This is an awesome story. I love that they took over the Confederate ship and made it a Union ship. Seriously, these are the types of people they should have statues all over the south for.

It would be especially fitting for his statue to be placed on the pedestal of a removed Confederate statue, 'stealing' its spot like he stole their ship.

Seriously! I'd go around St Louis and get signatures and find others to get more signatures, just to spite all the Confederate flag waving, cross burning Trumpanzee neighbors in my East Central Missouri Podunk shithole where black people only stop long enough to get gas.

This Story of Captain Smalls is so great;And it needs to be made into a movie! I love that he rescued his family and the other 15 families and that he purchased the house where he was enslaved. And that He went onto be in the Senate! Wow.what a story!

Another amazing account!!! I recently stumbled upon the History Makers Channel. Real archived stories such as this shared by the actual history makers. Although our story has a beginning before enslavement, these accounts echo the courage necessary to make sure our story never ends. ❤

I'm almost 60, and this is the first time I've heard this part of history. I was in my early 50's and first heard of black Wallstreet. This should be taught in all schools regardless of what the Republicans think.

Left out a few parts. Including how Smalls was a pilot under another captain during his Union service, and that captain came under Confederate fire and fled to surrender but Smalls fought on, finally getting promoted to the official rank of Captain in the Navy.

Did some research on him and to parse the title. While he held the position of ship's captain and work with the Navy, he was actually a civilian and had not served in the Navy. His position in the Navy is more like the Merchant Marine or a civilian contractor.
