The Real Reason These Popular '80s Cartoons Were Canceled

There were countless TV cartoons in the ‘80s, and Saturday mornings were filled with adaptations of popular toy lines, comic books, and movies, even if some of the properties weren’t exactly kid-friendly. It didn’t matter, because the cartoons kept the kids entertained all morning while the parents slept in. All things must come to an end, and some of these cartoon series actually met quite untimely ends, with one actually ending before it ever began. From the Garfield adaptation that hated Mondays and big budgets to that weird Mario cartoon, let’s take a look at the real reason some popular ‘80s cartoons were canceled.

"Thundar the Barbarian" was cool. That apocalyptic story though. "A runaway planet hurtling between the Earth and moon causing destruction!" Everytime we have a comet or a rock/ship like Moamoa cruising around our solar system, it gets me thinking. Dungeons and Dragons was awesome! That hidden storyline about 'Dungeon Master' and 'Venger' being father and son was unreal. The only competition between those two was "The Mighty Orbots". Can't wait for a part 2 from Looper.

I still have a few favorite episodes, including 'The Night of No Tomorrow'. Venger actually got a little bit clever for that episode! Venger tricked the gang into believing that he was Merlin the Wizard, he got Presto to abandon the rest of the party and he had Presto _all to himself!_ Can you imagine a Big Bad in a tabletop D&D game doing that to split up the party and catch the party's Wizard mano-a-mano? Game over, right? So what does Venger do? He settles for taking Presto's magic hat and leaves him in a wizard's library with a grimoire and a magic cauldron, instead of, say, throwing Presto out of the floating castle and letting him plummet to his death. Stupid, _stupid_ Venger! >_
@nispelsm
@nispelsm 3 жыл бұрын
@@BloodyBay There is a theory only vaguely hinted at, that despite his thirst for power, Venger was never fully evil. Also, that the reason he never tried to directly kill the kids was because he knew they had a part to play in preventing the destruction of the realm that he wanted to rule over.

A LOT of 80's shows have been given great reboots in recent years alone. MLP, Transformers, Voltron, Ninja Turtles (with the exception of Rise,) Ducktales, She-Ra...just to name a few. But I like to think that the one show that NEEDS to come back today is Thundarr the Barbarian. Think about it, both the Fantasy and Sci-Fi genres have been doing exceptionally well in today's time and Thundarr is a blend of both sides. So, it feels right to do something with the show either for regular television, Netflix or even HBO Max

Dungeons and Dragons was definitely a show that got me out of bed on Saturday mornings! I still remember the intro "...cavalier and acrobat..." I recall there were a lot of repeats; as a kid I didn't know what was going on with the future of the show, but really enjoyed it and wanted more. GI Joe was pretty cool on the most part, but the action with all the firing and no one getting hit and every plane that got shot down clearly showed someone ejecting with a parachute was a little cheesy. And who can forget the moral lesson clip at the end as normal kids encounter a GI Joe hero, like "Flynn!" and concluding with "Now you know." "And knowing is half the battle! GI JOE!!" Where is He-Man in all this? That one was pretty cool too. This was a Looper video I definitely appreciated!

Saturday mornings for me as a kid was getting up around 6 am, running downstairs to the basement and turning on the TV, and watching everything that came on from that time until about 12-1 pm. Gene Drakes I have not seen Grave of the Fireflies and may never watch. I have issues with depression and anxiety so I try to stick to the happy Ghiblis like Kiki, Totoro, Porco Rosso and Ponyo. I agree! Born in '69 and I enjoyed all the kid related shows. Everything from the 60's cartoons like the Herculoids, Space Ghost, to the first Spiderman Cartoon. The 70's brought us the Super Friends in all it's incarnations, but also bought us shows like Shazam, the Mighty Isis, to Sigmund and the Sea Monsters and Land of the Lost. ABC used to do it big too. Friday nights before a new season of cartoons, they used to have what can only be described as a launch party, where they showed previews of the cartoons that were airing their new season on Saturday morning. So much great content lost to the ages.

That's why I can't stand these videos. They're written by someone who doesn't go beyond wikipedia for research and possess no first hand knowledge of the subject matter, while being narrated by some dispassionate cretin with a generic voice, who often stumbles over the pronunciation of common English words. I always feel like I know more about the subject at hand from my direct, first-hand experience growing up watching these cartoons, than anyone who has anything to do with the production of these videos. They're just intended to rake in advertising revenue by catering to the sense of nostalgia individuals who grew up in the 80's and 90's feel towards the intellectual properties of their youth. D.I.C. indeed. Clearly this guy knows nothing about the kid asleep in bed, the toy dump truck on the night stand, or the window open to the night sky and DIC logo. FAIL.

Saturday Morning Cartoons were doomed when groups who pushed for curbs on advertising toys etc got the FCC to make change its rules and another was that Children's Programming was reinterpreted as well..Cartoons were quite expensive but without the ad revenue many were already phasing out programming in the late 1980s and justified the change by claiming the morning shows and other such junk met its criteria for Kids. For nearly two generations Saturday Morning Cartoons were a ritual of childhood in America and it ended because advocates lead the charge claiming they were protecting childhood but in reality hated it almost from the moment they first aired.
