There is no denying that Luke Skywalker's face now in Episode 6 was the best case of deepfake we have ever seen and there is a reason why he's appearance is now much better then in The Mandalorian.

The deep fake approach excels when the face doesn't have to convey any extreme expressions. For instance, Luke is always very placid and calm, meaning his facial muscles don't have to move much. You'll notice that they cut away a lot when he speaks because animating a deep fake mouth to perfectly match dialog is still challenging. In order to make entire feature films using this technique, it would need to evolve to the point where the full range of human emotion can be accurately and authentically captured with 2D image manipulation. We're not there yet.

Also when he is running around with grogu on his back, they either zoom out enough that you can't see his face very well, or they zoom in on grogu with Luke's face just out of frame. When he is jumping from rock to rock the face doesn't quite look right, but its only for a few frames. Also I think they cgi'd his hair in one of the close ups.

They didnt use "De-Aging" to fix his voice, his voice is entirely computer AI generated using a software company called ReSpeecher. They can create any voice using old datasets and have it speak any line they want without the original voice even present. Its fascinating that we have achieved this technology. Heres a qoute in regards to this from an old article from the Mandalorian episode "Hamill didn't record lines for The Mandalorian, according to Jon Favreau. In Disney Gallery: Star Wars: The Mandalorian, he revealed, "Something people didn't realize is that his voice isn't real. His voice, the young Luke Skywalker voice, is completely synthesized using an application called Respeecher"

I loved watching the reactions. I was waiting impatiently to see how the general public would react to this and it did not disappoint :) With that being said, I was part of the team that recreated Luke for this episode and seeing @Shamook being credited for something he wasn't part of at all, hurts a team of very talented people who ACTUALLY made this work for the fans. Shamook should come clear about this, as his name is being cited EVERYWHERE when it comes to this episode, which is quite unfair. I am not at ILM anymore, so I don't need to be too political about it. I am speaking as an artist who sees someone else being credited everywhere, instead of the people who deserve the credit (especially Peter Demarest). Hopefully a making of featurette will come out soon clarifying who and how this was done. To be clear, it's nobody's fault to think what they think, because it was something someone started without ever verifying the information at all, and everyone else started repeating it over and over again. I am pretty sure great things will come out of Shamook's team eventually, because he is indeed a talented guy, but not this time, not on this episode...

This proofs once more how biased viewers nowadays are. Whenever it's done by a big studio, it's considered complete garbage and you can totally see how fake it is while if it's done by some presumed independent artist it's like god himself created it. People like to sympathize with whoever makes up for a good story and love to hate evil corps. It doesn't matter if it's true at all. Same goes for the cgi in the new lotr trailer which for some people seems to be among the worst they've ever seen. Tbh I had no problem whatsoever with how Luke looked in The Mandalorian and if it wasn't for the toxic fans I would never have wasted another thought on it. Tarkin and Leia totally worked for me, too. Amazing jobs, thank you!

Only OG Star Wars fans will remember how Luke Skywalker already rebuilt the Jedi! No, not so idiotically featured in the Disney trilogy. No, I'm talkin' vanilla OG! Our favorite Jedi had twelve students to start with. Unfortunately, no, the whole ''multi-verse'' idea DOES NOT work well with Star Wars! George Lucas wanted to make a story for the public. And he did just that! The books and video games that followed flowed pretty well as added fillers to the Star Wars universe. The character of Luke was made to near-perfection, only to be brought to a Titanic low in the Disney trilogy. So, yeah, as much as I appreciate Favreau and Filoni's effort to bring back Luke Skywalker in a more meaningful way in Mandalorian, I am afraid that Luke Skywalker and Star Wars itself are damaged goods.

You have to keep in mind the intense secrecy involved in the Luke appearance in Mando 2X8. The Lucas special effects team was the bare minimum necessary to get the job done. It wasn’t ‘give the best Luke possible.’ On the other hand, after the reveal, he HAD TO BE BELIEVABLE! All that jenkiness had to be polished and his look instantly believable. And in BOBF E6 it was all that. I loved how improved it was but am worried that the recast of Sebastian Stan might now be in jeopardy.

Honestly, I'd rather CGI Luke than Sebastian Stan. Don't get me wrong, I love Seb, but despite the fact he might look similar to Mark in a few pics, overall they're very different looking. Plus, Seb has several inches and a solid 30 pounds of muscle on young Mark. This is important because a major part of what makes Luke Skywalker Luke Skywalker is the fact he does not look like a traditional hero. He does not look like the guy who could win in a fight. He looks like an underdog. Sebastian Stan doesn't have that underdog look. He looks like a traditional beefcake hero.

@@rnichol22 I mean, in fairness, Luke's hair is awful in ROTJ too. The 70's were a rough time for men's hairstyles lol. I also disagree about the first one having a better likeness. His face was too round and his eyes too small proportionately. It was recognizably Luke, but off. The second version was more accurate in terms of his facial proportions- narrower face and larger eyes. That said, take any screen shot of Mark Hamill from ROTJ and compare it to any other screenshot of Mark Hamill in ROTJ and he looks completely different. When he first removes his hood in Jabba's palace he looks like a rugged 40 year old. When he's out of the shadows and into the sunshine, he's back to being baby faced. Even still my gripes with EPs 5 and 6 are that they don't feel like they're apart of the book of Boba Fett they could have easily been apart of Mando season 3 or Ahsoka, it felt very disjointed and choppy scenes kept changing left and right and had heavy reliance on Cameos. It was Very well done it wasn't too fan servicey a middle ground boarding almost but very appreciated. The jumps Grogu did where Hilarious in a good way, Ahsoka was a welcome addition I hope we see more interaction with her and Luke in Ahsoka. Order 66 scene was epic it revived those feels again, the 501st looked extremely good and the insult to injury to the dead Jedi really spoke words. But I hope we do get back on track to what this series supposed to be at it's core a Boba fett story, and soon to be The war of the bounty hunters my god was I on the edge of my seat when Cad Bane showed up I really hope we see a stand off between him and Boba or Fennec Shaand.

Maybe Vanth was offered a place in the Syndicate by Bane that's why he's disappointed...

Not so much improved technology, but a different technology. I agree Cad's shade of blue skin could be tied to the aging process. In real life this happens to humans. That is skin tone fades. It could also be his skin reacts to sunlight, like how light skin humans tan or get paler depending on how long they stay in the sun.

It's almost a magical experience to see actors as their younger selves in their roles again. Because these are the characters we love. It's not just a character, it's the combination of story, character and the actor that brings this character to life. It's amazing that Lucas Films and Disney took the leap of faith and just did this cause it means that also other studios will try it in the future and that gives us the opportunity to see our favorite heroes back in action. But it also has a downside to it. Because this technology can not only bring beloved actors in their roles back, it can also cause an endless repetition of franchises without anyone ready to take the challenge of filming new stories and fresh characters again. We will see what this technology will bring. I am excited.

The possibilities are almost unlimited with where the technology is now.

My understanding from watching the behind the scenes documentary of the Mandalorian S2 is that young Luke's voice is actually completely synthesized. They ran all of Luke's dialogue plus a lot of cut footage plus interviews and behind-the-scenes footage through an algorithmic tool, then used that to synthesize young Luke's voice entirely from scratch. Mark Hamill's performance was basically just there for reference (and I'm sure for optics as well).

As a CG artist since 1996, I can say that the first few minutes, where he was sitting across from Grogu, my mind was in a split. I couldn't tell if it was a real person, that they found, to look 99 percent like mark, or if it was CG. Later, it was obvious, but still very good. All the way, they where above the uncanny valley, and you didn't get the resurrected, reanimated corpse feel. The eyes where also in very good context with its surroundings. You are right, it was not perfect, but it was an unprecedented achievement so far. No comment on the the voice, I was too far obsessed with the visuals. Also, I think it differs from person to person, if they notice the voice effect. To me the voice was ok, but maybe sounded a little LoFi, or out of place with the environment(reverb and space) But i didn't really notice the robotic effect, as some people describe it, but our brains perceive things very differently, and although I have a lot of experience with sound engineering, my brain might obscure this anomaly.
