It goes back further to the World Big League in 1959, started by Rikidōzan the godfather of Puroresu. It was adapted by Giant Baba in 72 for the Champion Carnival and Inoki in 74

For those of you wondering why Chono seemed like such a top guy at the start of his career: He broke his neck in a match against a very young Steve Austin via sit out pile driver, the same move that would almost end Austins career in 1997. After the injury Chono took serious time off to heal and had change his wrestling style completely! Eventually becoming a clad in black badass heel, so charismatic was the man that he became known has "The Black Charisma".

Woah, what a blast from the past. I discovered how great Japan's wrestling was in the mid 90's. I already was a huge wrestling fan, watching WWF and WCW but I was hungry for more. Back then, internet didn't have everything, there was no KZfaq and downloading speeds were extremely slow, so you couldn't stream anything, but I was lucky enough to know a guy who collected VHS tapes of wrestling, New Japan, All Japan, FMW, etc... That's how I first saw Antonio Inoki, Riki Chōshū, Tiger Mask, the Great Sasuke and my favorite was the late Eiji Ezaki better known as Hayabusa. Scott Norton was huge in Japan and almost turned into a jobber in WCW, such a shame. I also figured out many wrestlers in WWF actually had a much wider set of moves but Vince McMahon simply didn't want them to execute them. Even Hulk Hogan featured a broader array of skills during his tenure in Japan. From this day I recognized Japanese wrestling as the real deal and I was hooked forever. I see many elements of Japanese wrestling in AEW's events so far. I think now is the time for NJPW to take on the western world.
