What is the real cost of a Brompton? So it is exactly one year since we got our Brompton, which got us thinking. Whats the real cost of Brompton in terms of maintenance over 12 months? Obviously it's different for everyone, so how much does your Brompton cost you each year?

@QNux

Chains & sprockets every 3000km, Tires & break pad every 5000km. 4000km/yr. So about 150€/yr with other small changes (I do maintenance myself). Not cheap, but compared to what my car costed me every year, this is nothing !

@@QNux The purpose of a chain checker is to replace your stretched out chain before it destroys your cogs and chainring. If your sprockets require replacing with your chain every 3000 km, you need to lube your chain more and buy a chain checker. Cassette cogs should last for 2-5 chains.

I've had my Brompton for 7 or 8 years and have only had to replace the sprockets, both tyres (had been running marathon's and now running marathon plus...the marathons were excellent!) and handle grips until just recently. Otherwise regular checks and replacements of the chain (to make sure you don't wear your sprockets out) and a regular service are all you need. Brompton's are great bikes!

I don't travel that often (24km a week - 2x 6km journeys there and back since Covid) plus a few decent leisure journeys so still on the original brake pads and tyres (Marathons - not a single puncture so far) after 3 years. Think I've got another 3-6 months of both on my usage. Of course, I've pimped it up a bit but the only things I've actually needed to replace were the ezwheels and the front mudguard. My front bag is pretty much always heavily loaded so wheeling around the Brompton with the bag attached ended up buckling the rack wheels after a while . I've replaced them more sturdy ones and they've been fine since. I also cracked my front mudguard when folding it badly once. If I spent more than £50 on essentials over that 3 years I'd be surprised. All the other non-essentials on the other hand, I've probably spent over £500 (grips, saddle, firmer suspension, bags, more bags) and that doesn't include the Swytch kit I added to it. I've not needed to have it serviced other than the complimentary ones. I know my way around bikes generally anyway so I've done my own service tweaks so far.

The marathons are great on punctures. I have only had 2 x punctures on the Racers which over 5.5k km is pretty good I think so very happy with them. I have found the sam in terms of accessories. Spent a fair amount of "improvements" although not necessary for the bike though. I have found its very easy to work on like you said, so thats a really good way to save some money as well. Although I will be taking it in soon to have the hinge pin done at a bike shop, as I have seen from a few others that its a difficult one to do if it goes wrong! Thanks for the comment!😀👍

Nice! Thanks for the details :) I was expecting that the sprocket, chain and break pads would need replacement, but I did not understand the need to change the hinge clamps. Is that something common for Brompton ? Do they wear out and become loose or with play with time/use? I'm considering getting myself one for a while now and wanted to understand better the reason :) Thanks again!
@CycleEveryday

No problem 👍 The nice clamps need to be replaced rarely. Overtime they can wear out, but they are relatively cheap and easy to fit on. I brought mine second hand so not sure how long they had been on or how much they had been used previously, but happy with the amount of mileage I got out of them. I think most people would never need to replace them. Glad to hear you are thinking of getting a Brompton. Definatley a great investment 😀

Bromptons are subject to more wear & tear than other bikes, purely because of it's multi-modal nature. Taking the year before Covid on my old S6L, I spent £75 on a service, and that was it in terms of things I *needed* to do. However, I'm an inveterate tinkerer, and spent a lot on things it didn't need. I've now got an S6L-x Chpt3 and and M6L Electric, which will both remain stock and save me money as a result (that's man-maths right there)
@CycleEveryday
@CycleEveryday 2 жыл бұрын
That’s pretty good for a service as I guess that included any spares as well. Will be taking mine in for a check up soon on the bits I don’t want to do myself like the triangle which will need new pins soon I think. Easiest bike I have owned though to work on myself. That definitely keeps the cost down for me and prevents it waiting around at the bike shop as well 😀👍

I did a similar thing with my car - figuring out the actual cost per mile to drive it, aside from my fixed costs. In other words, my car just sitting outside parked, even if I only use my bike, costs me insurance, license fees, and general depreciation even if I never drive it. So what does it cost me to start it up and drive it, beyond my fixed cost? Here in the US, gas (petrol) costs me $0.20/mile, based on USD $5/gallon and 25mpg. I went through the maintenance schedule and looked up the service and parts prices and worked that out to $0.084/mile. That's oil changes, tires (tyres?), struts, shocks, brake service, everything needed up to 100K miles. So starting my car and driving it somewhere costs me about 28.4¢ per mile. A whole lot more than a bicycle!

Is there any specific kind of grease, or even more specific like particula brands of grease? Or will any kind out of the DIY store do? I just bought a Brompton and want to keep it in good shape. What oils and greases do you recommend?
@CycleEveryday
@CycleEveryday 2 жыл бұрын
The best thing to do is go to a Bike Shop as oil and grease will be specific to bikes. Bike chain oil is not very expensive and will last a long time as you don't need to use much. Grease is what you would use for bearings such as in the wheel and stem and is thicker than oil. Again, I would suggest you go to a bike shop for this as well to make sure you are using the right type for a bike.

It's probably that I live in an area with mild weather, but I've not really needed that much maintenance expenditure on *any* of my commuters... chain lube, saddle treatment every so often. How about the cleaning supplies that you bought for your brompton? Were those counted in?
@CycleEveryday
@CycleEveryday 2 жыл бұрын
In terms of cleaning it, I mainly clean it with a damp cloth after each ride and a small amount of car wash detergent on the chain so over a year would only be a few pennies at most for the whole year. I use old toothbrushes to scrub the chain as well so cant really count those. I am still using the same bottle of oil I brought last year which cost £2.99 so it wouldn't make a huge difference but a very good point you have highlighted. 👍 Personally, I like to keep it clean after each ride, as I think its the best way to make the parts last longer but I do know some Brompton owners that are taking theirs to get washed often or buying special cleaning materials so that would put the cost up significantly so that would be worth factoring in, but for myself, would at most be an extra £2.50 maximum 🧽🧼🚲

Not sure if I hear correctly, but you said you travel 11 km into the city? Is that 11 each way or In total? I’m asking because I’ve always wanted a brompton, but now I work from home so I don’t drive as much, but I do have to make a 22 mile round trip to pick up my son everyday from his grandmothers house. I was contemplating getting a brompton and just doing that trip daily with a kids trailer. I’m in Texas so It would be a mostly rural trip by agricultural fields. I drive a Jeep Wrangler so I only get about 17 miles to the gallon. I figure I’d do my body good and save money on gas. I just don’t know if I’m up to the task and how long it would take me lol

Shocking difference. Your bike repairs cost less than a car serice or one tire.

Will always cost money for things that wear out. Same for anything mechanical. That’s what the video was more focused on. How much does it cost to use rather than just buying one. 👍

So I'm incredibly lazy. I rarely clean it, I don't fix my own punctures, I only take it in for a service once every 12 to 24 months and I'd estimate I pay... 10p per mile. That's over 5 and a half years. (Not including the original cost of the bike) If I had calculated that a day ago, it would be closer to 5p a mile. :D

I'd say using the tube in London is about 50p per mile... and no faster for anything up to an hour's journey.
