Welcome to Harry Potter Theory. Today I’ve got a theory for you which exposes Dumbledore’s TRUE motivations for the school’s Defence Against the Dark Arts posting.
Severus Snape became the Defence Against the Dark Arts professor during Harry's sixth year at Hogwarts. And in theory, he was perfect for the position. He had a profound understanding of both sides of the magical spectrum, and knew more about the dark arts than most- making him the perfect candidate to teach students all about it.
So..Why didn’t he assume the role SOONER? If Snape was so perfect for it- why couldn’t he just have the job? Why did he have to wait until Harry was in his sixth year? Why did we have to first go through Quirrell, Lockhart, Lupin, Fake Moody and Umbridge before SNAPE got his chance? The answer may be more complicated than you think.

Take also into account, Dumbledore was always able to find a teacher for Defense Against the Dark Arts. How many Potion Masters of Snape's caliber?

Dumbledore used this cursed position to get rid of the people he didn't like. Quirrell? Dead. Lockhart? Incapacitated and humiliated. Fake Moody? Arrested and kissed by dementors. Lupin was an exception, as Albus desperately needed someone to guide Harry in this particular year.

dumbledore didn't even know that moody is fake, he actually wanted to hire the real moody because he thought after the events at the quidditch world cup it would be beneficial to have an ex auror around who can actually teach the students useful stuff

When Dumbledore did find out that it was Barty Crouch Jr. taking Polyjuice Potion, he wanted to keep Barty from the Dementors (for further interrogation). Cornelius Fudge (the Minister for Magic) sent the Dementor in anyway--despite Dumbledore's protests. Result: Barty was left a shell of himself. (reference: book #4)

Lorrie Kim, author of _Snape: The Definitive Analysis of Hogwarts's Mysterious Potions Master,_ argues that his earlier attempts to apply for the DADA job were insincere. I think there is some textual evidence to support that this was part of his cover because Hagrid tells the Trio in _Chamber of Secrets_ that Lockhart was the _only_ applicant for the job.

you missed another reason, the dd class was an easy class to get a teacher for. snape was also a great potion master, which according to the lore, was not as easy. so he was the perfect teacher for 2 classes, and was put in the more difficult one to fill.

Dumbledore was also using the position to attract professors qualified to teach Harry in his lessons on how to not be an asshole & build his character in the opposite direction of these "learned teachers" (learned in entitlement, taking unearned credit, using power for personal reasons, evil usually wears pink & acts like an abundance of sugar, collecting cool kids makes you cool too! IDK what he learned not to do from Lupin, except never allow a werewolf to bite you😢 & keep track of the moon ☪ cycle😮

While Snape is objectively great at potions and matters relating to the dark arts, I'd argue that he's abysmal as a teacher due to his lack of patience, willingness to used grudges against dead people as an excuse for mistreating students, his favouritism to the house he's in charge of and general obnoxiousness. He also seems terrible at explaining things (eg: one mistake when brewing a potion that Harry made in Order of the Phoenix could have been made due to one instruction which should have been written separately not being listed as a separate point rather than being stuck at the end an instruction which involved prolonged stirring, and he didn't appear to give any advice or instructions on how to cast non-verbal spells in Half-Blood Prince). I think part of the issue is that he seems to expect everyone to be as good as him, hence his claim in the first potion lesson of Philosopher's Stone that he normally teaches "dunderheads".

That’s easy. He knew the position was cursed. My guess is that he informed Lupin, Moody, and Snape of this fact. But decided to leave that particular job hazard information out with Quirrell, Lockhart, and especially Umbridge. I wonder if Voldemort or Snape let Amycus Carrow in on that little joke?

Sort of doubt that the position actually was cursed. If Voldemort could just curse positions with unremovable magic, then he couldve just gotten rid of Dumbledore by cursing the headmaster position

Dumbledore didn't suspect it was cursed. He KNEW it was cursed. Long before Harry ever came to school. He didn't give Snape the post because it was cursed. The other teachers didn't matter but he needed Snape. The only part the books aren't clear on is if, after you have been the DADA teacher the curse would allow you to still teach(just a different subject) at Hogwarts. Dumbledore would likely knowt that but we aren't told.

It allowed Snape to become the headmaster; so a former DADA teacher could stay at the school. Not that we know if Albus knew that.

As an added note, Snape only really got DADA, because there was likely no way to get Slughorn to come back to any post besides potions.

There is an interesting work around for the curse. Ironically it was discovered by Harry. In Order of the Phoenix he started the DA with his friends and taught defensive spells. If a teacher were to simply sit in and advise on an empty position you could have a “student” teach the class with no repercussions.

One idea I saw on TV Tropes involved changing the class' name to get around the curse (I know the DA didn't last for a year but it wasn't named "Defence Against the Dark Arts" so maybe just changing it to Magical Self Defence or Martial Magic could have worked).

I think that Voldemort's Curse on the Defense Against the Dark Arts position actually backfired. Instead of One Teacher over the course of the School Years, the Students got Many. That gave them Multiple Angles to look from towards Combatting the Dark Arts. It wasn't always from the teacher per year, but sometimes against them. I think Harry Potter and Company could have been ill prepared having only just one, albeit even a really Great Teacher, over the entire School Years.

Good point. They got the basics from Quirrell, and while he was a horrible teacher Lockhart's lessons taught them to be quick on their feet and how to manipulate a situation to their own advantage (specifically using Lockhart's ego against him, which Harry used against the Death Eaters more than once). Lupin taught them powerful defensive spells and advanced counter-curses, while from Crouch-as-Moody they learned more offensive magic. Umbridge, ironically, helped them learn the most, as the kind of subterfuge and deceit they had to use with her around just made them better combatants and saboteurs. While I don't think we saw as many examples of Snape's lessons, in one essay they had to describe how to battle dementors and another lesson focused on combating Inferi, both of which were creatures used specifically by Voldemort and so he was likely preparing them to face down these monsters. All of this combined was actually one hell of a course of study that a single teacher over many years would not have provided.

@@KamenRiderGumo I'd argue that having one or two good teachers over the course of the entire time students are at school would be preferable in the interests of consistency, assuming there's a varied and sensible compulsory curriculum in place (eg: students are expected to learn about x, y and x in year one, a, b and c in year 2, etc). I'm guessing there wasn't being as Lockhart resorted to just reading his books while recreating scenes from them (Umbridge's position means she was the one who decided the DADA curriculum with the intent of not teaching the students any defensive magic so it's pretty obvious that reading a textbook on non-magical ways of dealing with threats didn't resemble anything that students in prior non-Lockhart years would have done in that class).

I feel like Snape's persistence in applying for DADA role is another act to make Snape look like he still had some loyalties to the Death Eaters. It makes him look he is trying to get the position to teach Death Eater ideals to the students.

There was a problem with this that I noticed in the books with regards to Quirrel. Both in the books and in the movies the older students in Harry's first year heavily imply that Quirrel had at the very least, tought the subject the previous year. Fred, George and Percy all alude to it.

This can be explained. Quirrel was himself the prior year, and someone/something else the next year, having been possessed. That leads to the question though: Did Voldemort actually teach Defense Against the Dark Arts in Harry's First Year?

I like to think that snake repeatedly asking for the dada position is asking for un-alive himself or for a way out of there agreement and dumbledoor only let him take the position if he were to kill him

Dumbledore knew the DADA position was cursed, and he knew he needed Snape's services as a double agent. As qualified as he was to teach Defense Against the Dark Arts, Snape was also the most qualified person to teach Potions class. Potions was the safe way to keep Snape around. Going into Harry's sixth year, Dumbledore knew he was dying, so it was safe to give Snape the DADA job.

About every time Harry used Expelliarmus. There's lots of times the Harry has used spells that either Snape invented or in one way or another taught harry.

I'm sure Snape got up in front of the whole school going this spell will teach Harry and oh yeah I am going to enchant my classroom so Harry pulls out my old book then get pissed when he tries my own spell against me which I know he uses.

In all honesty, Snape should never have been considered for the role. Even in the last year. Wouldn't it look weird for someone who suppose to be working for people who use the dark arts to be training kids how to defend against them. He'd either have to not properly teach the kids to keep up his act of being loyal to Voldemort or put a target on his back for training people how to counter the very people he supposedly works for.

But putting him in the job in the last year is what makes it so brilliant. Dumbledore needed Severus to appear wholeheartedly loyal to Voldemort. Severus says to Bellatrix that the reason why he wasn't given the job was because it would "tempt him to his old ways". And to anyone that doesn't know the truth (literally everyone) that's exactly what happened. To an outsider it appears that Dumbledore made a mistake in trusting Severus with the role and that's proven at the end of the year culminating in Dumbledore's "murder" at Severus' hand. Dumbledore didn't die randomly and left Severus with no choice but to serve the Dark Lord. Severus "chose" Voldemort by killing Dumbledore.

I’ve always thought dumbledore didn’t give Snape the role as he knew it was cursed makes the most sense although Snape had to say that dumbledore thought it might bring a relapse, in order to protect his identity with narsissa and belatrix

Every time I see a video like this I give myself a little pat on the back. A few years ago, this theory came to me as well. When I went to check the official wiki to see if there was any support for this, I couldn't find any. So, I added it. I realize that it's highly unlikely that I'm the only one that came to this conclusion, but I like to think I made a small contribution to the fandom this way.

Voldemort would know the academic aproach and strategies snape would adopt which can hypothetically reveal his true allegience. Snape's comptetence can allow him to train more death eaters than ever in voldemort's chess map

I always thought the curse was fake. It was started indirectly and encouraged by Dumbledore in order to control the curriculum. He didn’t want Snape to have the job as he would have to fire him in order to maintain the lie.

I'm writing this comment while watching, and already have a theory about the subject that's actually quite simple. Snape is the best potion master hogwarts has to offer. You don't put your best asset on a cursed position. Dumbledore needed Slughorn in year six and with him teaching his old job, so Snape basically got layed off for a memory. Dumbledore knew he was going to die that year and with Snape likely doing the deed they actually already fulfilled the curse. He wouldn't be teaching Defense longer than that year anyway. It was simply the perfect opportunity to "safely" fulfill the role. Now I'm going back to the video, exited of what to come. Have a great day everyone!

Well yeah he would’ve had something weird happen to him after his year at the job. Plus it worked out cause in year six slug horn had to come back and he was a potions teacher, in order to obtain the crucial memory.

How do you even curse a job position for decades, and in that kind of ambiguous way? Is there a spell for that sort of thing? Does Voldemort need to actively keep it going? Would just changing the name of the subject, or any other aspect of it, removed the curse? Could they have started a similar new subject and kept the old one as a secret elective one that no one is informed of? So many questions!

I haven't watched the video yet, but I always took it to be a combination of things. For one, I like to think it's in part just Dumbledore sort of trolling Snape. Like yeah, he trusts him, but also I never get the sense that Dumbledore liked Snape very much. But I think there are two other main reasons. For one, he knew about the curse Voldemort put on the position and he viewed Snape as too valuable to risk for no reason. (And I think Snape also knew about the curse, and it's partially why he wanted the job.) And the other, and most important reason, is because of the other hires he made. All of the professors Dumbledore hired during Harry's time at Hogwarts were specifically hired to prepare Harry. Quirrell, Lockhart, Lupin, Moody, Umbridge, and Slughorn all taught very valuable lessons to Harry. Until Slughorn, all of them were DADA professors, so that position was never open. And once Dumbledore needed Slughorn, it was kind of perfect. Snape moved into the DADA position, and Slughorn took over Potions.

This is never addressed in the books. We like to imagine that Harry taught the course, but Rowling has said that didn’t happen.

It makes sense that the one that was protecting Harry wouldn't be put in a position that could mean his death as well as Harry's until Harry was ready and no longer needed the same protection. Look what happened to Voldemort's other allies who got into the position. Quirrel (whom he parasited on) dead, fake Moody (Crouch Jr) exposed, Umbridge forced from the castle grounds by centaur. Snape himself died on the position and that is when we see his true alliance and allegiance. If Snape had been in the position of dada earlier Harry may not have been taught how to protect his mind from the dark lord....we may not have seen where Snape really stood, or even how he never stopped loving Lilly. Dumbledore perhaps knew Snape would have his life taken for Harry's sake. Perhaps Dumbledore realized with Snape's history when he did take the position, it would appear as if his motives were evil and that he would appear to be teaching death eater philosophy

Most of all, Dumbledore needed Snapes help to protect Harry. The best way to keep Snape motivated to do this was to constantly remind him of Lilly. By keeping him teaching potions class, Snape had to walk in every day to a room where some of his best memories of Lilly took place. I'm sure every potion he taught had a memory of Lilly connected to it. This help keep Snapes pain and regret alive and work to Dumbledores advantage.

Dumbledore did not give Snape the post because Snape was exceptionally good at Potions, and the Ministry didn't need reminders of "Death Eater" + Dark Arts or they eould have been even more interfering. By putting him in a position where he was all but forgotten, Dumbledore limited the questions stemming from employing Snape, as Pitions are neither a light nor dark art.

Then why did professor quirrell have it longer than a year? They said Snape was after his job for years. Could it have been because he had voldemort attached to him? And at what point had he attached to professor quirrell? Had it been the whole time he had the position?

I do agree with this theory. However, Snape being Snape couldn’t have asked Voldemort to just I don’t know remove the curse? It’s just to me. It seems like Snape would find a way to convince Voldemort to remove the curse so that he could be defense against the dark arts teacher. Was Snape not thinking about this? Yeah because of my mind if I was Professor Snape and I was a double agent and I was one of Voldemort’s most loyal followers and Servant I would think I would have some kind of sphere of influence and that I would be able to persuade the dark Lord to remove the curse on the dada position at Hogwarts or ask him if there is a way around the curse. This is just my thought.

Tom Riddle treated Hogwarts like his home. Maybe the curse was on Dumbledore. If Dumbledore knew he was dying the curse would be broken on defense of the dark arts.

If snape had been given the rule sooner than dumbledore probably would have died sooner. If snape had been ousted or indisposed as a result of the curse that eventually whenever dumbledore figured out that w**** cruxes were the source of the dark Lord's power, The curse placed on the gaunt family ring would have killed him before he had time to give Harry any of the vital information necessary for him to succeed at defeating the dark Lord

You'd think Dumbledore would have mentioned any other teachers who have come and gone when Harry counted 4 of them. I mean, in the decades since Tom cursed the position, you'd think Hogwarts would have gone through dozens of teachers for that class. Or am I missing something?

When you said “dark side of magic” instead of Dark Magic, I immediately thought of the Sith and the Dark Side of the Force lol! As you’re the only one I’ve ever heard use the phrase dark side of magic. As the Sith can use magic as well, and it’s far darker and more twisted than the Dark Magic of the Harry Potter world. Especially in the Legends continuity.

There are two questions. I’d like to ask why the hell did Dumbledore allow Voldemort in Hogwarts to apply for the job? He should’ve told him no outside of the school and second of all since Dumbledore knew that class was cursed. Did he tell these people was cursed because otherwise he would be causing public endangerment.

Dumbledore knew the job was cursed. Snape was too valuable an ally to risk losing him before the time was right. In a perfect world I feel like Snape would’ve been Harry’s DADA teacher for all 7 years.

The excuess that it might relapse him was just that fluff to his fake back story of being evil so he could be a double agent bith he and dumbledor always knew he was a good just so relapse would not have been a reason But the excuess adds to the glam that dumbledor didnt trust him and that he was evil so perfect excuess only about half way thiugh this video but im thinking he was good at dark arts but he was great at potions i belove this may have been discussed in half blood prince

I dont think snapes motivstion to pretect harry was as you stated pentince for prior betrayal He only ever loved 1 woman harry's mother and harry is literally the only thing snape has represneting his one love by allen in the rules of snape video that snape is alone always has been also he only wears one color black infact i dont think he owns any other clothing says allen Black is significant as it is the color of morning and he has never stopped his greaving her loss this is why he is single and wears only black

Instead of becoming an auror, Harry should have become the Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher. He was good at teaching as shown by the DA all becoming adept at magic & it would have made sense that he breaks the curse and gets the very position Voldemort dreamed of. It would also keep him connected to the only "home" he ever knew. Instead he just becomes a cop, Rowling overlooked the obvious.

This may sound stupid, but why do they just change the name of the class, Call it a different name. But just say he's not exactly "hired"and that you'll get a gift of money at the end of the school year.
