After watching this I can't stop thinking about France. The girl Lilou does a fabulous job, unbelievable. Everyone does. Matt Damon perfectly plays an oil field worker from Oklahoma (I live in OK). It portrays complexity of relationships and the beauty captured of compassion by people from different places is what I think I loved that the most. I personally was disappointed at the turn of events but nonetheless I thought the film was well done, beautifully filmed, thought provoking and entertaining. I would watch it again.

I also liked it alot, very good study on dysfunctional families and making a fresh start in life but then fucking it up all over again by making bad decisions. And also not always realising when we are at our happiest and most contempt in life.

I just watched Stillwater. At no point did I think it was "about Amanda Knox," a case I am familiar with. I knew it was loosely based on her but not about her.

Agreed. Not even loosely so. The only thing in common is that she was an American living in Europe who's flatmate was murdered! All else is entirely different. Clickbait?

It is a superb film, very American in its portrayal of real life emotions. The actors,-- of course Matt Damon is a master--(( the sets, the dialogs are so penetrating, moving, ring true to the incredible story displayed in the movie, vaguely/accurately based on the Amanda Knox story). I cried a lot and ,as a French, delighted in the real setting in Marseille where I lived as a child. That city is an example of diversity, with its bad and good sides, and its complexity. The dialog describe very well the various feelings of solidarity, or the stereotypes that exist with the Arabs living there. It is a great model of collaboration between Americans and French in script and production. I just loved it! I forgot to mention the actress who plays Bill Baker's daughter: she is outstanding in her emotions and portrayal of the tragic fate imparted on her. As to the French Virginie, she is a typical French woman: so warm and real. As to her daughter, who would not love her: her relationship to Bill Baker is just amazing, so loving!

I wouldn't have know this movie was based on it until I was told its not like they took the complete story and its not a story about Amanda knox, and people take inspiration from literally anything and sometimes that includes tragic events Amanda knox story is completely different than this fictional one

I fully enjoyed this film. I saw it in a real movie theater, not on my couch [where I have been viewing many films over the past year due to the pandemic]. It was engaging and engulfing from the get go. Some of us prefer a slowly developing format with twists and turns. The acting performances were stellar. From reading other reviews, it appears people do not have patience for a story to unfold at its own pace, and prefer fast action and violence. It is loosely based on a true story, but does not present itself as art imitating life. It was refreshing to see a good drama on the big screen.

100% agreed. I loved the pacing of it. Great film.

Agree with everything you say here which is nicely expressed. As regards the Amanda Knox connection I think the only similarity is that she was an American living in Europe and who's flatmate was murdered! Everything else is different!

People these days dont have the patients to watch a slow paced movie. Probaly because of all the short dopamine social media content they consume daily. I enjoyed every second of this movie.

Who isn't a Matt Damon fan, oh! @JimmyKimmel is the only one... Every movie is amazing, action, drama, court room - Jason Bourne on steroids... Let's stop there, because as you watch this uncomfortable drama, Damon seems out of place, but that's because of his brilliant 'Sir Philip Anthony Hopkins CBE', style acting which he does not get credit for has kicked in without your noticing... I was uncomfortable for him, then I started to notice the French actors, then realised what a brilliant job the casting director did, even down to the French policemen who doesn't find the kidnapped boy in the basement. It's then that you realise what a brilliant job the little girl in the movie did, then you ask another question. Who was the star of the movie..? How many other sub-plots and story turns could have or indeed did happen during this film than ends too soon, he get's his daughter back, returns to the US., but has now clearly lost a life and new daughter that he never new existed a life perhaps he should have had... This is an unselfish ensemble cast. The 'Spoiler alert' on this film is just that, it get's spoilt by the sad topic that gets in the way of the relationship being built along the way. My question, is the, or does the subplot become more interesting than the actual story..? This movie, is a love story that for the viewer is emotionally spoilt by a father's rightful attempt to bring justice to his daughter... The hero never returns and that sucks, throw the key away and let Matt Damon's 'Square Peg in a round whole' character stay in Marseille City in France. Sometimes the 'Disney Romantic' ending is wrong, but this film it would have been better if they would have reunited... Better for the audience, better for me... I'm sure the construction workers in France miss Matt too... Qu'en est-il de la romance, pas juste du tout?

I think this unfortunate counter-fairy tale ending is in fact what makes the movie beautiful in some way and definitely memorable. the fact that we are still longing for this (im)possible reunion. your sensitivity is quite lovely too ;-)

It was enjoyable to be back in a movie theater again and for the movie "Stillwater" it helps not to be distracted and to follow the dialog closely. Matt Damon is excellent as usual, but so is the French actress who plays his sort of love interest as he travels from Stillwater Oklahoma to Marseille France. Matt plays a construction worker with the usual troubled past doing all he can to prove his daughter is not guilty of the murder for which she has been imprisoned. Not an easy task when you are from Stillwater and don't speak French. An engaging storyline and a different role for Matt Damon. I liked it.. imprisonedand the audience is not quite sure what to believe

Excellent opening usage of a score in the beginning. It wasn't just added, put in, but placed and paced where it became part of. It sounded fantastic through the speaker system, which meant effort was afforded to create an involving atmosphere in the theater. I settled in. There were emotive close-ups, arc camera usage to add to the seriousness of a situation, and good acting by all to keep the audience involved. There was only one point where I wanted the scene to concluded, and push ahead. This is not like the trailer where it somewhat suggests that Matt Damon is breaking anyone out of anywhere. I'm glad the director didn't go in that direction, for this movie is more involving. The director, Tom McCarthy, gives us clues via cues in the actor's dialogues, so you do know, but not completely. There are some very very good scenes in Stillwater. The parting of Maya and Bill, well it got me. In real life, those moments just rip you, and Tom captured the actor's abilities on film and it conveyed those moments of melancholic clarity, much like Jackson Browne did with his song "Late for the Sky ". Camille Cottin, as Virgine, performance certainly needed to be mentioned here. Very good movie about a Tale of Two Cultures.

I don't know why Amanda Knox is being the way she is I feel like they did a great job on this movie compared to all the other things that people have tried to persuade her as Matt Damon did a great job and so did the girl that played Amanda Knox and so on...

It all depends. If it was marketed as being based on her story then I am totally behind her protesting this. Not sure where the total lack of compassion comes from in the comments especially the person who suggests being wrongfully imprisoned is no big deal! Be put in prison wrongfully and let's see you not complain! Wierdo!

They portrayed her as a lesbian, and as actually guilty in the end. Bunch of political garbage throughout the movie with all the race crap and Trump question lol. This movie would’ve been much better without all of that.

The movie portrays 'Bill' (Matt Damon) as such a one dimensional character that at times he seems almost shell-shocked and on autopilot just to keep going. And maybe that is exactly the point. Moving along; casting the rail-thin Camille Cottin as 'Virginie,' his co-star and receiver of Bill's affections, is curious. I saw almost no amorous chemistry between them. Other than the fact, I suppose, she could be considered prototypically French? Little dark haired beauty Lilou Siauvaud, as Virginie's young daughter, Maya, almost runs away with the movie. What a natural! She steals every scene she is in and makes it look easy! Cinematically, the world is that childs oyster. Scenes of the natural beauty of Marseille contrasts sharply with the industrial, hardscrabble side. Like the movie itself, an agitated, imperfect balance. Stillwater doesn't gel as well as it could have, but is serious, meaningful cinema and shouldn't be discounted: A prayerful father immersed in guilt for his parental sins of omission, in a foreign land and against all odds, desperately following the slimmest of leads, risking incarceration himself, to free his daughter from four more years of prison. The seniors behind me, a busload I believe, seemed to really enjoy it. Three stars. ***

*A menina é culpada* ?
