If you want to add a little power to your teep, touch your ass with your heel as you bring your knee up.

Again, the Defense Challenge show was absolutely fantastic! Hope to see everyone back, with maybe additional contestants? Possibly Tommy Moore, Tony Jeffries, Golden Bell Training, Jessie Enkamp, McDojo, Samurai, GarandThumb, Master Wong, or Michael Jai White? The show needs a major network ..it's that good!

Think about your front kick like a stomp, this is the reason you lean back, stomping develops power from the posterior chain (back/glutes) and transmits it better through the heel. For maximum power, do this as you are pushing off with the balance foot.

I really appreciate how you tailor the concept to the individual. The guy in the beginning was having trouble moving his back foot when he jabbed, and you noticed that he naturally did it better with a cross and took it from there. Great job coach! 👏

"You're probably going to feel like you need to poop at some point." I felt that in my soul! The closest I have ever come to soiling myself during training was immediately after catching a solid front kick to the intestines. I've been choked out a few times, and felt brutal pressure on the guts from a tight body triangle, but nothing had me running to the toilet faster than taking that front kick a little low. It wasn't a groin shot, but I let my sparring partner think that's why I left the mats, cuz the truth was much more embarrassing.

Every time I watch your videos, I'm impressed by how good an instructor you are. Your ability to systematically deconstruct and reassemble a skill is really top notch. Your integration of perception in the tactics is also really really smartly done. I think it's maybe been a while since you did a pure technique video like you used to do all the time. They're great.

Great seminar! For self defense purposes, it's good to sometimes train in kicking drills with your street shoes on. Many toe and ankle forms for certain kicks like ball of the foot front kick, blade of the foot side thrust kick etc don't work with many common street shoes so you may have to adjust your barefoot toe and ankle form to make them work.

Chinese folk hero Wong Fei Hong, portrayed by Jackie Chan in the drunken master movies and Jet Li in the Once Upon a Time in China series was famous for using a "No-Shadow"/"Shadowless" kick. In the movies it looks like Mortal Kombat's bicycle kick but in practice it was a technique where you would distract with the hands and land a low kick. This definitely qualifies as the setup hides the tell or "shadow".

Learn how to kick a tree without hurting yourself or falling down, humans are much easier to kick full power without falling down compared to a tree. I can literally fold men in half with my side and front heel kicks (front heel kick is different from teep and can actually penetrate through opponents structure and break it). But learning to land with your heel or footpad can be hard for some noobs and if you mess up and toekick a tree you are going to break your foot. Some Wing Chun gyms will have a giant treetrunk built into the ground or with legs for you to kick. And heel kicking it feels really good for your lower back if you have back problems. Kicking something that heavy teaches you to land your heel right so your whole bodyweight actually goes into the kick instead of doing a pansy ass flick kick.

The instructor working with me kept giving the cue "drive your hips forward" with the front kick, but the "lean back" one definitely helped me much more when he finally gave it. That was great information, and now has me knowing WHY it works and is a good cue. Now to continue to work on sucking a little bit less, and eventually being kind of good at it. For a month or two I can't afford in person training, so definitely can't justify online courses, but definitely bookmarked for later.

Icy mike, I’d love to train with you. Can you do a video for those of us with disabilities? I use a wheelchair, I’m not bound to it, but I have several limitations. I can scrap good for a minute, but each action has a huuuge cost. Example, I can kick, but a kick might dislocate my ankle and knee, probably even my hip. If I throw a punch, any punch could be the one to dislocate my shoulder or my wrist or elbow. It does come with a slight benefit, I have insane reach, each joint and hyper extend to an insane degree. It’s also very hard to put me in arm bars and joint locks because the joints can extend easily. So I’d love to get some advice for when running isn’t an option. I’ve been in plenty of fights when I was younger, but now I’m almost 40 and gotta rethink how I would fight to defend if I ever need to.

In a street fight it's a better tactic to try and keep both feet on the ground as much as possible. Voluntarily removing a point of contact for escape , balance etc is not a good plan. For competition it's fine to do whatever but in a real fight you want to stay on your feet, not go to the ground, and stay on both feet. You can't run or evade on one foot or on your back. MMA with "rules" is not realistic on the streets. If you want to be realistic then start eye gouging, throat punching, nut punching, open hand strikes to the head(to keep from breaking your fingers/hand) head butts, bare elbows etc. I have to reedit......I did see your force on force with Craig Douglas..... That stuff is way way more like a real fight.....as I think you'll agree. Why are you not teaching that?

I said if it's a competition that's fine.....miss that part? And tell me what part of my statement(s) is incorrect in a real fight. You will fight the way you train . People like Lee Morrison, Tony Blauer, Tom Sotis, Jim Grover, and Craig Douglas can give you a few tips if you need it. You don't have to take it from me. I get it. It's fine. MMA stuff is what fills classes. Fist Helmets etc are expensive... I absolutely have zero doubt you can fight....I have seen many of your videos. ....but training for kickboxing or MMA is way different than training to defend yourself. You take it to the ground in the street and you get your head punted by the guys buddy....you rely on kicks and you get dumped. Ive got friends with plates in their heads to prove it. Fights are usually ambushes.....you train from that point....the back of the OODA loop.

Side kick has to be thrown from a more or less bladed stance. Front kick can be thrown squared up. This is important for grappling. Side kick partially exposes your back, which in MMA or self defense is undesirable. Front kick doesn't. Practice kicking in a grappling environment.
