In the U.K. we grew up with David Prowse telling us how to cross roads safely. He was the green cross code man. He taught me to stop, look and listen. Thank you for everything Lord Vader.

I completely respect David Prowse for his awesome acting and truly making the Darth Vader character come to life. I do think Earl has a fantastic voice which perfectly fit the character but they are both absolute legends.

There is very little menace in an English West Country accent at the best of times....David Prowse was from Bristol. No one told him his voice was going to deleted apparently, and his other moment of fame when a dying Vader's helmet was removed was also edited out and another actor was used. I think his work as The Green Cross Code Man gave him more satisfaction....and he probably helped save many children in the process.

I saw somewhere that when Arnold Schwarzenegger's films are dubbed into German, he doesn't do his own voice, as his Austrian accent sounds 'country yokel' in German - rather like the English West Country accent.

The worst part is that they never told Prowse they were going to dub him over. He went all out to try his best to bring Vader to life and he went to the premier and heard someone who wasn't him. Poor guy.

To be fair to David Prowse, his body acting was pretty good. The way Darth Vader moved was part of his appeal, and the energy he put into his lines so that his body movements were in sync with the lines that James Earl Jones would later deliver - that was all David.

He had to work in a costume that covered him from head to toe and he still managed to convey Vader's emotions perfectly, especially in the scene in Return Of The Jedi where Luke surrenders to him on the moon of Endor. When Luke says "then my father is truly dead", you could tell that that cut Vader to the bone. Well, what was left of it, anyway.

In this movie, yes. But he had a bit of a skirmish with Lucas and co. in V and VI because he felt “why do I need to remember Vader’s lines if my voice is gonna be dubbed over?” which caused a lot of confusion for his costars since he’d never recite his lines, therefore every actor had to work harder to remember his lines because a huge part of reciting book is knowing your cues so you could know what to say and when.

James, he did not made ‘darth’, but made what ‘vader’ sounded like. He’s actually more of a robot with a brain of a sith. And also the voice was more of a robot’s tts voice. And he actually made it sound much darker and deeper, and pretty much slower so it can go with the look. I love his voice.

@@GhostFire455 Well, think about it like this. The Empire wasn't heavy handed to most citizens. They kept order. Gun and drug runners through the systems were harshly punished. Mercenaries and other threats were kept in check. The markets and trade routes were safe and free from threats. The Empire was destroyed by the Rebels and all of that would very quickly change. It would become chaos. Bandits would prey on travelers. The Rebel Alliance has no way to protect the systems and planets like the Empire did. They were an overall moral good.

I find it funny that he didn't want to be credited in this movie, because it would "ruin his career." But when the franchise took off, and his "career" wasn't all that successful, he's suddenly trying to fight for his recognition as Darth Vader. The guy has a fucking website up bragging about the roll. Apparently he wasn't even in the Darth Vader suit whenever there was running or fighting involved, only dialogue scenes. He was literally just a stand-in

It’s cool that he actually spoke the lines, but I give props to his acting. Prowse wore a mask the whole time so he had to show his emotions through body language/movement. His voice may not sound intimidating, but he did an excellent job of displaying his presence whenever he entered the room and you can feel that when watching the movie. James Earl Jones and David Prowse ARE Darth Vader

Prowse is so underappreciated and got so shafted by Lucas. I understand that they needed a more menacing voice since Prowse just sounded like...well...a guy. But he was never TOLD his voice was going to be removed and was not just surprised but justifiably angry at the premiere. I would be too if I played one of the most iconic villain's in pop culture and nobody even knew and wound up getting relatively little in the way of pay compared to everyone else including his "voice". I'm sure he would have agreed to it (maybe with the stipulation his name got a good place on the poster? In the 80's, I attended a sci-fi convention where it was advertised that the real "Darth Vader" would be appearing. Everybody was excited thinking it would be James Earl Jones, who by then after Conan the Barbarian and other acting roles, was becoming famous in his own right. But then this huge white guy shows up (David Prowse) and everyone was confused about who that was. He talked in that high, British voice and no one could believe he was really Darth Vader. This was before the internet, before it was common knowledge that the voice and person in the costume were two different people. But David Prowse was a great guest at the convention and incredibly friendly to everyone.

To be fair, David Prowse delivering the actual lines and acting them out, as hilarious as it was, probably helped the other actors out immensely. Prowse gave them an actual, albeit hilarious vocal performance they could play off of. It also probably helped his own physical performance too. Darth Vader is a team effort and Prowse brought his A game.

If you think about it, this still means David Prowse was the one who set the pacing and emotional tone of how the lines were going to be read, because it still had to match his visual timing. Jones changed the timbre and mood and gave the lines more weight. They'd be good volleyball partners, as Prowse set it up and Jones spiked it.

*James Earl Jones actually chose to go uncredited for the films!* He considered David Prowse’s performance inside the Vader costume to be more defining of the two of them. Prowse, after all, had to wear the big costume and he spoke all of Vader’s lines from inside the helmet during the filming. I think that’s *awesome* of him!!! 😁

David Prowse had the physically imposing build and stature for Vader, but not the voice. Vader needed to have a voice to match his intimidating presence. James Earl Jones was perfect. A lot of people consider James Earl Jones to be what made Vader's character so great, but it was the combination of Prowse's physical presence and Jones' deep, booming voice that made the character great. Jones could do the voice yet lacked the build while Prowse had the build but lacked the voice. They were both intricate parts.

If I recall correctly, Prowse was never told that his voice would be replaced. After the movies' huge success, he never got to keep any memorabilia and was barely credited. He didn't even get the luxury of doing all the iconic lightsaber fights or even appearing as the face of Anakin from under the mask (a fact which was also kept secret from him). All the credit went to Jones, and while it was well deserved, almost nobody remembers Prowse, the 6'6 bodybuilder, just because he had a goofy accent and had a problem holding a movie prop. If it wasn't for his physique, Darth Vader wouldn't have been nearly as cool and threatening as we all remember!
