Major Jeff Struecker is a former U.S. Army Ranger who took part in the 1993 Battle of Mogadishu, made famous by the film 'Black Hawk Down.' He also took part of the invasion of Panama in 1989, and served in Kuwait during Operation Desert Storm. Here, he shares the true story of Black Hawk Down, and recalls his career in military service. Major Struecker is currently an author and a pastor.
We had a long conversation with him about his service, which he described in great detail.

" I can't thank enough for what the Malaysian did that night and I can't thank them enough for their courage". Thank you very much Major Jeff Struecker for acknowledging, gratefulness and high respect towards the bravery and dedication of our pride, the Malaysian Army / Warriors rising to the occasion on that day and which was sadly not mentioned in the Black Hawk Down movie. Your statements means a lot to all our Malaysian Army/Warriors especially one fallen Corporal Mat Aznan Awang and his family. You are a true gentleman and officer Major Jeff Struecker. Salute. Please come visit us in Malaysia.

the Malaysian's contributions to the BHD were substantial, and Mr. Strueker mentions them in solid regard. There are two scenes in the movie in which a Malaysian solider displays his authority as APC driver, Ewan McGregor's character SGT Grimes barks at him to start driving immediately ("these vehicles are a bullet magnet, let's go!!"). The Malay soldier barks back, "We go when i'm ordered to, soldier!!" A few scenes later, during the final escape from the city, some impatient Rangers insist on jumping into the already-packed APC, and he tells them authoritatively, "No room, go on the roof!!" So i guess this was the director's way of implying the Malaysians had some sweat in the game. It would have been cool to see one or two brief scenes of Malaysian soldiers participating in the battle, like, say, firing their rifles. But we got what we got in BHD.

@@lurkingknight The movie was about the American soldiers obviously, I am sorry you feel the Asians were intentionally screwed but I am sure many who read the book, know the history and especially the men on the ground during that event will never forget the Malaysians. But bear in mind, the reason the Malaysians were called upon was purely due to political reasons from the very beginning after the Clinton administration took over in office. The politicians in Wasington DC (cowards) denied the many requests by American SOF command for heavy armored vehicles and AC-130 gunships, due to their reputation as being bad asses (Delta & Rangers) who don't need that kind of armored vehicles. When time came to ask for help from the UN forces in Mogadishu, Malaysia had the heaviest armored vehicles, so they became the natural choice. Majority democrats and democratic president denied the SOF on site the vehicles they requested. That simple, political bullshit.

The Malaysian military was grossly underrated for their role during the battle of Mogadishu and Black Hawk down. They received no credit for their actions in the movie Black Hawk down, these men are heroes and they deserve to be recognized for what they did. I doubt any of those brave Malaysians who answered our call when we needed them and came to the aid of the American military during of the battle of Mogadishu will read this but if they do, I would like to personally say thank you 🙏

America has some fine soldiers, sailors and airmen, but are led by clumsy and naive politicians who believe themselves to be the smartest guy in the room. The entire Somalia question was created by a bunch of fat, cigar smoking plutocrats seizing the assets of weaker nations; all of whom have had, and will continue to have their fingers burned. Many Somalis were very thankful and appreciative of the USA peace efforts in helping the suffering Somalis. Many Somalis opposed the warlord named Aidid who's militia were responsible for dragging USA troops in the streets of Mogadishu. The USA soldiers would even admit that Somalis were very generous and welcoming to them. You cant generalize all Somalis for what one warlord did. The vast majority of Somalis opposed warlord aidid. The USA covered up a civilian massacre that killed over 200 people. This made many Somalis who opposed aidid support him. Many angry mobs were mad about the USA bombing a building were clan elders discussed a peace initiative and ways for warlord aidid to pursue peace with the USA. When the USA bombed that building and killed over 200 people, many Somalis turned against the USA. I had the opportunity to train with the Rangers in Fort Lewis circa 1977. I was a 20 year old rifleman who though he knew a thing or two. After two weeks with the Rangers, I realized that I had much to learn and these "Quiet Professionals" were the finest soldiers I had ever met. Major Struecker is a perfect example of that professionalism.

Very interesting perspective of a former soldier with varied experience. Having served in both wars in Iraq, that was interesting to not only hear about the different places but also his comments of faith and how people are strengthened or diverge. I don't consider myself Christian but understand the need for belief in a power greater than self. I was in Desert Storm and afraid, mainly for self. I'll say I was pretty scared then. When I deployed back there for OIF, I had an inner peace. I only prayed for my family back home and my soldiers. And I can relate to two specific moments where it stuck out. And this was my belief in traditional Navajo beliefs. It helped me. I understood better life and things that are part of it. Thanks for sharing Major Struecker.
