I think the reason LA won in 85 is because of Kareem. At 38 years old and after a poor game 1 ( the Memorial day massacre) Kareem came back with a vengeance and in the next 5 games put up these per game numbers = 28.4 points and 10.2 rebounds and 6.0 assists and shot 61% from the field. Kareem was the best player on the floor and was indeed the FMVP in 1985

No here's why they lost The trading of Gerald Henderson Okay i get it you trade Henderson and get a high no. 1 pick great and Danny Ainge is ready to start but now you got no depth You are left with Carlos Clark a overated shooter and the worst ball handler at his position I ever saw , Quinn Buckner who fell in KC Jones dog house and for some inexplicable reason gained about 20 lbs during the season and Rick Carlisle who they drafted that year Rick is so slow he makes Larry Bird look like Usain Bolt They added a washed up Ray Williams later that year but KC wouldn't let him play his way into shape,by the time they reached the second round of the playoffs DJ and Danny had no legs Cedric Maxwell knee surgery this is major because it dug into the teams depth even more It put The best six man in basketball ball in the starting lineup and Cedric's career was pretty much done Now the big controversy about this was that after Cedric came back from his operation it was thought he didn't put much effort in rehabbing his knee thus the thought that he quit on the team Which brings us to the resident MVP Larry Bird Larry was on his way to having his greatest statistical year ever but couple of things happened on the way to the playoffs and facing the Lakers in the finals First he developed bone chips in his shooting elbow towards the end of the regular season which definitely effected his shooting in the playoffs he sprained his ankle early in the conference finals against Philadelphia but more importantly during that series i believe after game 3 he got into a bar fight and damaged his finger on the right hand and that ladies and gentlemen is all she wrote after that he really had trouble shooting. Now you couple the fact that KC after the all-star break stopped playing the bench (he did this in the 87 season too)by the time the finals came they were done they weren't going to beat that 85 Lakers team no matter what format Yeah that great game 1 the infamous Memorial Day Massacre but after that Lakers had them the Lakers were fresh hungry for revenge and too much depth

I love KG but saying that Kevin Garnett is the best all around player the Celtics have ever had, is literally nothing short of insane. Because if he's better than Bird, that means he's also better than Jordan, Magic and Russell. @@franagustin3094 #1. Duncan never had an opportunity to be that acclaimed guy because he came after Bird, Magic 🎩, Russell, MJ, and Kareem. Bird was talked about infrequently as the best of all time outside of Boston as he was a contemporary with Mj, Magic, and Kareem in someways. The dust on how good each would become had not been determined yet. For examples, Magic and Mj won all their MVPs after Bird won all of his awards while Duncan won his after the entirety of the aforementioned players. We could see their final heights and knew that Duncan did not surpass most of those guys' peaks in real time - except Bird. #2. First in '85 he also had an elbow injury and his shooting was very inconsistent throughout the playoffs so I don't think he choked , but he wouldn't make excuses for himself & neither will I. In '87 game 6 as much as it pains me to say I always thought he flat out quit ! He was no where to be found in that game until the very end where he scored some garbage points but lets face it they had ZERO chance that series with the injuries they had. To add I always felt he quit in game 6 of the '88 ECF where he basically did the same thing.

The Celtics had very little bench that year, particularly after Cedric Maxwell went down and Kevin McHale had to go into the starting lineup. McHale was the better player, but it also weakened the Celtics when they had to go to their bench. There were also the injury issues, particularly with Larry Bird and the bone chips in his elbow. He just wasn't the same consistent shooter he had been throughout the season. All year long, the Celtics relied on Bird to bail them out when they needed a big play, and when they were unable to get that type of performance consistently from him in the playoffs, they sputtered, gasped and ultimately died against the Lakers.

The real question to ask is this....if the Lakers had beaten Houston in 86, Boston and L.A. would have played vs each other 4 straight finals. Bird actually said the 86 Boston team was the best Boston team ever. So 86 Boston vs L.A. finals, who wins? If the majority of you say Boston wins, then they would have been 2-2 in the finals vs each otherin the 80's. As a Laker fan in the 80's, I can live with that. Simply put, Boston vs L.A. in the finals in the 80's were the best series ever. Ever!!!! I hated Boston then, but dammit I love all of the players now. That's called RESPECT for the enemy.

This is from an LA Lakers fan since 1965-66. The LA Lakers blew the 1984 NBA finals. But that series showed that Henderson and Maxwell starting and McHale and Ainge coming off the bench made the Celtics a force for the Lakers to reckon with. I always thought the Celtics made a mistake in starting McHale and trading Maxwell (who I believe was an underrated very tough player). To me, Maxwell was the key player who decided both series. Plus Ainge as a backup for Henderson made the Celtics bench very strong. But I must admit, the 1985 Lakers finally beating the Celtics was the highlight of my watching the NBA. I still relish that victory to this day.

Cedric Maxwell is not an objective human being to think Kevin Garnett is as good as Larry Bird means you got hit in your heart for Larry and you're not being objective . You should never look at race on determining who's a better player or person it's based on facts and if you're trying to be a good person a good Christian person or just a good person in general you're not going to make your decisions based on race if someone's better than the other person

They lost because the NBA change the format. Before, it 2-2-1-1-1, and then in 1985 it became 2-3-2. In 1985 as in 1984, the Celtics won game 4 in LA but in 1985, game 5 was in LA. If game 5 was played in Boston in 1985, then I'm sure Boston would have won the '85 series in the same way that the Celtics did in 1984. And in1987, the Lakers won because the Celtics were injured (Mchale's broken foot), Walton and Wedman were injured and the Celtics number 1 draft, Len Bias died before the season started. The Lakers were lucky in 85 and 87. I wish would let go of his insecurities toward Larry Bird. No way in hell was Kevin Garnett was on the level of Larry Bird.
