the same
