It may seem like damage to a painting is purely accidental and just part of the life of a given object. But the conspiracy of poor materials, neglectful care and downright bad past conservation shouldn't be dismissed as normal, rather they are arrows shot to the heart of the painting. Yet occasionally a painting just wont yield to that onslaught. That painting is The Resistor.

I would also love to see this! I often find myself wondering what other paintings Julian is working on during periods of “down time” with a painting. He talks about having to take breaks and come back to scraping or chipping off old varnish and such. It’d be awesome to see what’s going on during said breaks.

Not to sound creepy, but your voice for the voice over is very soothing. It is mellow without being monotone. It's one of the reasons I prefer to watch your videos over other conservators. Plus your explanation of the steps is thorough without being feeling scripted from one episode to the next. Thanks for sharing your processes with us!

I have been having trouble falling asleep recently, so I rewatch Julian's older videos on restless nights. It helps me calm down and sleep after a stressful day. It works so well I often have to split the video into 3 or more parts because I fall asleep so quickly. If Julian ever decides to voice an audiobook I will be the first in line to buy it 😄

The care with which Julian treats the artwork that comes into his studio has honestly inspired me to do the same with many different things in my own life, including taking care of myself. Sometimes when I'm tempted to be hasty or careless, or neglect something important, I think to myself, "Would a conservator do this with a painting?" If the answer is no, I have to step back and reconsider why I was tempted to act that way and take steps to resolve it. It's honestly a marvelous help for self-care. We only get one body, one life. We should take the same care with it that any conservator would take with a wonderful work of art.

I just like to ask myself, "is present you being kind to future you?" And sometimes you have to accept you didn’t have all the same modern tools to conserve yourself in the past and forgive yourself- you did do the best you could with what you had. 💛

I like to save these up over the weeks Julien takes to complete the project and then have the luxury of binge watching them all at the same time. It' extreme delayed gratification but so worth it. Wish I could do the same with chocolate, I'll have to buy that on the Julienfest day!

I always feel conflited when julian dose these many part series videos, on the one hand i absolutely love seeing a more indepth video of him restoring a beautiful work of art to its proper glory, but on the other hand when i see a multi part video i know that the painting we are about to see has really been through some troubles and its rather sad to see how poorly its been treated up until julian gets to restore it

Not really about the content of this video specifically, but watching this channel over the last couple months helped enhanced my visit to the Prado Museum in Madrid at the end of January. I've always appreciated art, but not much more than a "that looks nice" level. Watching Julian's work has helped me understand so much more of the technical aspects of fine art and I was able to view so many masterpieces with at least a slightly more critical eye.

What IS it that makes your videos addictive? The dedication to detail, the thoroughness, the ethics on display, the occasional very subtle sarcasm, the wit, the timbre of the voice - ? All of that and more - including one's investment in the emotions: the fervent wish that these often horribly damaged paintings can be saved even though you start to watch quite convinced that some of them are beyond human help - I love oil paintings, and probably that contributes to the fascination: but I bet many watch you who have no particular interest in painting.

Expect to sit back and wait 3-5 years then. Apprentices generally spend that long doing the drudge work before they are allowed anything at all like the responsibility of being given a whole painting to do entirely on their own. They need to learn so much beforehand.

That's like expecting the hygienist to take over for the dentist. They may be training but they do the jobs the expert doesn't want to--and once they're proficient enough in tasks they're no longer an apprentice and seek out their own position. Aka Kit wouldn't be an apprentice if she did a whole painting alone.

Awesome work. It seems that the "fly specs" actually are tiny cavities (or voids) in the paint. At 22:45 you can see that the cleaning liquid is filling up the voids, making a concave, shiny surface. The curved surface of a liquid in a small container is known as a meniscus.

I love your videos! They are the right balance between informative and relaxing. This video made me wonder if someone hired an antique furniture reupholstery person instead of an art restorer. I helped someone do that a couple times and those looked like the exact nails we used. Thinly applied rabbit skin glue can be used to stick down fabric. Roughly woven fabric is sometimes used as an under support. A too small frame reminds me of the bottom of a covered chair. They even use varnish or shellac a lot to cover the wood. Of course, I'm sure not-so-great art conservators prob do the same things. Thank you for giving this painting the time and attention this painting deserves.

Your work ethic is amazing-you let your audience know what should and shouldn’t be done because “That’s just not the way it’s done”. I love it when you talk directly to us by looking into the camera. What I love so much about Julian is his incredibly straightforward and clear cut way of approaching challenges. There is never anything on the desk/table that isn't needed for the next step to take. As an artist I've been messy my whole life but since I found Julian I also found the joy of being more tidy and deliberate. It improved the quality of my work and the quality of my state of mind. I find your restorations absolutely fascinating. It requires so much hand labor, but the end results show your skill with such beautiful end results.

Pieces of St Sebastian are always some of my favorite artworks, I legitimately got sooo excited just from your lovely lead-in to the subject of the piece before showing it. Wonderful to watch as always!
