Why is it that when we play a nice, mid-tempo or even uptempo groove, our playing sounds fine. But then as we begin slowing it down to 70, 60, 55bpm, it gets shakier, choppier, and clumsier. You may think there’s an obvious answer to this (that we just need to work on our time!), but today I’m proposing a deeper issue going on. You CAN smoothen out and NOT RUSH your slow grooves when you implement this technique I’m teaching you today. Let’s dig in.

Exactly, I found myself playing @50 bpm, and in order to keep the tempo on the ride accurate, I raised the stick nearly over my head in long sweeping motion. Worked perfectly and I was very comfortable playing at that tempo.

Thanks, great lesson! Watched this on my lunch break and tried as soon as I got home. Noticeable improvements within minutes. Can’t wait to see the affect on my fast playing after laying low and playing slow for a bit.

This was super helpful as I’m working on my slow technique. I hadn’t thought about pulling the sound out of the drum before, but I could instantly feel a difference and have more control. Thanks, Stephen!!

You've got a great feel when you play...one of the things that stands out with you in my opinion; Your sound and feel: smooth and airy...very light... if that makes sense!. So, yea i agree with the motion concept...it clearly has, and is working.

To be honest this is the essence of the drumming and for me the answer for the question why i'm struggling to be in time/sound good. The faster you realize that the better...

Absolutely, it’s what you don’t play that makes the magic sometimes.

This is important, flowing up and down strokes using arm, wrists, etc are the most natural way to play flowing ideas at all tempos, Thanks!!

I'm a novice drummer. I can think of two other reasons why a slower groove may feel choppy or stilted: One reason may be that a busier or a faster groove hides sloppy drumming whereas a sparse groove lays it bare. The other reason may be that when you slow a groove down (perhaps to learn a challenging pattern) it may become harder to feel the groove. I often play pieces slowly as a way to learn new grooves that I may not have the chops to play at the intended speed. Every groove seems to have a certain threshold that you have to reach for it to feel good. Play it too slow and it doesn't feel right. Play it too fast and it gets sloppy, sounds bad and doesn't feel right. In any case, the bottom line is - if I can feel it, then I can play it smoothly. If I'm not feeling it, then the timing is off and it sounds terrible.

Yeah, you have to actively think about that when playing marimba, because of you don't lift it back up, it'll almost just stay on the key, and you'll get a dead note. You don't have to think about that on drums, because the sick bounces really easily.

40bpm! Even 30 is somewhat tuned in. Using the lowest setting on my metronome app is a goal: 10bpm.

Mark my words, this so-called "extra" motion will help drummers play with a much steadier tempo. There's no pocket without it.
