In this video, I give an update about the project uproot course that was designed by Matt (matt vs japan, MIA, Refold) and Ken Cannon (Japanese through anime, Protocol 80) to help Japanese learners learn pitch accent in order to sound more like a native Japanese speaker. Project uproot is a course that received great controversy when it was announced due to the marketing used and the price of the course. This is a review of that course which is meant to improve the learners pitch accent and intonation in Japanese. Many Japanese learners in the ajatt (all japanese all the time), DJT (daily japanese thread), and Refold (formerly mass immersion approach) were disillusioned by the promotion used to market the course. I am taking the project uproot course for the purpose of review and to help people learning Japanese to be able to decide if they want to spend their money on this course or not. I also talk about the new scam that MattVSJapan and Ken Cannon are selling. Refold was once called Mass Immersion Approach, which was based on AJATT (All Japanese All the Time.)

You are an absolute moron to think Matt is not a scam artist as you stated in a recent video. Matt's entire stint on KZfaq has been about ingraining the idea that to learn a language all you need to do is lots of reading and listening, to build up vocab through anki and to shadow other people's accents whilst learning about pitch accent. One doesn't need any textbooks, grammar manuals, classes or teachers. This new project of his is just him being your teacher and teaching you about the Japanese language. THE LITERAL ANTITHESIS TO EVERYTHING HE HAS EVER TAUGHT. He's just preying on people who just follow his every word.

Very short sighted on one hand, but on the other, he smartly distanced himself from the Refold brand and is undoubtedly still making a good percentage off that, so he can milk his personal brand and still have something to fall back on.

The way to get around “reading creates improper pitch” is to do one of the following. The first is to read w/ corresponding audiobooks so that you can hear the native pronunciation. This is more like “being read to” rather than you reading it yourself- your eyes just following along the page as the narrator dictates the pace. The second option is to read aloud and have a native speaker correct your accent/intonation, This is a great tool for working on your pronunciation as you are forced to verbalize everything you can read and say it correctly. Reading is a great tool for improving your Japanese- the complex vocabulary, grammar, and sentence structure are really useful for getting you to a higher level of literacy and fluency. Adding in those two method above ensures that you can make these great language gains while still working to improve your accent. Not reading is really just the “nuclear alternative” that isn’t a good solution as it doesn’t address the problem head-on.

Hey, thanks for this video! I remember when they started marketing Uproot and it seemed like they had discovered something entirely new. I was just expecting for a video like yours to confirm my suspicions. Just marketing. And is it just me or is that Ken guy just too good with words? It's scary. Well at least Refold seems to be going in a way better direction now.

I think this video is great to expose it and it was funny was well, the irony and stuff. But I thought you were going to shit harder on them and maybe express more your regret on falling for the trap of Project Uproot, which is fine that you did, I think it is admirable that you wanted to badly to learn japanese and was willing to try new stuff at the time, because obviously you weren't seeing it as a scam in the first place, nothing to be shamed for, seriously. You did other video analyzing their strategy, but their strategy is even more disingenuous than that actually, if you look the Anacreon edits of how Matt in private conversations admits his strategy to grab money that he based on how Katsumoto got tons of money, not only that, but he finds a way to justify it in his head saying that he is offering what people want and he doesn't believe that more than 10% of people succeed anyways and stuff. I don't think Matt is inherently evil or something, I don't like that term anyway, like saying someone is evil because of something that is not a criminal activity at all. But definitely he is way more disingenuous than most teachers and educators and he wanted something out of his 10+ plus years of specializing in something and doesn't care if they use insane marketing strategies. But it is just insane they say that it is possible to be "fluent" in Japanese in 2 years. But you have put that well, that is a "shit term" and we should get rid of that.

Matt has always been toxic, this is to be expected. I honestly can't see how people praise one dude who literally got depressed because of his obsesion with Japanese and didn't understand the culture at that time. A dude who claims Japanese people see you as a filthy foreign unless you have a C2. Man, let's all call out on this dude like he really needs to be censored. I'm glad he left Refold 'cause he's not doing any good to anyone. I really don't understand how people go this far in the name of watching anime without subs, I'm not saying you who's reading this I'm saying those whose entire motivation to learn a language is anime... I try my best to respect you all, long live the European languages.

I've always seen the dude as a toxic and arrogant person. I'm really amazed at how this has gone to the point people are lauding him over other people who deserve more respect... like Steve Kauffman who's an older man and therefore deserves to be respected got bullied by Matt's entourage of followers. Let's stop this madness, or people will get depressed just like he did because of his obsesion.

@@zahleerSteve Kauffman was pretty arrogant in that interview until he actually heard Matt speak Japanese. You could tell he went from ‘This little shit who thinks too much about himself’ to ‘Oh…’. just looking at his facial expressions. I think he just thinks that learning lots of languages for reading is the ultimate bliss and everyone else who has a different goal (learning one language to the point of near perfection) is just silly and Steve doesn’t want to waste his time on them. I think he has fairly obvious ADHD whereas Matt looks and sounds like someone living with autism. So, very different vibes

IMO listening immersion is more effective in the beginning stages, but once you’ve gotten used to the language and you’ve hit the 80% comprehension mark reading allows you to make gains faster for several reasons. 1. You’re not relying on visual stimulus to aid comprehension, 2. You encounter words faster because there are no pauses and you’re reading speed will eventually progress to where you read faster than a normal person speaks, 3. If you’re reading on a phone, ereader, or tablet, it’s much more convenient to look up words, 4. You’ll encounter words and grammar patterns that you won’t find in tv shows.

Where's the scam? Companies market in order to sell things, which involves providing value in exchange for goods and services. It's how the economy works. A one year guarantee is ridiculously good, providing it's honored, which this guy has no reason to believe it wouldn't be. I recommend you spend some time creating something of value, instead of attempting to tear down the creations of others. Also, wear clothes.
