Then getting a Switch and not being able to play Super Mario World so they download it from the Switch online shop (Which will also be dead in the future). Do you see the pattern here? There needs to be an online service like Steam that can preserve these games. People who bought Half-Life 2 on Steam can still play it on any modern computer through Steam 15 years later, meanwhile console store servers shut down, discs can rot or crack, and cartridges can wear down, corrode, and the chips can just stop functioning after years of use. I hate to sound...controversial, for lack of a better word, but I think that they should be lucky that they're getting any new DOOM games to begin with. After DOOM 3 decisively splitting the fandom back in 2004(I personally love the game myself), there possibly could've been a future where the series just straight up ENDED with the 3rd game. Imagine there was no mention of a DOOM 4. No DOOM(2016). No DOOM Eternal. Not even a re-release of DOOM 64. Sure, we have source ports and the modding community to fall back on, but then there will be a group of fans that want a new DOOM game, from the studio that MADE the game in the first place, regardless if their owned by Bethesda or not. I don't have a nostalgic past with the DOOM series. I never actually played the 1993 classic until I was 17. Despite being dated, both graphically and in some game design aspects, Classic DOOM was such a blast to play and still holds up well to this day. It convinced me to go and play the other games in the series. Had a total *blast* with DOOM(2016) when it initially dropped around the time of my high school graduation, and I whole-heartedly anticipate eventually playing DOOM Eternal. I haven't bought the game yet. I 'd much rather wait until ALL the DLC has been released, get it as a complete package I guess.

Emulation usually gets us better frame rate and a much better resolution. Retro elitists will say "that's not how it was meant to be played"... Yeah well I play a game for the sake of playing a game, not for the sake of playing a console for playing a game. Better performance is literally the way the game was originally supposed to function if the hardware of that time was as powerful as now. You can also look at source ports of old PC games and what their original developers play on. You don't see John Romero playing Doom on a floppy disk using MS-DOS and a command to boot the game up... I love how this is a 13 minute emulator rant. I was honestly expecting to hear about improper aspect ratios and stuff like that. For having been a part in the Twitch retro / speedrunning community (hereafter referenced as "the community") as a content creator for years now, most people just don't care how you play. They might have a preference for how they like to play but won't rip your asshole off for playing on an emulator. Also surprised you didn't bring up FPGA based systems and flashcarts. These are honestly how a good amount of the community play if they're on hardware (especially the speedrunning community). Higan is probably the best emulator example there is but sad you didn't touch on all the incredible work that has been put into making it what it is today. Tens of thousands of dollars have been spent on Higan. Most of this involving chemically decapping each chip on the system and then looking at it through an electron microscope. I'm a huge advocate of software preservation and have no problem saying I support piracy in this type of application. Loved the vid though! Sorry about the book of text! :D

I love the discussion of physical vs emulation. I am a video game enthusiast, I do own most of the older system from NES to PS4, and I have to say I see both sides of the argument. Nostalgia is definitely one the main reasons people collect the games they enjoyed when they were younger, but I have noticed in the past few years a lot of people of all ages jumping into it for monetary gain. I am a vendor at game swaps and can spot these people from a mile away....and these same people are generally the loudest objectors when it comes to emulation. Those of us who enjoy retro gaming do go out of our way to play on the original hardware, buying line doublers or modding our systems to play on modern tv's.. but I know the people within my circle of enthusiasts would never shame anyone for emulating....we just want more people to experience the classics. These "eletists" are either pissed the games they bought off ebay or trying to re sell will dip in price due to emulation....or they are losers who need to have a "one up" on the normies. It is in almost any collecting scene that involves nostalgia. Comic book eletists are the exact same, and since the Marvel movies became popular I see so many people that would have never considered buying a floppy off the shelf are now waxing intellectual on comics they had no idea existed before RDJ put on the Iron Man suit. These people will always exist, the best thing to do is ignore it. If other people's opinions effect your enjoyment of anything from games to toys..etc., you probably don't enjoy it as much as you let on. It has honestly become a fasion accesory for people that want to "fit in". I suffered years of shaming from friends and family for enjoying comics and video games before they became respected...but it didn't deter me from my passions. Who cares what someone else thinks? Play however you want to play as long as it still brings you enjoyment!

Same, I also have all the old systems. I only got the games I myself want to play. Emulators are convenient, but specifically for the nes, I have yet to find an emulator that always correctly emulates the colors. So physical systems do have their uses. The best argument for retrogaming without emulator currently is speedrunning. Some speedrun categories for some games ban emulators because of the inaccuracies in the game, and also because a game that runs better is much easier to play. As an example, Diddy Kong Racing bans emulators because the original consoles lag actually makes it much much slower than the emulator. But other than that, emulation is great.

Most of the retro games will be preserved on the internet making worthless getting the actual physical and absurdley priced game cartridge.
@SIPEROTH4 жыл бұрын
I think physical copies are also important because the same way old hardware can get destroyed so to digital copies can for one reason or another disappear from the internet. Is good to have both and what our friendly Indian guy here seems to be ignoring is that many are making physical ways of preservation as well. Remaking cartridges of old games and using FPGA hardware that operates as a clone hardware to the original hardware while offering HDMI and HD etc. So yeah both physical and digital are progressing in ways to keep those game alive. Even if the original NES consoles started dying we have brand new NES FPGA systems that play the games from the cartridge without emulating, exactly like the original NES. So physical have ways of preserving physically the games as well, not just digitally.
@mitpoker73194 жыл бұрын
@@SIPEROTH The problem with that is that hdmi to HD is not the same as actually going into the game's exe binary and change the resolution and optimize the game for an HD or 4k experience. Those fgpa nes clones are a nice gimmick, I'll give you that. But unless you're playing on an old crt, it will pretty much look cr@ppy on any modern display. Why? Because the original roms are meant to play on outdated hardware. Were talking about games that were a thing in the 1980s. Much of that magic is already gone, and no fgpa clone can bring that back. Unless you still have a good crt, of course. The only way to preserve any retro game is if the actual developer preserves the actual source code. Working from source code is only true way that you can adapt any game to modern hardware, regardless of the age of the game. You just need competent programmers and the original owner of the game's rights to actually care about releasing a good port.
@mitpoker73194 жыл бұрын
@Deathtrooper40 I have. But the ones in most decent condition have unfair prices on ebay. I personally recommend that you search local thrift store. They won't charge you an arm and a leg. But it can be a hit or miss. But don't worry, replacement parts for these consoles are very cheap. The repairing for these old consoles is very easy due to their rudimentary technology. Even soldering jobs are way easier on these old consoles than it is on, let's say, a Ps1. That or you can buy the Famicom version of the Nes. It's actually cheaper on ebay than the north American Nes.
@vstev34724 жыл бұрын
@@mitpoker7319 "the actual developers preserve the source code" There's the problem. We need to preserve it digitally and physically because, from my personal experience as a junior developer (also my friends and my professor's) , when something (source code) is unused (in my case if its more than a year. In my professor's case, 5 years), we permanently delete it and more often than not we dont backup it (unless its in public repository. But then again, if its something you sell, it won't be in public repository)
@mitpoker73194 жыл бұрын
@@vstev3472 That's crazy. But very true. The problem with just preserving these games digitally and physically is that these versions are compiled versions of the game. And I ask myself, how would a dev plan to port these games into newer platforms without the actual source code? Let's take a Ps2 game, for example. Ps2 games run on Mips assembly, right? And you want to port the game to PC. But you lost the source code. Do you just go about and reverse engineer mips code? Or do you just decompile the whole game part by part with "X" decompiler?

I collect retro games because I like to have the physical medium. It’s like curating a library, where I can go pick up a piece of history off of my shelf and play it, and look at the artwork on the box and read the manuals. There’s a lot of nostalgia to this experience. However, I very much care about the historical archiving of video games so I am all for emulating everything possible. The physical medium will deteriorate and we can’t lose these things to time. I have an emulation arcade cab that I made just so I can relive the arcade experience without having to own huge expensive machines and boards. Emulating benefits everyone, and people shouldn’t have to pay crazy prices and have a ton of space to enjoy all the great games throughout history. We’re opening doors to online netplay through emulators on games that were never playable online. We’re able to analyze games to find new speedrunning glitches and create mods to relive them in different ways many years later. Emulation contains the spirit of gaming. The only people I can think who would be against emulating are scummy resellers and boomers.

I've spent thousands on retro hardware and hundreds of afternoons refurbishing and fixing broken machines, but when it comes to playing retro games I usually just emulate them because it's a freaking pain in the ass to setup a console or vintage computer every time you want to have a quick go on an old game. Of course it's cool to use real hardware and I do that occasionally but emulation is just fine apart from things like light gun games etc. which really don't work that well. I don't bother with collecting the games themselves though as that will quickly get expensive and almost every system has a way to load games off an SD card somehow and I do that for most machines. Honestly as an engineer the troubleshooting and fixing is the most fun part of the whole hobby and I love it when I can save an old machine from being thrown out and give it a new life. I just appreciate having the hardware more than actually using them which might sound stupid but that's what I do, it's like people buying vintage pottery or anything else, you don't buy a classic car to use as a daily driver

I love the retro community though when it comes to repairing stuff and reviewing stuff. Haven't met an "elite" though. Just passionate people. Angry Videogame Nerd, Metal Jesus, and in retro tech 8-Bit guy just to mention some.

BlackCroft666LP That’s because they are prevalent and non-controversial enough that their content is watchable, there are probably a lot of elitists out there that you haven’t seen that don’t live on KZfaq.

@Diego Otero He's not part of the problem. The problem is elitist douchebags who insist you have to use upscalers and mods for retro gaming. Merely highlighting the options that are out there is not a problem. The people who want to use them can buy them, and the people who don't want to use them don't have to. Highlighting games that people have never heard of is not a problem. Sure, they might spike in price, but if you don't care about owning an original copy, you can just emulate or buy a cheap reproduction. As for the original copies, yeah they spiked in price, but if he hadn't highlighted the game, you'd never know it exists in the first place, so what does the previous lower price matter? You weren't going to buy it because you didn't know about it. If anything, _you're_ part of the problem. You're being an elitist douchebag on the opposite side of the coin. Crying about people using framemeisters, RGB mods, and original cartridges/discs is just as shitty as crying about people using emulators.

I started a Super Nintendo collection when I was 15, i’m 18 now, and I have a lot of Retro Gaming horror stories. (Which also serve as reasons to why I stopped) Some of which i’d like to share. •Final Fantasy VI (3) I went through the game twice, each time I got about a third of the way through before I got on to play one day, and all my save data was gone. That’s when I learned you can’t bump game cartridges, or else your save data is gone. (You also can’t leave your games stagnant for too long, especially if they’re rpgs, and they run on batteries that die super easy. I can say the same about all the other SNES rpgs i’ve owned and played. •Chrono Trigger •Secret of Mana •Illusion of Gaia •Mario Rpg •Earthbound (So far this one is okay, but I haven’t played it in a bit. Now i’m worried it’s gone. Ugh) It’s fucking aggravating to be worrying about wether your save data is going to die every time you get on to play) •Things that also can make you lose data -Bumping the console -Extreme Temperature Changes -Blowing in the cartridge (Don’t fucking do this with top loading systems, it’s a top loading system. The chips don’t get bent/get dust as easily so there’s no need to do that.) •Touching the chips •The Space/Setup Sometimes you’ll spend more on your setup than actually playing games. It’s ridiculous. Cartridges are also bulky, and take up a lot of space. •The Money you’ll spend This is the most common thing you’ll run into online when researching this. It all depends on what you’re willing to buy/how far you’re going to go. I don’t even wanna talk about how much money i’ve spent, because it’s an amount that i’m ashamed of. *However* There are a lot of joys in the gaming community, and the people you’ll meet while collecting are awesome (mostly) I’ve talked to a lot of people, and they’ve made my experience better in the community than the games. So, take everything you hear about the community with a boulder of salt. It’s not all bad.

Had my entire ps2 memory card full of rpgs just erase itself once. One thing I've been having issues with is keeping hardware working. Had to use electrical tape on my Saturn because the disc sensor broke My Sega cd model 2 is now resting itself and the TurboGrafx controller I had died. This has all been in the last few months. Retro gaming on of hardware is fun but these old consoles don't have long.

toonamivhs 2 0 Absolutely! Especially when you’re playing on a console (like the TG16) where the games are really uncommon.

Because I got into emulation back in the late 90's, I was able to find out about all the Final Fantasy games I missed out on. I remember playing Final Fantasy V when it was only 80% translated and way before it was finally released on PS1, etc. The real Final Fantasy III for NES was an awesome game too I was able to play on NESticle.

All or_Nothing That was my mistake not knowing those 2 times. I play emulators nowadays.

@Gryffin DarkBreed I was gonna say, as long as it has a battery you won't need to worry about never saving again, you might lose the save but at least it ain't super mario 64 where once the flash memory is dead forget about it.

"Someday, every PS3 is going to die"... yeah, but you forget that older hardware rarely ever failed even during it's life-span. Most modern electronics are built more to have a short-life span, while older hardware was built to last. For one, the designs were simpler, which makes them more bulletproof. They are also easier to work on. The most common thing to fail is capacitors and those can be fix on many old machines. But that being said, the older the machine, the better the emulation tends to be on it. I have absolutely no problem with emulation. Original hardware seems to be more of an issue with speed runners, since emulation isn't allowed with speed runners. Only original hardware and original copies of the games. Maybe the sales people might have something to do with this, but I think it's more fueled by the speed running community. I guess because original hardware is the only way to keep things fair, so, I guess that sort of makes sense. I really don't care for speed running, so, I use emulators where appropriate. I only seek original hardware when games I want to play dont run right. I mostly care about the N64 because that's a system I have a close connection with, but I'm perfectly fine emulating gamecube games on my Wii U using Nintendont (even though Nintendont is more like patching the game to run in Wii mode than actually emulating.)
@chrismdb56862 жыл бұрын
I know this is late, but emulators are both allowed and used in speed running. There's simply separate categories for emu and console running.

retro elitist logic:play goldeneye in a shit resolution, with a shit control scheme and in a barely playable framerate is better than playing in 4k, 60 fps mod, widescreen support and mouse and keyboard

Good video, Muta. I enjoy the shit out of playing on the original hardware and games, but that's more for a collection standpoint. If you want to emulate? I say go for it. Enjoy the games!

I really can't stand some inaccuracies sometimes, but I come to expect it, I really love consoles and emulators, I find it really cool that people reverse engineer this stuff, allowing others to play all their games in one place; even having better graphics, framerates, and whatnot far superior to the game running on real hardware in some cases. It makes me really excited for the future of emulators and the power we have at our disposal to fully optimize and flesh out some of these emulators.
