There's something about this movie that just has it all. Captures that post war Americana just perfectly. The soundtrack, the shot setup, the actors - I just love this whole movie.

I love old movies and have been watching dozens of them on KZfaq lately. I tried to watch The Red House several months ago, because I've always loved Edward G. Robinson; but for whatever reason, just couldn't get interested. I'm glad I tried again tonight because it's a really great movie. Judith Anderson was wonderful in the role of Ellen. All of the actors were top-notch. Thanks for uploading this great film.

Edward G. Robinson going mad in this is almost his going mad as "the Sea Wolf" by Jack London! God he was the best! Wow! And Judith Anderson and Allene Roberts what truly great classically trained actresses. Luv this film!

My mom turned me on to this movie when I was 13 or 14 years old. Love it, great movie, one of my favorites. Blew me away at the end was not expecting that!

I just finished watching 3 movies with Edward G. where he was the good guy, so this was a change. I liked his line in this one, "Even the lowest creature has more courage than any human"

What a good little movie. Nice.

Misplaced love - the story of humanity.

Without spoiling anything, the ending reminded me of Scorsese's Cape fear and also the mystery of the woods reminded me of David Lynch. I think this film even influenced The Night of the Hunter. Anyway that's my take on a first-time watch. Lots of nice cinematic moments with no dialogue. The music building during scenes in the woods. Great cast too. Including Aussie Judith Anderson.

40:00 -- It was impossible for me not to think of Little Red Riding Hood and the Big, Bad Wolf. The way he's leaning with feigned casualness against the tree, his thumbs hooked in his pant tops ...

Miss Ellen is the lady that plays Memnet, in the 10 commandments with Charlton Heston. She plays the temple Maid of neffrettetti, the daughter of ramesis, that fell in love with Moses, and she ends up pushing her from the balcony, because she knew Moses was the son of a Hebrew slave and was scared she might reveal Moses real birth right

What a wonderful movie! From start to finish the characters, setting and music are just beautiful. Thank you for sharing. It helps me through the hard times.

This movie reminds me of The Unseen with Barbara Bach. The film's content and the how Edward G. Robertson sickness almost destroys his "niece/daughter" is just sleazy and horrifying. I would call this a horror movie, because the last 25 minutes switches into a Fatal Attraction obsession. The real hero is Judith Anderson, how she sacrifices herself to save the girl.

It was a beautiful compelling film... maybe retitled the Drowning Man. You know the man who cannot face up to what he's done and takes down everyone around him. It is unfortunately, a fairly common story. Is his sister helping him or enabling him? (rhetorical)

women and men were dress so kind and beautiful. I wish the old day coming back. 2021 is hell on earth now. People donot want to cover clothes on them in public.

The film begins with the narrator saying that roads are beating back the unknown darkness of ancient forests. It was the attitude of the time, nature was seen as something that had to be fought and controlled by us humans, not something beautiful that we have to work with, not against. Hopefully our past disasters have changed our minds.

I wonder if there was a book with this story. I somehow seem to think that I may have read a very similar story. Good film noir anyway.

On these old movies, the girl’s room is always so pretty with a window overlooking a lake. And her guardians love her so much. Kind of a twist I wasn’t expecting. You have a young senior in high school, adopted being raised in a loving home. There is town gossip but nothing about the couple who disappeared or how the brother and sister gained a child. The girl wants to get farm help for her father figure but picks a boy she has a crush on and is dating someone else. They never explained how Teller got $750 which was a lot back then for living in the woods and whether he lived in the red cabin. The sister knew what the brother had done and kept his secret for 16 years, giving up the one chance she had for love, marriage and children. Although she got to help raise Meg. The doctor must have asked where the child came from. Maybe he even delivered Meg. I kind of don’t know why they still couldn’t get married, live on the farm and keep her brother and Meg under their roof. But the sister never turned her brother in, only loved and forgave him. He killed out of jealous rage even though Jeanie was married to someone else. But after his jealous rage, he turned into a loving father figure for 16 years until a guy came into Meg’s life simultaneously while Nate was curious and disobeyed orders to stay out of the woods. That appeared to have opened up skeletons in the closet for the loving father figure to the point he went off the deep end. Why the sister didn’t see it coming. Why they didn’t move away a long time ago or get him help. Even while dying, the sister told Meg to have pity and to love her father figure guardian and the first thing Meg does is go into the house and make him feel that she hates him and will be leaving. The sister is already dead, the family is falling apart, the brother is off the deep end and Nate again has to go into the woods causing all of them to go out after him. Meg begged Pete to go get Nate and it just made things worst until he almost killed Meg and then killed himself.

The way Nate kissed his mother goodbye 🥴.

Seems that Petey Boy had a few problems and just kept repeating that he had complete immunity.😅

i LOVE the red house 1947. to me it is one of the most freudian films EVER! in danny peary's review of king kong his theory is that skull island represents the subconscious mind of carl denham. this theory can easily be applied to the ox head woods and edward g. robinson's character in the red house 1947. just as the dark memories of the past are repressed (or least he attempts to repress them) in the back of his mind, the red house is buried deep within the ox head woods. EGR can not guard the ox head woods. he has a bad leg. often in cinema freudian terms a lame leg = impotence. he hires a much younger, much more virile man for the job (rory calhoun) who is always popping off his rifle (a phallic symbol). when the teens go searching for the red house their quest is in vain as one 'non-believer' is present and distractions are a plenty. yet when the young girl goes to sleep her subconscious mind unlocks the deep buried memory of the secret location of the red house. she awakens and goes straight to the red house!

When I watch these old films , even those made pre 2000 , my first observation is women without body graffiti. Sad how women of all ages today , think 'ink shaped' spiders , crabs and snakes somehow enhances their looks or makes them more appealing. Ofcourse, I forgot to mention the personal body statements they claim to make as to why they have them . I cannot imagine the old Hollywood greats like Jane Russel , Judy Garland , Ginger Rogers , Marilyn Monroe 'sporting' such eyesores . 🤔🆓✝️🇬🇧

This is pretty good, even the stereotypical characters have some originality. There is the overbearing father who thinks he can give orders to a 17 year old, the hot-headed high school boy who is worried about being thought yellow--whatever that means--and who does not realize that not doing foolish things is the courageous thing. Then there is the gun-happy hunter man dumber than the animals he is supposed to shoot. There are a couple of stretches in the plot, like the question of money.

These are creepy people doing creepy things. Watch out.

Thirty minutes in. Somehow the actor who played Nath, Lon McCallister, is playing a character that is stupid, rude and obnoxious to all the people he encounters. Not to mention he is a lousy actor. But he also strikes me as someone in real life acts the same way. Hard to watch, when everyone else performs admirably.

Horrible, just horrible. I wanted to return to a more wholesome time, if only for an hour, but was highly disappointed; I made it only a little more than halfway but can't imagine anything which might redeem the work. A truly sick, twisted storyline all along the way.
