I love the fact that a non-Jew is introducing me, an Orthodox Jew, to Jewish songs I've never heard before. Thanks for this one, it's a ton of fun.

Revivo's Project are AWESOME! Many of their songs are medleys of 6 different songs, covers of old mizrachi singers, but not just, and many of their video clips are filmed in that "Hafla" style - that social gathering of men having a good time together. They always said in interviews that their goal is to make people happy, I think they're doing that just great. So happy you reacted to them.

what is so awesome is your natural curiosity , curiosity of other people's culture and music, and this curiosity is born not out of a desire to ridicule/rebuke, but rather with an open heart seeking to learn and accept and even love... what a rarity in today's world! (especially towards the Jewish people). your openness and humanity and sweet humor are awesome, an inspiration to us all!!!

These are artists from a Yeminite Jewish/Israeli background and their songs are usually for a different audience than the hassidic songs you are used to reviewing. This band is famous for 're-imagining' songs that were popular in the 70s, 80, and early 90s and modernizing them for today's audience. That's why you'll likely see an audience base of mostly mizrahi jews along different age brackets. This band is very popular in Israel although not on the same level (IMO) as Omer Adam, Ishay Ribo, and some of the others you reviewed.

They chew 'gat'. Gat (scientific name: Catha edulis) is a plant from the Clastaceae family that is used for chewing, partly to extract the active substances in the leaves, cathine and cathinone, which affect the mood. In Israel the plant is often called Gat. Yemeni men usually chew it.

It's sold all over in Israel, alot of juice shops have it as an option, but I believe it's not legal in the US. (Don't know about Canada).

I love it when you take my recommendations!!! 😁 Thank you! :) This video is aways hilarious to watch for me. With all the smoking into the camera and the dancing lol mega cringe Anyway, yeah, they're Mizrahi and they are not religious like the Hasidic group you had watched, but I'm glad you were able to see how they resemble each other to my eyes 😂 They WERE chewing the leaves. If I'm not mistaken these are called Gat leaves. I think it's a Yemeni custom. The Ravivo project is in fact a trio. There are the 2 Ravivo brothers (Nir and Raviv Ben-Menachem) and their friend Eliran Tzur. Raviv is the one who spoke at the beginning, introducing themselves and hyping everybody up. He doesn't really sing, he is more of a producer I guess, like the conductor or manager of the group. It's his project and it's called after his nickname Ravivo:) Eliran was the one you liked with the white shirt, and Nir is the one with the black shirt (which is my personal favorite ;)). They're the singers. All the people around are guests/friends/other artists who were invited to the gathering. In Arabic (and Hebrew) we call it a "Hafla". A gathering of friends , with music and dancing, maybe also drinking and smoking(probably, but it depends on the people). Largely, it's just a good time. The Ravivo project came out about 10 years ago with several medleys of old songs "the parents" - and even grandparents- grew up on, and gave them a new, fresh production and performence. They got VERY famous after that. The beauty in it was how it brought different generations together, which was a big part of their agenda making these. The Nostalgia feeling for the elders, combined with great new interpretations for really good songs the youngsters liked. It's like a very well done honoring homage for the good old music. I get very emotional thinking about the change they had made in music in such a fun, positive way. I love them very much. And my Mom is like their biggest fan on planet earth lol, so we are the living proof of that I guess haha. You mentioned the beauty of seeing people of different generations singing together. I always also notice how some of them seen to be more religious than others (supposedly). It isn't always like that, being religious doesn't always allow you to be able to enjoy the same things as a secular Jewish person. It's complicated with all the customs, I'm sure it's not to hard to imagine. So I think it's beautiful, this mish-mash of religious and non religious people, getting together to enjoy common nostalgic music. It's magic. Been to concerts of theirs twice, and both times are my best experiences of live performances I think. Or at least at the top 5. They're incredible. Would love to see some more reactions to them in the channel if you would like to, considering your positive reaction, I think you liked it! 😄

Leaves are called gat, traditionally chewed by many Middle Eastern
@menibig
@menibig Жыл бұрын
This thing we just experienced called Mizrahit music, as you said, which is oriental Israeli music. Not everyone’s favorite here… The leaves they are chewing is very common in the Jewish-Yemeni community, and is called Gat (Khat in English) which is making them strong if you know what I mean 😅

The traditional mizrachi religious way is way way more relaxed and moderate ( although these days you also have mizrachi haredi way of worshipping) also the history of the mizrachi Jews was still difficult but less so of the ashkenazi Jews so their ways are less strict and serious ...there is a lot more outward joy and upbeat attitude in all things:))) in every aspect of life including music. Today thank g-d in Israel people are blending together so the majority of people are mixed and enjoy the beauty of all the worlds:)) the only groups that remain mostly one origion are the haredi communities. They are either ashkenazi or mizrachi..the rest of Israel including all the different kinds of religious and non religious people are mostly mixed. I loveeee that about Israel. Its a party:)))) you get to enjoy everything from all our histories and all parts of the world now that we are finally back in our home.

The concept you are describing of men gathering together singing, eating, laughing, schmoozing for no specific occasion has a name. it's called "Kumzitz"
@temimacohen1
@temimacohen1 Жыл бұрын
Kumzitz is for Ashkenazis, hence the Yiddish, kum zitz, come sit. The Mizrachi/Arabic term is Chafla.

I've got a song I think you would really enjoy hearing. It's a cover of a beloved, classic English song written by Abie Rotenberg (like "The Man from Vilna") sung by Levy Falkowitz and the Yedidim choir. Here's the link: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/iZNjoNWDubW7mmg.html Note: While the song is mostly in English, there's a couple words you'll need to know to understand the song. One is "Neshomel'e" (the title of the song), which is the Yiddish diminutive form of Hebrew "Neshama," soul. The other is malach'l, the Yiddish diminutive form of Hebrew "Malach," angel.

If I'm right and the leaves are Khat, they are a mood enhancer and would probably contribute to the overall feelings of well being and camaraderie. It's used primarily in Arabic and African circles. You used to be able to get it in Ontario in those little mom and pop stores, I don't know the current status of it's legality but I think I remember the government under Dalton McGuinty or Kathleen Wynne's mandates stepping in and putting an end to it's legal availability, Khat's fairly harmless and they got their panties into a twist over nothing in my opinion.

@portugesepai the stuff in their mouths is Qat, it is common in Yemen. Kinda gives people little bit of an edge-ish lol. A lot of Israelis adopted it from the Yemenite Jews when they migrated :)

There is a Sitar sound in the music, but it's not being played. Or at least, I don't see it. Maybe there's a guitar setting for this or something.
