This year I covered the story of ZilianOP, a streamer who was banned on twitch for allegedly faking a disability. It's a story as old as twitch itself. But is it entirely true? Recently Zilian returned with proof that challenges the narrative.

But he isn’t taking any accountability he tipped the camera down after he realized that the stream was on and also he never showed himself standing to the viewers so he can look more disabled then he actually is and gain sympathy. Also he tried to cover it up in chat logs after saying he tripped trying to cover up that he’s is not fully disabled. He is still a douche and shouldn’t be allowed to have sympathy again for his actions.

I'm legitimately registered disabled, and I've got absolute proof of this (MRI results, bloodwork results etc). I cannot walk far or for long, and I require to be sat most of the day. I use walking aids when out and about, but yes, at home, I can briefly walk from room to room. Being disabled is NOT black and white, you don't have to been in a wheelchair 24/7 to be disabled. EDIT: My disease for any curious is called Ankylosing Spondylitis. It's an auto-immune disease that the TL;DR simplified version of this is, my bones turn to dust, and joints turn to bone. It's excruciatingly painful, very mentally and physically draining, and every day is a battle.

I had a female english teacher who was in a wheelchair. I saw her, she could stand up and one of my classmate saw her that she stand up too. It did not look like that she tried to his disablity. She told us that she could stand up but it os hard for her to walk and stand up. It happened to me sometines when I was sick. I could barely walk. I walked too slow compare to my avrage walking speed. If i walk a distance in 10 minutes, it took me 40 minutes. I can walk but sometimes, I got too sick that I can not walk fast like I used too. The sad part is that it is not common knowledge that needing a wheelchair does not mean the person can't walk. Many just can't walk all day, it is an aid. I was surprised too when someone I have spend the whole evening with suddenly got up out of his wheelchair for a few minutes, but then I understood.

I feel for Zillian on this so much. I was in an equestrian accident when I was 14, and for quite some time I was left in a wheelchair. I had made friends who had never seen me walk before, and assumed that I was a paraplegic. About 20 months after the incident, I was finally able to walk, albeit with a walker. Some of those friends were incredibly mad at me, because of THEIR idea that I was permanently wheelchair bound. Most of them didn't talk to me for weeks, and some I haven't talked to since.

This is a big problem many people with invisible disabilities, including myself, face. There's this weird rule that unless you "look" disabled, you aren't actually disabled, and it's even a massive problem within the disability community itself. I have a mental disability, but besides that, I look completely normal, and on the surface, I act normal too. I think this is to date one of the best examples of this invisible disability discrimination., where even someone who's in a wheelchair is torn to shreds because he doesn't look or fully "act" disabled.

I'm disabled and used a power wheelchair for years. I could always walk. It's honestly creepy and so entitled and just... disgustingly familiar to me as a disabled person... that people are demanding this guy's medical history, and that if a person in a wheelchair user doesn't say, "By the way, i'm not paralyzed, I use a wheelchair for a different reason" they're being dishonest. This is just like the picture of a wheelchair user standing in a liquor store labeled, "It's a miracle!" It's just showing the shitty ableism and ignorance in the world. All the stuff related to the disability that this dude supposedly did wrong were lies (begging for money, saying he was paralyzed), and the things he "didn't deal with well" are honestly the watchers' and followers' fault for making assumptions. Stop assuming disabled people's medical history is your business. I get asked really freaking personal, inappropriate questions all the time in person. Also this is why wheelchair users like myself are terrified of standing up in public even if it'd make our lives so much easier.

Same here! Some things just aren't people's business, we don't owe people our entire lives on a silver platter just because we're disabled. I use crutches or a cane to walk more than just a short distance, and have had situations where I've had people accuse me of faking my disability because I'm physically able to walk a short ways/stand unsupported for a short time, but those were all quite small scale or irl, so not worth discussing in an online context. @@nithor8764 I don't condone his lies after the incident. If he didn't want to talk about it, he should have just told people it was none of their business. I expect that those were told in a panic, and they certainly came back to bite him. I'm not saying everything he's done is above board. There are things I don't feel qualified to speak on, like the twitch lag and whether the gf was reacting or didn't see and it was just a coincidence. People can be mad how he handled it, they can say he's been shady about accounts, that things don't add up, and so on. But everyone is saying that the thing he did wrong is not tell people he could walk, as soon as he could. That he was scamming all along for not revealing this. That he needed to share his medical progress publicly and that's the only way he wouldn't be a scammer. Those are the sentiments that are skeevy, demanding that of someone is the utterly disgusting Karen-level entitled behavior. Not sharing private information is not scamming. You are not entitled to anyone's medical information. No one is obligated to perform their ability or disability on camera if they don't want to. If someone can walk and doesn't want to show people that, that's their right, they're not obligated to inform you. They're not obligated to answer questions like "How much can you walk?" "What's your prognosis?" If observers make assumptions that someone in a wheelchair can't walk because they have never seen it happen, that's on them. Edited for some autocorrect weirdness, hopefully I caught it all now.

In the end, don't care what the final verdict is of what happened after he was "caught". What I care about is everyone's shitty entitled attitudes about his medical information and lines like "this could have been avoided if he had been more open from the beginning". The fact that he's accused of a fundraising scam which evidence in this video and some others points to as not true, he didn't start it and there's no evidence he didn't need equipment at that time. That kind of false accusation hurts so many people who can walk but need a wheelchair, because wheelchairs are freaking expensive and often insurance won't cover them unless you fit a very very narrow criteria. Gofundmes are rampant for wheelchairs because of this very reason. Just because a person can walk doesn't mean they don't need mobility equipment, and this is held up as a major part of the scam when he didn't start it. Even if he did, there's no evidence he didn't need it. And the implication that the only reason anyone watched him or tipped him was his disability is super skeevy. If that's true, those viewers are gross and voyeuristic and using a person as inspiration porn and treating him as one dimensional. But all the evidence I've seen, archives and so on, disability was not the focus of his streams, it was incidental to his content.

Like most things in life, the truth probably lies somewhere in the middle. He definitely suffered a crippling injury and needs/needed a wheelchair to move around. It is great that he went through physical therapy and got better over time. But it is also plausible that he felt he couldn't give off the perception that he was getting better due to the following he garnered being the (in his own words) "wheel chair streamer". It is hard to believe that he could have a close romantic relationship out in the public light over stream but wasn't comfortable enough sharing his recovery progress. His biggest downfall, as he said, was his lack of transparency and unfortunately public perception took over and snowballed over him (ala cancel culture). In situations like these, no one really wins.

ZilianOP once came into my chat when I was a small streamer on Hitbox just because someone said I looked like him and I said "I hope not". THAT was apparently talking trash and he showed up right away. This was 2014, I believe. Maybe 2015. I could probably dig through my archive and figure it out. I'm disabled and at the time I was below the poverty line and in the process of moving out because we couldn't afford our house anymore. Because he showed up I told him that I resent that he got away with pretending to be disabled for money when I'm actually disabled and suffering financial hardship. His defense was "I didn't do anything wrong" and "I didn't steal anything, they gave me the money". He then told his viewers on his stream to mass report me. I have no idea for what, other than that he didn't like me. Hitbox staff told me "Don't worry about it". I don't think they took his reports seriously. I haven't watched the video yet, but I look forward to updating my comment with what I think of him after this. If it turns out he actually wasn't faking it, then I'll apologise to him. EDIT I've watched it now. I already knew he was in a car accident and the wheelchair was legit but I believed that he mislead people into believing that he was fully wheelchair bound. And yeah, looks like that was right. He didn't directly say he was but he fully knew people in his audience believed that and he didn't correct them. He let them spread a lie that benefit him when he could have just corrected it. That's fucked up. That and the fact that instead of trying to explain to me anything about his situation, he just tried to mass report me to strip away one of my only income sources after I had already told him about my own financial and health situation? Yeah, I'm not apologising. He seems like a friendly enough guy and I hope that he's living a good life. I just can't excuse what he tried to do to me when I was already at my lowest point in my life. The man was told directly by me that I am disabled and was losing my house due to not being able to afford it, and he tried to get me banned on Hitbox the same day. It was one of my only income sources. I wasn't big on KZfaq yet, not big enough to make serious money at least. If his reports worked, I don't know what would have happened to me. It was wrong of him to do and it was well after the Wheelchair incident. He caused pain for me and my family that day on a pretty deep level for us. I just can't forgive that just because he can get in an interview and say he messed up.

People always assumed that they knew what was going on, but for people who weren’t part of my every day inner circle it was probably a shock the first time they saw me up and walking after a year of using a cart and wheelchair. Some people may not have seen me during the six months when I was using a walker, so it was surely even more of a shock to those people.

The thing is with ignorant people (both able bodied and disabled) is that they typically imagine a disabled person in a wheelchair and unable to stand but a lot of the time, wheelchair users can stand and walk around but they need the wheelchair for more long term moving. That is a huge thing with other mobility aids too. I used a cane on and for a bit and people would stare and very rarely, they would ask me if I was okay. Usually they’d ask someone else. But when people saw me without it, they’d think I was faking my disability. Honestly, people should try to educate themselves and others on the fact that disabled people have different needs depending on who they are, however, people don’t like to listen and they choose to be ignorant.

While I agree with you partially, it also seems perfectly plausible that he wouldn’t have known what the prognosis was early on when he first started streaming. But yeah, once it became clear that his prognosis was good and he gained some ability to walk he should have communicated it. It is also plausible that it was an intentional omission and imo a lie of omission is still a lie. Overall what conclusion someone draws about this depends on what they think his motivations were for his decisions at that time, but the “faked his disability outright” claim is at least probably false

I had been hit by a car the year before and bounced back pretty quickly jumping right back into playing sports, skating and BMXing. Because of how young I was and the fact It was pain in my legs I was misdiagnosed several times or accused of trying to get drugs. It wasnt until I was almost 18 that doctors finally figured out I had spinal stenosis and several herniated disks that were constantly pinching the nerves in my legs. Finally I was able to get proper treatment and was able to recover to the point that the pain was manageable.

After watching the video, and reading the comments from people who are disabled... Maybe we should just... Stop. The people who got mad, had a savior complex of some kind. They were trying to protect the disabled community from someone they saw as a grifter, and a threat. Maybe the disabled community should be allowed to care for themselves, so we don't do more harm than good. If someone is faking something like that, then they would be the best folks to go to to find out the truth, since they live it, and everyone else only has their assumptions. I also find it deeply troubling that so many people have an expectation to private, and/or personal information. They feel it's owed to them. It's not. Not even a little bit. The only expectation someone should have online is either to be entertained, or offended. Not someone's entire life story, or their medical history. Shoot, not even the truth, people lie online all the time, about _everything._ So we have to pick and choose what we believe. Entertained, or offended.

@@nithor8764 You are so misinformed and yet seem so confident that you are correct it’s appalling. You clearly didn’t watch the video and have little to no experience with rehab. First things first when it came to him walking when he thought the stream was off, that is absolutely true and he admitted that. We were at a time where the internet was still seen as a super dangerous place where little to no personal info should be shared whatsoever so reasonably in his situation he didn’t want people to know his life situation. Should he have dealt with the aftermath differently yes of course but when someone sees you as this one thing it can be scary to come out and say any progress you had. Secondly the dog thing is very explained and reasonable. Falling after learning how to walk again is very common and your lack of experience in the situation is clearly shown here. Instead of knowing that you lack knowledge in an area you instead act as if you know what you’re talking about which is very common with ignorant people. The dog had disturbed the stream earlier with the cords and he was still yelling at the dog to stop. It is very dog like to go back and do the same bad habits if not punished for it so that’s more than reasonable. He admitted that turning down the camera was out of fear and stupidity since he didn’t know what him standing up would do and he was super panicked about the whole thing. Instead of making the right choice in a high stress situation he made the wrong one which is very common as most people do things like that in high stress situations and will later reflect on what happened and understand what they did was wrong, meaning they made the wrong choice. The last thing is truly what makes me think you have no clue what you’re talking about. Stream delay is a thing and the timing being perfect is a coincidence considering unless the girlfriend was actually in the room there is actually no way possible she would have been able to time that. Even if she was able to see what was going on in real time the timing was too perfect and she wouldn’t have been able to come up with a story like that on the spot. That’s not how shock works. @@hempwick8203 Literally dying and not being able to walk are two ENTIRELY different things. Please don't equate them like that. Being paralyzed is just something people live with and is a thing a lot of disabled people are self conscious about, or just aren't comfortable being open with. Having cancer is literally dying and is virtually impossible to hide on camera if you're going through chemo. Yes, he did play into the wheelchair. But saying he was being malicious and using it to that extent is ridiculous. I know someone who *is* paralyzed and also has cancer. Literally never brings it up and honestly forget she has it sometimes. There are plenty of people who are in wheelchairs that walk around for a few seconds then sit back down. It's very common, people just aren't used to it. He never really had a reason to get up, so why would he?

Okay now listen to this: I agree that he probably had a disability, yes. - But he still lied, because partial lies, are still lies. Imagine this: You stand up, because you can, you can't walk far. Thats fine, i don't care, i'm even happy you can, but putting down the camera later and claiming you "fell out of the wheelchair" is a lie. A Partial lie, maybe, but a lie. If he got better, and was able to walk again for short whiles, why not tell it in that situation? He used the little knowledge what specificly was his disability and his state to collect money. - He needed a new Wheelchair, thats totally cool, he never got it for the money, thats not as cool. - So yeah, he was disabled, but my Problem with all this is: He USED it for his benefit, not telling people he got better, even lying about it. And i don't know if you do or do not agree, but i don't like that sentiment. - If someone was getting better, i would still watch them and help them out as i could, but i kinda feel cheated, if people say "I can't stand up" - Stand up and say "I fell" to later say "Well i slowly got better with the time" - Why not say it IN THAT moment? Why the Camera Turn down? Because he saw it as a benefit in that moment. I do believe him that he was disabled, but he communicated his disability different than it was.

About a year late and I’m reading through the comments and noticed something interesting, how many people with disabilities are speaking up and sharing that not only do they believe him but his story mimics their real world experiences. It also feels like (based on what I’ve seen of his streams and heard from people that actually were in the streams) like he wasn’t begging for donations or pretending to be paralyzed like he’s been accused of. I honestly get why he wouldn’t give a play by play on his recovery especially knowing the dirty looks and comments disabled people get if they do anything mildly able bodied. I know because I’ve seen it happen first hand to a close family member. The hate feels like it’s coming from a very ablest perspective.

@@unique_mushroom This is my take from it as well. He didn't set out to defraud people, he just found himself in a situation where he was getting more attention and donations because people assumed the worst. He had a lack of good judgement, and failed to correct those assumptions, committing a lie by omission. Furthermore, he's not the demon the press made him out to be, but he's also not innocent either. Does he deserve a second chance? I'd say so. But forevermore, ANYTHING he does is going to be looked at with a critical eye. Any falsehoods or lies he tells could reinforce that image the press gave him, and lead to his downfall. Essentially, Zilian will need to walk on the softest of eggshells for the rest of his online career. It's not a situation I'd want to be in, but at the same time I don't feel much sympathy for him as I feel he did this to himself with that initial lie of omission.

I knew a guy at school who could walk, but couldn't for long. He had cerebral palsy, and couldn't do gym for long, and when we had a trip to a golf driving range for school one time, since it was relatively close to the school we walked as a class. I offered to push his wheelchair since he couldn't walk the whole way, and not only the other class, but our own class were making rude comments like "Why does he get to chill while we walk" (On a 15 minute walk in grade 7, where every single person other than him was able bodied, and no one was overweight enough to have ACTUAL difficulty walking 15 minutes), and me and him just had our own conversation with the other two people in our class who understood his condition louder than any of the complaints. It just goes to show, a lot of people seriously do not understand that wheelchairs are not ONLY used for people who literally cannot walk for the rest of their lives.

Bull...there is NO WAY he could get out of that chair so fluid if he "needed' to use a chair to stream. He may NOT have created a disability to get sympathy. BUT I was in a wheelchair for 6 months and couldn't get out a wheelchair like that when I still needed it. IF he was in physical therapy they would have NOT wanted him in the wheelchair at all if he could get up- they insisted that I use a walker for around the house when I was strong enough to stand after getting pins in my ankle. If he had progressed in physical therapy like he said and could walk around the house- then why use the wheelchair in front of the cameras and why would he NOT said he fell? How did he get up? I fell twice getting dressed for work while in a wheelchair and had to wait until someone found me to help me up because my legs couldn't support me getting up from the floor which is WHY I needed the wheelchair.

I think worst case scenario based on evidence: he started streaming in a wheelchair without any intention of misleading people. People misled themselves, and he allowed this to continue because it was beneficial to him. Even if this is the case, that is a very different sort of disception to what the been alleged. He should be given his stream back and people should be allowed to make their own minds up on whether they support him or no. Just to clarify: not saying that was the case, just that it's the most cynical, yet reasonable given the evidence, take.

i know nothing about you but having had a bad injury and intensive knee surgery, i wanna say its good to see someone recover from an injury like yours and im sorry people are quick to see your communication mistakes with your subs as inherently deceptive. theres a lot of shame that goes into having your body be radically changed by an accident, in my case i didnt walk for about 6 months but with a year or so of PT i could walk and fully run again, and its a surreal thing to see your body go through atrophy and regrowth in real time. i know i tended to be very private about my situation until i could walk and i still use a cane at times because of chronic pain and other issues, and people absolutely love to say i dont need it. i respect that you own up and apologize for not being fully honest or transparent, but i really want to let you know that there are people familiar with your kind of recovery situation or more importantly the isolation that can happen when you experience accidents that damage your body severely. its not so hard to understand why you wouldnt respond immediately and have mixed feelings/reactions about everything through the years. rats off to you

I’m late to the video but I instantly believed him. I’m disabled and sometimes use mobility aids. Due to the nature of fibromyalgia and how it effects me my pain levels are always fluctuating. Some days I have some aches and pains but it’s manageable. I can walk and even skate. Sometimes I wake up and I’m in so much pain I can’t think about anything other than it for hours and sit all day. On bad days I need a walker if I leave my house at all and sometimes in my house. But I also use my walker to walk longer. I can walk one hour without it before I’m in crazy pain or three hours with it. When I’ve made content in the past I haven’t mentioned a ton. I worried that people would hear me talking about not walking well that day and being tired just sitting up straight and then have people mad when I posted on Twitter about skating or going to a concert because they didn’t get all the context. I didn’t want to be hate raised and follow botted because I improved from the month before. It’s completely believable that somebody was in a wheelchair and didn’t want to share personal information. The difference is that I keep it because I know off the potential of things like this happening to me. And I know that showing Instagram story archives of me at theme parks sitting in my walker and showing medical history as soon as anything happened would clear me. It’s a shame he was treated so badly over jt all.

So, paraplegic here. I've been scooter-bound (I can stand, but cannot walk) for about a year and a half following a car accident, botched back surgery and diagnosis with a rare disease of the spine called Transverse Myelitis. I have been trying to get back to walking ever since. I was 100% paralyzed, and I am now at about 80%. Now with the caveat that no two spinal injuries are exactly the same, I have spent enough time in physical therapy to recognize what it looks like when people are learning to walk. I spend a lot of time looking at other able-bodied people and how they move, thinking, "I will never be able to move the way they can again. My movements will never be as fluid and effortless. I will always look slow and clunky. My balance will always be off." Frankly, no one who was paralyzed even recently stands up the way he did. Not that fast. And NEVER without holding on to something. Your balance is shot and your core muscles are wonky. And I have a feeling that if he had fallen we would have heard it. Amazing how he managed to hurt himself ramming into the desk and the camera never even jiggled. I think him saying that it was a total coincidental troll by Hypnotical before The Miracle is rather convenient. He was very aware that he was getting at least a large share of his donations because he was handicapped. I can easily imagine myself in his position, and my instinct would be to overshare about my progress because of that exact fact. You don't get to "be private" about your disability when you are getting donations related to it, sorry not sorry. I mean, he tilted the camera down. The fact that THAT was his instinct in that moment is all you need to know. He felt shame, because he WAS ashamed. He was ripping people off and he was actively avoiding mentioning any progress because he wanted to keep the money coming. As far as the Craigslist ad, you can't list wheelchairs on there. It's banned because they don't want people STEALING them and selling them. I know this, because I bought one that didn't work for me and tried to sell it and wasn't able to find a way. I'd LOVE to see those medical records.
