What is the real motivation or reason for why you work out? Do you even know. If you have not identified your workout motivation then it may be the very reason why you haven’t been able to stick to your workouts up until now. In this video, we go behind the scenes at ATHLEAN-X to uncover the reasons why we either stick to our workout routines or find every excuse not to do them.
One time intern Jesse shows us exactly why it isn’t always easy to find the motivation to work out. Even though he works with me side by side every day, he still has not been able to get into a steady workout plan or nutrition regimen. The reason for this is that he simply is not ready yet. That said, when questioned as to why he knows he should work out and why he would train if he could get himself going, the real honest answers start to appear.
You see, far too many of us go to the gym or workout for reasons too shallow to identify our real motivation. I’m not saying that wanting to be ripped or bigger is a shallow goal. What I mean is that it doesn’t penetrate deep enough beneath the surface to find the thing that is driving our desire to be ripped or bigger. Was it because you are tired of being picked on because of your size? Is it because you want to attract a partner and feel that your current condition is making you less desirable?
Uncovering the real motivator for working out is the first step in finally making this a lifestyle instead of a chore. My first motivation for working out actually had nothing to do with improving my body at all. It was to spend more time with my brother and share something in common with him. He was the first person that introduced me to training. While we were four years apart in age, I looked to him for motivation and working out became something we had that we could either do together or at least talk about together.
This turned into a desire to become more physically attractive to the opposite sex. I was a teenager and spent my days thinking about girls! Quickly after that I knew that working out was going to deliver much more than a girlfriend however. I saw how training could be my gateway to becoming a more successful athlete. At this point it became an addiction that I have yet to shake (and never want to).
Now my motivators for working out have changed (as will yours over the years). As a father to two twin boys I want to stay strong, healthy and a representation of fitness for many years to come to set an example for them. I want to be able to participate in their lives without restrictions brought on by letting myself go physically.
Your motivation to train could be something similar or it could be something entirely different. The key is to figure out what makes you work out and then wake up each day without forgetting what that is. Let that drive you to train when you feel like training the least. Let it push you when the easiest thing to do would be to quit.
If you want me to guide you through every workout and meal for the next 90 days, be sure to head to athleanx.com and get the ATHLEAN-X Training System. See what it is like to wake up each day, for maybe the first time in your life, and look forward to working out and eating right. It will happen, you just need the right inspiration to get you there.

I just workout to recover from school everyday. Sitting in a plastic chair doing stuff you hate with people you hate every fucking day for years on end will really fuck you up mentally. Going to the gym and working out, or even just going out for a run or something really helps me feel less shit at the end of the day after school, when I can finally do things I actually enjoy. But most of the time I just end up doing homework or worrying about some stupid test I have to take the next day. Fuck school, and thank you whoever for reading this.

@@TopStrikerMaverick Sorry to hear that. That's very tough when you are young. Edit: Seems your parents aren't really on your side. It's probably a failing on their part rather than anything that you do to deserve it. Sometimes parents wound their children to keep them weak and easy to control. Sometimes they resent the expense and hard work of caring for their children. Sometimes their lives didn't turn out the way they wanted and they need a punchbag to take things out on. Try to live a good life, it makes it easier to shrug off unfair treatment.

I became fitter in my 40's than I ever was in my 20's, and it started with the birth of my daughter. I didn't want to become an old man before she graduates high school, and I can honestly say that having muscle is the closest thing to the fountain of youth you're ever going to get. The feeling you get when you know you look good and fit can't be matched, and it helps you in other areas your life as well. Being the best version of yourself has to start with your health and appearance.

I think the REAL reason changes over time. At first it was vanity, size and strength. Now at 40, its more therapeutic because I've been working out so long. I think older lifters usually lift it becomes more about a hobby or something to do. I also work out not to just look good, but I'm terrified of looking bad.

I WANT JESSE TO READ MY STORY. I hope it inspires you TO DO MORE! I used to have a very similar health problem as Jesse. I would regularly have concussions (syncopes) when I got up too quickly or when I made explosive movements, and so I had to lie down and lift my legs as to get the blood flowing again. Personally, I suffered from cardiac arrhythmia and was on beta-blocker for most of my life. At 8 years old, I already had my first heart attack! My doctors, afraid of repercussions, asked me to do the least physical exercise, and heartily suggested a pacemaker. This was the WORST ADVICE POSSIBLE. For 4 years, I did close to zero sport or physical effort. My condition, although it did not deteriorate, nothing changed. Everything stayed the same. I was still taking medication, I was still having sporadic syncopes, and I still hesitated on whether I should get that pacemaker implanted. SO I TOOK A RISK. I started running. I started exercising. I started doing bodyweight training. Slowly but surely... With time, I discovered something. Maybe it was just me ageing, but I noticed I could run faster than I did before! I could run for longer distances. After a while, I could jump out of bed in the morning and not even faint or feel dizzy. I could take hot showers. Hell, I could even go on rollercoasters and not feel like I was about to die by the minute! Guess what? one year later, I TOOK A BIGGER RISK. I stopped taking my daily medication altogether (yes, absolutely reckless, and definitely not something I am qualified to recommend). Well... I kept running. I kept exercising. And I kept getting stronger and faster. Fast forward today, I can run a quarter marathon, three days a week, and at personal record times. Two months ago, I started going to the gym. I am now lifting weights I never thought I could lift. All my life, I also thought I could not gain a pennyworth of weight, and through careful nutrition, I gained 4 kilos (I swear it's all muscle). Jesse, don't let anyone tell you what you cannot do. Man is truly capable of anything! Always push yourself to the very limit, HOWEVER LOW YOUR LIMIT IS. And one day, you'll also notice your limit just got a tiny bit higher. Thank you for reading my story!

I believe the key word that was missing from this video was "FEELING." life is all about feeling. So many of the things described in this video have an underlying emotion of feeling whether it's getting the girls or getting picked on via bullying. Jeff brought up a good point. Focus on what you "can" do instead of what you "can't" do. I went through a decade of surgery on my hips (former basketball player) and for so long I couldn't do the gym anymore. I felt like I was deteriorating. I used to run a mile in under 5 minutes and after the initial injury I could barely make it to the gym. I started to focus on what I could do. So I started swimming for cardio instead of treadmill or elliptical and did body work a lot (including the total gym because your body moves with it making it easier on your pelvis) and over time I started to feel better. This led me to an entire different nutritional plan. I continued to gain motivation. I recently just graduated college (it took me 9 years). I continue to watch Jeff's videos along with Sylvester Stallone interviews. I'm 30 pounds lighter and can see my abs again. Perhaps I can make a video somehow for Jeff for future inspiration for others. I'm not great with computers however. Anywho, I'm on my way to the gym now 🏊

The reason I started is because I wanted to get back at my ex. Then I changed my mind, because it wasn't worth it. And then I continued training because I said to myself that I already paid for a full year of gym time in advance, so I'd better put it to good use. That didn't work out, either. Then, it hit me: I don't want to be skinny-fat anymore. That has kept me focused the last few weeks. I am nowhere near as how I want to look, so I have to push harder. I am a hard gainer, and I need to change my nutrition habits, but I've already skipped the sweets and bread. It's a start. Every day is a start. Thanks, Jeff. And good luck, Jesse.

Ground breaking! I love it! I have some injuries over the past 2-3 years that have all sort of been linked. Lower back, to ankle, to foot. In the past I've focused on what I couldn't do, squats. That's a great outlook, to focus on what I can do.

jeff i never comment on anything but you really moved me with this video. the reason i train is because of my father. like you & your brother, we didn't have a lot of common ground & i wanted to have more to talk about with him. after years of him telling me "ya gotta get in shape" in his bronx italian accent we joined a gym & worked out together for about a year until he passed. my results weren't tremendous that first year but my father was so god damn proud of me for just making the change. i'm just trying to hold my end of the bargain as if he was still beside me. cheers jeff thanks for everything buddy

I workout because I enjoy it, it's not really for the looks (though that is a major plus) but it makes you FEEL good, you have more energy, motivates you to know you can do anything with hard work, and mostly, to inspire people to be more. That's it for me.

This is one of the best videos I've seen on KZfaq. The point of this video is to make us think about ourselves, to really think deeply about ourselves, or, what is called, to "reflect" about ourselves. If we really try to do this, really think about why we want or do what we want or do, we'll can learn a lot.

I train because I saw one of my colleague got a stroke in a very young age, and than my neighbour and a fellow worker at nearby office also. I was 35 at that time and they about in the same age as me! That time I weighted 105 kg, 170 cm. I felt dizzy a lot, I sick a lot, even I didn't have enough breath to climb a stairs! When they got stroke in relatively close time, as I visited them, my tought was "Oh my goodness.... What will happen If I be like them? I probably will never be able to work anymore. What will happen to my wife, my child? I'll become a burden to them for the rest of my life!" That was my wake up call. I said: "I don't want to be like them! I wan't to be healthy! I want to be with my wife and my child for a long long time. I want to be someone useful!" Than I started to have Intermintent fasting. It was sooo....hard. I almost pass out for the first time. But I forced myself. I start to eat clean. I jog, then run, then sprint. And I do bodyweight workout, and... lift weights! It's been four years, going on five years. I'm 75 kg now, able-bodied, have a well developed muscle, slim four pack figure in almost my 40's. And the best thing is.... thank God, I'm healthy! And, Jeff, thank you for asking. Thank you to remind me why I'm here!

I work out every morning because it’s a great way to nurture my WHOLE LIFE. My brain, my physiology, my emotions, self control, confidence and I suspect it does me good in a lot of ways that aren’t quite as apparent. Although I’ve had phases in my life in which I’ve worked out, I’ve never developed a daily routine. These days I’m 2 months into a daily morning routine and I can’t believe I’ve never done this before. It changes the nature of my day, every day, for the better. I wish you guys made DVD’s of your programs!

I started working out as my grandad was a gymnast and I knew by being 14 was quite late to reach his level. By that time i was anorexic after being fat and my friends started lifting so I thought it was the thing to do. After 3 or 4 years of working out I never got impressive results. After I researched and started to learn about anatomy and nutrition and by my age range 20 to 30 I had different forms . From 6 % bf to a a clean bulk muscular look. I did it to be better then others, to get more girls but at the end it became a habbit. Helps me to overcome things in life,i feel healthier, boosts my confidence as i know everyday i still have it. In terms of girls. It isnt about looks. In terms to always have 6packs ,the ripped look in general or a muscular big size im not interested as i had it all. My personal thing is to combine bodybuilding with basic gymnastic elements. In terms like why to do a pull up if the on on rings brings more tension and you need to stabilize your muscles. Same goes to dips on rings and isometrics

The real reason I work out: to be the best person I can be, bar-non. If I'm not working out (weightlifting, running, and the 1 day/week CrossFit training) I begin to feel sluggish (mentally & physically). Without working out, I'm not able to survive on 6 hours of sleep, being able to fall asleep quickly, have the energy through out the day to do what I need to do, and just feel good. The looking good, the stares I get from people both in the gym and wherever I'm at, or compliments I get... that's secondary. Personally, to workout to get the ladies is not a good motivator. Ultimately, you have to do it because it's for you. Les Browns says it best, "Do the things that you know you need to do like your life depends on it. You know why? Because it does."
