as someone who also from alberta, but now living in vancouver, the 15 minute community protests blew my mind!! like i could not understand the rage for something that could improve the quality of your life if you don't have to spend hours in your car just to get groceries!

Being from Europe, I find it so North American to complain about the 15 mins city concept and to glorify cars 😂 Happy to see you have a different perspective!

I just love how you guys feel you have to clarify why anything. I am much older than you two, but I learned from my sister that I did not have to 'justify' why I did things. She finally said, "I don't need your justification, but are you happy for now?" As we learned from the closeted Bee Keeper, we change what we want or need as time goes by. Just enjoy it! Be happy!

I did live in downtown West Palm Beach in my 20s and I was able to walk everywhere. I could walk to my job, grocery store, restaurant, parks, and bars. Our puppy loved it too!

I relate so much to you two. I was born and raised in Edmonton Alberta. Recently discovered that I'm not straight (lol), and since I'm graduating University this year I am considering a move to Vancouver. As someone who appreciates having amenities within walking distance, along with public transit and stuff happening, there is a huge appeal to living in a place like Downtown Vancouver. But the market right now is unaffordable for young people. 30% of your pre-tax income should go into housing, but that's just laughable given the current market where a one bedroom is $2700 and starting wages being as low as $21 an hour. Calgary on paper seems like a great city as a "cheap alternative", but when you dig into it there is a lack of nice rental stock in places with urban amenities nearby (like downtown or the beltline). Not only that, but the Calgary housing market is also blowing up now and is reaching unaffordable levels. Also lets be real, Calgary is not really comparable to the bigger Canadian cities in terms of urban vibrancy. As someone who has my whole life ahead of me and wants to live in a nice city environment, it all feels daunting and depressing. Any words of encouragement would help :) (also love your channel, keep up the great content)

more than just the accessibility aspect of 15 min cities, biggest factor to consider is its environmental contributions in mitigating global warming. less cars mean less carbon emissions.

Love this topic. We're middle aged, but my husband and I have both been obsessed with urban development since we were teenagers, and he even did an Urban studies major and a city planning major in college. We've been fantasizing about more walkable, dense American downtowns for decades and are finally seeing how places like our current home of San Diego have created vibrant urban districts with tons of infrastructure, improved public transit, and dedicated bike lanes that connect them all. And we have the perfect climate for walking and biking. It's changed a lot. Ppl *want* to live there, and nobody is being forced to, I don't even get that word paranoia *All that being said,* not everyone enjoys city life, we grew tired of it over the years (here and near SF/Berkeley) and wanted more space, more nature, more quiet. So we moved twenty minutes away by car. And we love it. We work from home, though, and we don't need to endure a commute. We drive into the city when traffic is light to enjoy restaurants, cafes, etc. What I don't support is California now pushing all suburban neighborhoods to densify everywhere, bc that brings more traffic into all parts of the region. I would much rather see very dense development concentrated near transit. And that's still what's mostly happening. As for walkability, we don't have sh*t near us, but we can walk to extensive hiking trails, which is a different priority. Oh, and Ryan saying, "hip" reminds me of when my mother-in-law criticizes ppl who "aren't very with-it.". I love when she uses terms from the 60s to gauge what's current in her mind. Cheers guys

I've been living in Vancouver more than half of my life and I don't want to move out of the city coz I love it here. I have a decent paying job but I am feeling the rising costs. Still cant afford to get our own place. 1M price for studio or one bedroom is so unjustifiable. My parents got their 2 Bedroom 2 bathroom unit for $250,000 in Mt. Pleasant back in the days.

Another entertaining vlog.. The concept of having most if not all the things you need within a 15 min walk is a great idea and that is how neighborhoods are developed. The people who are against this idea can stay where they want and drive.

Oh man Toronto needs to start tolling people coming into the city! People cut through smaller neighborhoods all the time and it just backs traffic up even more! I don't think most people realize that driving is a huge privilege and soo many abuse it. I love the idea of a 15 min city, It's sweet to be around everything that you need. I live in an area downtown Toronto and it's like that, everything is pretty much within walking distance.

Beekeeper from Calgary here! We love our little place in the SW (though I don't know how deeply Joe feels the ick, being from Edmonton😋) Got a couple hives in our backyard and our family owns a piece of land about 20 minutes away that houses the rest of our operation! Calgary is definitely not a 15 minute community kinda city though. I work in development and we're seeing lots of growth (University District is one to watch for!) But you're right that Albertans are pretty attached to their vehicles. That's something I don't see changing until recreation is easier without one, even if the city or your neighborhood is walkable, you still need to drive to get out to the mountains 🤷

Good timing...I just watched a video about the (entire) seawall area and experience....BORING was the verdict!

The 15-minute city conspiracy stuff is so wild, particularly because, as an American who lives in the UK now and has been to Oxford on multiple occasions, you already wouldn't want to drive through a lot of the more central/touristy areas! It's crowded, there are tons of pedestrians, it's very stop and go, you'd almost always be better off walking or taking a bus. I live in a cathedral town not far from London, and it's similar here- I might drive to the grocery store or something, if I'm going to buy a bunch of stuff to bring home, but I would never drive to, say, the high street where they have the market every week, because why? It's annoying, you have to pay for parking, and I can walk there in ten minutes. That being said, the 15-minute city thing does rely heavily on the availability of public transport, and the UK government has been making tons of cuts to public transport, companies have been raising fares and cutting routes, and so on. From that standpoint, I can see people being concerned that they could have this whole 15-minute city thing and suddenly find themselves stranded with no public transport because the bus company eliminated their route. But most of the people freaking out about this at least nominally support the same politicians who are contributing to the elimination of public services, so....

people who are conspiracy theorists and paranoid are not just people with nothing bad going on in their lives, a lot of these people are unwell mentally and have a lot of psychological issues!

We have 10acres in New Brunswick and we grow a bit of wheat, our veggies, and do meat chickens. Our neighbour is a farmer and has hives. We live 30 minutes to the capital city, but try not to have to buy groceries too much. It is achievable guys!

I have exactly that where I live, everything is perfectly walkable precisely because I didn't want to need to own a car. It's a bit more expensive but owning a car and living further out would make it the same amount of money. And I've immigrated to Canada from a place with roundabouts and neighbourhoods that do have things easily accessible and within walking distance amd wanting to live somewhere similarly walkable just feels right.

The West End is aging, and I don't mean just the buildings, it's the people. A lot of pensioners cant move because there are no affordable options for them, so they've stayed put in their battered 1960's mid-rise concrete slab. Businesses in the area tend to be affordable takeaway restaurants, greasy spoons and dollar stores because they're the most affordable for people on a fixed budget. "Upscale" restaurants never do well and usually close in a couple of years because they don't get enough business outside tourist season (RIP La Brasserie, Lips Resto, Centro, Delilah's...). There is a very limited selection of places to shop at and eat. Asides from the seawall/Stanley park, the West End has very little going for it.

If you work in Vancouver, living anywhere in Vancouver or Burnaby would be close enough. Most people do have cars. Transit is never reliable unless you only use the SkyTrain.

Calgary is too sprawled out but it has the potential to be much better within the next two decades with proper city planning and infrastructure. Everyone knows the rise in CoL has been astronomical the past decade: Vancouver, Toronto, Montreal and other big cities around the world. The Canadian economy is propped up on real estate and will become more expensive because of mass immigration to big cities, and because of the large amount of individuals that have their wealth tied to several investment properties. There's too much skin in the game now. Canadian real estate has risen 200-400% (with newer developments being less quality), whereas wages and salaries have barely doubled in the same amount of time, essentially destroying the middle class. It's not just a supply and demand issue. Greedy politicians and developers who control the terms and supply; INDIVIDUAL landlords with MORE than two properties, as well as institutions buying up homes; foreign investors; and real estate agents/realtors who perpetuate shady practices like blind bidding, all contribute to the current housing crisis. They say home prices are dipping as much as 12% this year but that just means your 750k condo will still cost you 660k. Millennials and Gen Z will have to earn at least twice as much as their parents to even afford a small home of their own.

OMG one more comment... That developer with the rent to buy program sounds super shady. Those prices are worse than California. We have a Vancouver developer who builds a ton in San Diego (Bosa Development) who has had shady business practices in the past. One of them is that the square footages weren't accurate. We once lived in an "1100 square foot" condo that was actually only 960 SF. So who knows if "390" square feet isn't actually smaller ..

I have noticed in my environment (I live in Centralamerica, yes, a poor country) that many people that are obsessed into paranoid or delusional ideas, quite use this methods as a copying mechanism since they are unable to face the realities in which they could be involved in, e.g., low economical incomes, discrimination, abuse.
