The Real Reason These '90s Sci-Fi Shows Were Canceled

Back in the '90s, you had to wait a week to catch a new episode of your favorite show, and if your favorite show was in the sci-fi genre, you might have been out of luck. Today, sci-fi and superhero shows are a dime-a-dozen, but some of them really struggled to find audiences in the '90s, even the ones that had Star Trek in the title.
Many of them are considered classics today, like Quantum Leap and SeaQuest DSV, but they were unfortunately canceled before their time. Let's take a look at the real reason why some '90s sci-fi shows were canceled.
#SciFi #TV #90s
Quantum Leap | 0:00
The Flash | 1:33
seaQuest DSV | 2:47
The Secret World of Alex Mack | 4:09
Babylon 5 | 5:30
Superboy | 6:40
VR Troopers | 8:01
Aliens in the Family | 9:23
Star Trek: The Next Generation | 10:45
Star Trek: Deep Space Nine | 12:01

None of those 90s Treks was canceled. They all ran their course. All intended to have 7 seasons. Enterprise and TOS was canceled.

Vincent Laughton yup. The main reason Enterprise was canceled is because the woman who got to be in charge of CW hated the show so when The WB and UPN combined, she killed the show. She tried to do that with Smallville and Supernatural each year she was there and was outvoted, then kicked out because she tried going over their heads and preempting both shows hours before they were to return from winter hiatus.

@@scifiguy26 nope actually her name was Dawn Ostroff. She canceled Everwood as well as the promised Aquaman show Mercy Reef which was promised a fall slot on CW but she said oh she didnt create it so she didnt care. She also canceled WWE Smackdown but MyNetworkTV and then Syfy and USA grabbed it. She said Everwood was boring and replaced it with 7th Heaven which had already had its series finale but no longer had creator Aaron Spelling to watch over it. She also said they could remake Dawson's Creek since no one watched or remembered it, mere seconds after praising it for being the show that put The WB on the map which isnt true. Harris Caldwelly yeah the fans of all the shows she canceled and tried to screw over nicknamed her Demon O because we despised her so much. She actually went on record saying she wouldn’t allow shows she didn’t greenlight herself so she said Smallville and Supernatural weren’t important and she wanted them to end but they wouldn’t let her cancel them. She said well I can take their budgets instead and give them to Vampire Diaries so she did that and they couldn’t tell her no because she said that was her right. She also said The CW should be her own personal Lifetime Network. If you want your own Lifetime Network, go work there.

DS9 wasn’t canceled. Starlog Magazine back in the day reported they always planned for it to go 7 seasons like TNG. With Voyager, there was early talks for an 8th season with them back in Federation space but they decided it was best to end it with them getting home and Janeway got an appearance in Star Trek Nemesis where it was revealed she was promoted to being an Admiral in Starfleet. The only Trek show that got the axe early besides TOS was Enterprise and part of that was due to the networks combining and the woman in charge of The CW despising shows like Enterprise. She also despised Smallville and Supernatural and tried repeatedly to cancel them but was told no by the board of directors.

Seen one mention of "Sliders" so far. Fox, according to those involved, meddled and forced a compromise on quality and John-Rhys Davies left. With his draw gone, tbe ratings went down and "Sliders" moved to Syfy. The show recovered some of its mission, took on (season producer)Jerry O'Connell's brother Charlie, but both left, leaving Cleavant Derricks the one original. "Sliders" went one more season(which, barring another look, I thought was good), ending on a cliffhanger, but indiffence to a mostly unknown cast ended it. There are rumblings of a reboot. The story of SF at Fox would get worse. Need I say the F word?

Man I remember almost all of these. There were so many great shows back then. You don't really see too much like them anymore. I think part of why the scifi shows have kind of died off is because production costs have gotten way too high because the standards for special effects are so high now. It's a shame because I used to love these shows. Although the VR Troopers thing from what I heard from another source wasn't because of toy sales, but because they ran out of footage from the japanese shows they got most of the footage from. Just like power rangers gets most of it's fighting footage from super sentai.

John Wesley Shipp played three different characters on the new Flash series: Barry’s dad Dr. Henry Allen, Jay Garrick (the Flash of Earth 3), and Barry Allen of Earth 90 (basically the same character as on the 90s show; they even used some archival footage). Fun fact: when Shipp was interviewed and was asked if they planned to have him be a speedster on the new show, he said he hoped not, as the Flash costume from the original show was incredibly itchy. Another fun fact: one villain on the original show was played by an actor who also had his own show, where he played a police detective with superhuman senses: The Sentinel

@@electronraygun6346 I'm thinking some prodigy in his mid to late 20s who went to college at like 12 and grad school at 16 majoring in Quantum Physics because his parent worked on the original project and he's been obsessed with bringing Sam back and figuring out a way to make the leaping better by being able to be brought back whenever you want. He saves Sam but in the process messes up something in the timeline, nothing too major but not insignificant either. Sam being the hero that he is volunteers to keep leaping and fix it but the prodigy decides to do it instead and jumps into the machine when no one is around. Sam could even be the new hologram guide. And to account for Scott Bakula's age and to set up the means for no one to be around when the new guy leaps they can have Sam's body start to rapidly age as it adjusts to being out of the Quantum time field that kept him from aging. He's laid up for a few days in a government facility medical ward while they study the process when new guy takes the plunge and he decides he's the only one that can help.

@@michaelspencer1315 That's a pretty good idea for the show :-) I think if nothing else it shows that there could be plenty of compelling ways to basically reboot Quantum Leap. If Sam became the new "Al" then you could have an interesting tension by having the new "Sam" be more "by the numbers" very logical with HoloSam having to find ways of helping his new counterpart take a leap of faith in some way like Sam often did. I think there's lots of ways it could work, it really amazes me that they haven't brought the show back already! :-0

You can't technically call VR Troopers a ripoff or clone of Power Rangers. They were both from the same creator. The original pilot even starred Jason David Frank aka Tommy Oliver as the leader guy but he was recasted and Frank went to Power Rangers.
@matthewrosenthal753
@matthewrosenthal753 3 жыл бұрын
Not exactly. Jason David Frank was already on Power Rangers. Originally Tommy was to die like his Sentai counterpart. Cybertron, the original title of VR Troopers, was filmed during the time when Tommy’s powers were lost. Bradley Hawkins was actually hired to be the White Ranger, but Tommy proved to be such a popular character that Adam Steel was renamed Ryan Steel Cybertron became VR Troopers and Jason David Frank continued playing Tommy Oliver and became the White Ranger. Bradley then played Ryan Steel and was the voice of the Gold Ranger on Power Rangers Zeo before they showed the triplets that played Tre of Triforia.

Note about Babylon 5: While it got all five seasons, the network intended the show to be cancelled at the end of season 4, forcing the show to pack their planned seasons 4 & 5 content into a single season. Then that season did so well the network renewed them for another year, but they'd used up their whole story arc. This is why season 5 feels so disjointed and unconnected to the rest of the series. The real finale is the end of season 4. Season 5 is more of a coda.

So I would love to see you do a video of the same subject but covering multiple decades. Maybe from the 1980 through 2020. What they did to Cruzade was a shame. It was a excelent show. I had the colector box of Babilon 5, and Cruzade its included. Damm, they had all. The clear and important mission of discover the cure for bioweapon that whould kill everyone in Earth in 5 years, a badass capitain, a cool ship full whit interesting characters, the big universe of B5 to explore, the Shadows worshipers acting as enemy, cool scripts and good CGI. Imagine something like a Star Treck: Enterprise, but whit a crew of hardened professionals, a awesome ship, no time travel non sense or problems or continuity between the spinof and the original series.

While B5 was indeed planned out for 5 seasons, there was a snag at the end of season 4. The network was dragging its heels on greenlighting season 4, so JMS was forced to improvise and end a few plot arcs by the finale of season 4 in case the show wasn’t resumed. Then it was finally greenlit, and this resulted in a lackluster season. Personally, I liked Crusade and thought it had potential. I especially loved the character of Galen. The reason Star Trek TNG gets a mention in this list is as successful as it was it could have run at least another season or two. The final episode did not end in a way that suggested their mission was over. The reason the show did not return for the 8th season is the direction and resources shifted to the big screen feature films. So from a certain point of view, Star Trek TNG can be considered a show that got cancelled.

Nightmare Cafe, Friday The 13th The Series, Freddy’s Nightmares. Those three series were cut short. Cafe got messed with a lot by NBC and never found success due to network interference. Friday The 13th and Freddy’s Nightmares actually did very well with ratings but syndicated networks saw how well they were doing and put them on in the middle of the day instead of late at night. That drew the attention on watchdog groups who said they were promoting evil. Pretty funny they said that about Friday The 13th The Series since the main characters were all about fighting and stopping evil. More proof those haters just saw the titles and jumped on them without even watching sadly.

Tommy was 20, Trini was 19 or 20, the Black Ranger(Zack I think) was 22 or 23. So how did Power Rangers cast teens instead of 20ish year olds like VR Troopers?
