THE REVIEW
I watch each episode with my own commentary, often pausing the scenes to get my words out without having to talk over the episode, and also to point out and analyze the show's art and animation. I have seen each episode already growing up, so these reviews are to compare and contrast the five categories listed below.
PLOT (Scaled from 1 to 5 Points)
The foundation of the episode. Uniqueness and overused tropes are taken into account, but it is also judged on how well it tells the story of the episode. An episode can score a 5 even with a basic/ cliche plotline as long as it has good pacing, worthy use of its tropes, and feels well-polished. An episode can lose points due to plotholes, uneven storytelling, and relying too heavily on cliches to do the work for it.
CHARACTERIZATION (Scaled from 1 to 5 Points)
How well the characters are written. Do they feel like themselves compared to the grand narrative of the franchise? Are the supporting or one-off characters interesting, or pure plot devices? Did the humor land? Did the actions and character motivations make sense?
VISUALS (Scaled from 1 to 5 Points)
Basically, everything that happens on-screen. Character Design. Animation. Backgrounds. Creative mechanics and solutions. If there is CGI or digital effects added, how well do they blend into the show, and were they used as an enhancement, or a crutch?
IMPORTANCE (Scaled from 1 to 5 Points)
This includes, but is not strictly based on, how important the episodes are to the current story arc (if there is one) or the general narrative of the Ben 10 Franchise. Points can also be awarded for how impactful the episode was, or how favored/ important it is to the general Ben 10 fanbase. I ask myself, "If I skipped this, would I be missing out on the 'Ben 10 Experience?' "
ENTERTAINMENT (Scaled from 1 to 5)
Pretty much the most important part of developing a tv show. You can be perfect in all four of the previous categories, but the episode can still be boring. On the flip side, the episode can be absolute garbage, but still an enjoyable watch. How likely would you be to put this episode on if you were in the mood to watch Ben 10?

@@kidprime6863 I hated how they shoehorned Kai back into the series, even though it was far, FAR too late to re-establish her as a character, let alone Ben's love interest, especially when she had only two appearances in OG and seven in OV, which makes the wasted potential of Esther all the more annoying.

EDIT: When making the new assets for the OV Breakdowns, I added the +1 to the Hero Time counter, but forgot to actually change the number. It should read 32, not 31. This has been fixed in future Breakdowns. Kuro, here. This video was recorded as a Full Breakdown, but unfortunately, the footage was mostly unusable in the editing due to an issue when recording. I am sorry to say that this had to be reduced to a Quick Review. To make up for this, I am releasing it here on the main channel, along with an additional video tomorrow, too. I’m sure this is upsetting, especially since Breakdowns have been scarcely uploaded lately. Your disappointment is understood, but my options were limited.

Ester is literally the only Ben romance that wasnt toxic beyond recovery. They had an ok dynamic, they liked each other for who they were and they actually could spend time together without having an argument. But because a literal child said something about destiny, they just werent ment to be, I guess

Hearing that Ester is only in about 5 episodes was the most surprising part of this to me. She felt like a far more prominent character that I thought I remembered seeing pretty regularly throughout, so definitely had an impact on me. It's unfortunate the reality doesn't hold up and that she was more snuffed than I realized.

Yeah, that's odd. For as broken as Ben and Julie's relationship was, they at least dedicated time to having Ben and Julie do boyfriend/girlfriend things together. Going on dates, Ben going to Julie's games, Julie hanging out at Ben's house, etc. While Ben and Ester are a good pairing, they never put in the effort to treat them as a proper relationship. I wonder if they did that to make Ben closer to his kid self.

The fact that yuri’s wife played her made the bond and chemistry seem more genuine compared to Ben and Kai. Never understood how the writers fumbled this one this bad over some “destiny” bs. What made it worse was the the way they wrote her off tho, like not having a deep one to one with Ben then choosing to remain as close friends but instead just throwing her away with some biker dude

The concept of destiny for Ben and Kai was also just stupid. In a series with several aliens that can flat out change reality or manipulate time this is the one event that just HAS to happen apparently? They should have just resolved it by having Ken worrying about this until its revealed that through time travel multiverse bs his past is still secure no matter who prime ben marries in the future and he won't fade from existence but nah Kai was in the classic series so she must be pushed as to the extent of being Ben's canon event. It also neutered potential options ben had for love interests since he's only 16 canonically and has a lot of time to think about this stuff and imo it always would've been more interesting to see him paired with an alien and could lead to fun gags like him running into a tokustar hybrid ken from an alternate future or something. Imo one of the worst parts of omniverse was Ben's harem mess of a love life. I remember losing interest to finally watch the show for a week after the julie break up episode because it just made me actively dislike several of the characters involved.

For me it's either Julie or Ester. Sadly Julie was a victim of Ben's sporadic characterization and Ester got screwed by "fate" as Ben was "fated" to end up with someone he had an alien fetish.

I love how this is another Tara Platt character that is close to a Yuri Lowenthal character. As time goes on it happens more often in their careers, from Sasuke and Temari, Ben and Jennifer Nocturne, then Esther, and their biggest roles together with funniest naming conversation, Spider-Man and Yuri Watanabe. Like with Laura Bailey and Travis Willingham, Matthew Mercer or Steve Blum amd Mary Elizabeth McGylnn, your chemistry helps if your actually married in real life lol

Fun fact: Ester and Ben are both voiced by Yuri Lowenthal and Tara Platt both are couple in real life. They both voice in Spider-Man (Video Game), Naruto and many more. They both voice Doofus Drake’s parents in Ducktales 2017.

Yeah and then a telapath alien like Dr. Psychobus or Albedo starts trying to get into Ben's head at the same time. And then the villain in question shows up and has Ben on the ropes, and Julie and or Esther steps in and is like "YOU ARE NOT RUINING THSI DATE" and kicks their ass. I mean this just writes itself.

Even if the show didn't really lose anything with Ester I really wish she was a main stay and became Ben's love interest. Julie and Ben's relationship really declined in UA and having Ben date an alien woman, one that cares about him for himself and not his transformations, as well as not being entirely on the right side from the begining had so much potential. Which makes the Kai "fate" thing rub salt in the wound even harder

in retrospective i can see why they ended ben and julie's relation and i grew to accept it what i can not accept is the fact that they created ester, make a great pair between her and ben in one episode...and then go on to completely ignore her and only have her show up in filler episodes with unnecessary (and honestly annoying) drama involving ben's love life to in the end discard her in favor of kai of all people

Julie suffered the most with the sudden characterization changes that came with Alien Force season 3. Ben's sudden shift in personality is highlighted most in the episode "Eye of the Beholder" wherein Ben's personality was the ABSOLUTE worst, and Julie still stays by him. It's like she loses all the confidence that made her so interesting beforehand, because "She's Ben's GF, of course she stays with him." I can see why they chose to get rid of the relationship between Ben and Julie. I don't like it, because of how it spits in the face of the Julie that was present for Alien Force seasons 1 and 2. But at the same time, after everything in UAF after AFs2, it's probably for the best that she finally dumped Ben for being so ridiculously awful and inattentive. If they want to commit to Ben being awful, Ben should suffer the consequences of those actions, permanently. In addition, Ben being a bachellor is what gave us his sort of "Rogue's Gallery" of potential crushes in Omniverse, like Looma Red-Wind and her obsession, Ester and her almost Catwoman-like vibe in this episode, and later, Attea and Bullfrag. I can't be mad about the choice they made because it did result in some great characters and stories. That last sentence is actually how I feel about Omniverse as a whole: I can't be mad about the many canon changes, even the ones that shit on Ben Prime's legacy, because Omniverse (at its peak) is IMO the best Ben 10 show.

I really enjoy Ester's character. I've always thought she could've worked really well as the third member of Ben's new trio. The middle ground between the two. Being more streetwise while Ben has more practical experience and Rook more academic. Also, her being half human would've given her an interesting perspective in addition to Ben and Rook. It is weird the episode forgets Julia exists tho.

I love that we got to see suitless NRG in this episode. It's a cool idea and I wish we got to see more of him, maybe as a sort of Alien X lite where he takes off the suit in situations dire enough that the radiation is the least of the problems

If i got to talk to the writers one of the questions I'd have to ask is why they choose to write Ben like this when it comes to relationships. Its like their competing with eachother for how hard they can make Ben drop the ball.

Agreed, cause if we look to the other main couple of the show, Gwen and Kevin, was pretty well done; They both had great chemistry, cared for each other and their relationship never felt toxic or melodramatic in any bad way (sure they had episodes when they argue or some others where there was a love triangle with some other character like Michael, but never to the point of being excesive or annoying to watch, unlike the episodes of Ben and Julie), so I don't understand how they managed to f*ck up all of Ben's relationships and choose the most toxic of them as his endgame . Seriously, no one liked Kai in the original series, so there was no reason to bring her back. Heck, even Ken story could have worked without the need of using Kai as his mother, cause both Julie or Esther could have filled the same rol and his story, both in the original series aswell as omniverse could be the same (although, in Esther case it would be difficult to explain how Kenny didn't inherit her powers).

Yeah that was one of the things that confused me a lot while I was watching Omniverse. Esther is introduced, and like half of the episode felt like Ben trying to form a romance with her. And I was like, "Oh? Well, I guess he might have broken up with Julie, okay." Then she comes back and Ben's like, "Hey whats this guy doing with my girlfriend?" And I'm not even kidding, as soon as be called Julie his girlfriend after everything with Esther and Looma, I literally bursted out laughing. I wss like, "Are you SURE she's hpur girlfriend?!" I loved Ben's and Julie's relationship, but it's just sad that their first interaction in omniverse resulted in laughter rather than being haply to see them again

Honestly I agree on the difference between a younger Ben and Omniverse Ben's experience. Ben at this point has fought so many battles that at this point most minor conflicts are at max just busy work. Nothing too hard or difficult but enough that it's time consuming, something boring that you can do casually but nothing you'd really panic over.

What I've always liked about Julie is although she's probably not the best out of the all of the love interests Ben has had throughout the franchise she has always helped him in the most important main plots that were greatly important the final chapter of the highbreed arc, helping in the ultimate kevin rampage, she was somewhat vital for the dagon arc and despite her flaws she was pretty good in my opinion. If only the writers had not written her out and treated her badly.

I really liked Esther. She's fun, has the most chemistry with Ben, and is the only Ben Girlfreind who doesn't complain when he has to do hero stuff. I didn't really get why people were mad with Julie and Ben breaking up. I mean that relationship was going nowhere, they constantly fought over dumb stuff, so I was glad that they broke them up even if it was over something done. And then they went and did all that with Ester later on and I was like "Oooooh I get it now". God Omniverse's shipping is such a headache.

Ester was honestly the love interest that I thought they would settle on. All of Ben's other relationships are so weird/toxic by comparison, plus Ben being in a relationship with the leader of an entire species had some fun story potential.

Honestly, it would fit to an intergalactic hero like Ben to marry an alien princess. I mean, his grandmpa already flirted with female aliens before and even married a freaking ANODITE, so why couldn't Ben do the same? Its way more original and interesting and fits better in the show than mixing him with a Lara Croft's wannabe.

I won't lie with the new upload schedule and built up to this episode i actually thought to myself "OMG are we actually gonna get a full season where all the episodes get a breakdown?? We haven't had that since season 2 of alien force." Of course thats not really the case as short comings can happen even when you have everything planned. But its fine I'm not really upset as long as you keep doing what you love more than Ben could love Ester.

Now on one hand, I agree that Articguana should’ve been an adult ben only transformation but I like the idea that both kid and teen ben having it as an alien they don’t use but having to learn more about the alien and using them as they get older. It’s like some of the aliens adult ben used and when seeing either kid or teen Ben using them, they’re trying to get used to it.

I still lean towards Julie. She approached him directly after a soccer game when Ben was the most likeable character in his franchise. Ben in alien force was just like Gwen said: weird but funny, sweet and compassionate. What happened to Ben's hobby playing soccer anyway?

Julie was honestly great and understanding in AF, she wasn't always the damsel in distress and she lived a life outside of Ben. I'm guessing Ben just got too busy with being a plumber and all to where he doesn't play soccer as much and kinda of just stop playing.

I'm increasingly convinced that it would have been better if they had stayed with Julie instead of sucking up all this useless melodrama. They came up with several characters to replace her and not one of them succeeded in the task. They didn't know what to do with all of them and came up with reasons for them not to be together and threw all these girls out of the plot. In the end, they couldn't come up with anything better than just setting Ben up with Kai, a character from ONE episode (not counting cameos) who had no feelings for Ben before the creators remembered she existed.

I liked their relationship wayyy more than Ben/Kai and equally as much as Ben/Julie (before it went to hell in UA/Omniverse lol). Their relationship seemed more natural (probably cause their VAs are partners) and the dynamic was good

Sudden inclusion of Julie in omniverse season 2 was weird they would have explained about her in first season but they wouldn't do that since Ester seemed to be good partner but she was only for a short time. It would be better that Ben's shown as platonic towards Ester. I understood kuro Ben only is 16 he is busy with responsibility that he wasn't able to meet Julie

I still prefer Ester. Ben's at a character and series point where he's more 'alien' than human. Like I think he's spent more time in a Plumbers base and Undertown than he did high school. Just like that casual interaction of Ben "turning human" sometimes. Makes him a better....foil? Is that the word I want? For Max's original path that kept him in the Plumbers and being with Verdona at all. And Ester being more catwoman felt fun because of the dynamic that Batman and catwoman share. Kai never cared for him seemingly at all. Almost even refusing to see the transformations as other facets of Ben and instead treating them all like different people. While Julie couldn't seem to understand how actually important his job is. I'm sorry he missed your tennis game. But at least the court didn't get blown up....ya know?

Genuinely while I do like Julie Truly When compared to what Ben would’ve had with Esther would’ve been special. She’s funny, spunky and actually loves the action that Ben gets into on his job. Julie for all her good traits was always stuck with the same annoying super hero trope of “hero can’t balance time with girlfriend Vs time saving lives” But with Esther they can do it together. That and I just think her design, powers and species lore are just more interesting to watch then “oh no ben missed Julie’s tennis match”

Honestly, the whole relationship drama is one of the bigger reasons why I find it kinda hard to like Omniverse as a whole. Not the sole reason but somewhere in the top five. I loved Julie, sure sometimes she had her unreasonable moments, and I really didn't like the Flame Keepers Circle thing, but otherwise I liked that Ben had someone who gave him a bit of a break. But hey, someone clearly wanted them broken up and you know what? It happens. It stinks because she was nice and we lost Ship but whatever, we have Ester and she's still a pretty cool character so I was ok to let it slide. I think the genuine chemistry between the VAs also helped to ease any hard feelings I might've had. Then Looma and Attea came along and it was still ok because they were more there for comedy and a relationship between either of them and Ben was a fun idea to toy around with. Then Kai came along and not only did the relationship feel toxic, they did the "fated to be together trope." I'm ok with the chosen one/prophecy trope if done right like in Percy Jackson. But I don't like the fated to be together trope because it takes a certain amount of fun out of watching a relationship blossom. I think that only The Flash did it right and even then that relationship didn't always feel very earned.

Honestly, ester would've been a PERFECT partner for ben, thematically it would also make sense because ben having an alien girlfriend feels right i mean the show is about aliens and lore wise ester being kenny's mom would make sense still, maybe esters darker pink skin could explain kennys complexion, maybe kenny doesn't have esters powers like how ben dosent have allot of his grandma's powers but oh well these are only my ideas on if they never continued kai and Ben's relationship and how I could see them still being together and make sense.

Ester definitely was a Much better Relationship than Kai main reason being Kai was shoe horned in but Ester was introduced early in omniverse

The sad truth is that Ester only worked better in her debut but after that she was reduced to the stereotype of "ignored girlfriend/satellite love interest" and Ben treated her as just another fangirl, that's why I wasn't even surprised that she left him for Antonio at the end. We never saw her lead her tribe, be with Gwen and Kevin, or reveal why she's "a half-human hybrid". Heck even Fistina has a more satisfying arc that her by becoming a Plumber.

I always really liked Ben and Ester as it kind of reminds me of Spidermans relationship with Black Cat... Like if you really think about it Ben and Ester have alot in common they burdened with alot of responsibility at a young age Ben with the omnitrix and Ester being queen and I wish the show leaned more into that dynamic and maybe show how 2 people can have alot in common but that doesn't always mean they're compatable life partners making a way for Kai or Julie to enter the picture... You know something

I could have gotten over Julie is Esther was taken more seriously. I like the idea of Ben having an alien girlfriend, it would be crazy for this show NOT to have that happen. And I like her alien species too, they’re not too complicated, but are distinct from other aliens in the show. I don’t mind Arctiguana either, he had to unlock him at some point.

I’ll be honest, I’m not the biggest Shipping person when watching Ben 10, but I did enjoy Ester in Omniverse, and glad we had the episodes with her. I wasn’t a Big Ben x Julie person much, I enjoy when they were together, but the Ship episodes with Bazel, Duped and some others just makes me feel bored of them tbh. But that’s my opinion.
