Sarthak I would like to note that there is a reservation for disabled people in India for college admissions. Also, the students from weak economical conditions can apply for college fee waviers. But I guess most of us are not able to see the reservation beyond college admissions, because for upper caste people it’s the only time when they feel discriminated against. While for lower caste it’s much more significant than that in regular life as well. Also, I don’t think the US system of case to case basis will work in India. Indian society and universities are very much different culturally than the US.

Which they should, because all the PH seats are mostly filled by upper caste handicap students, again intersectionality is important. So you have people from same problem still doesn't get as much representation as an upper caste person. OBCs have creamy layer. One of the many reasons SC/ST don't have that is because even the reserved number of seats are left sometimes. Creamy layer is extremely dubious mark to measure. Many people are helped by their siblings and only people those have their income known are government employees mostly. Lower castes are mostly earning through govt Jobs, they don't have family owned businesses where they can hide their income, which I see almost all of my friends with EWS do. Rest of the things he mentioned like "family education" that again is subset of social inequality, that is based on caste. Two upper caste educated parents aren't equal to two educated lower castes. Sometimes I have even upper caste families with relatively less educational background has better awareness, access, and exposure to get their next generation better educated than the educated families of lower castes. The whole extended family and caste location matters. My father used to lecture these people often and tell them to focus on making up their generation stronger, and spend as much money on books, travel and amenities as possible. Using that privilege of having money and give their children some exposure to the outer world. But because of the caste background these people come from they aren't as good at these things despite having money. It's simple reservations based on caste because discrimination is based on caste. You will keep rotating the caste capital in your clan by practicing caste and caste based marriage. And that is why representation matters... One more thing Obama's daughter would certainly have more mental health issues if racial tensions increase in the country despite having all the privilege but a regular white guy wouldn't have to think about it. Even if he/she does, it wouldn't be same.

Sarthak clearly had good arguments. Disadvantages comes in many forms and you seems to only give importance/preferences to certain forms like caste and race. On the other hand what Sarthak was arguing for is that all possible disadvantages should be considered in equal footing and gauged based on that.

I come from an Indian village and whenever there's any conflict between UC and LCs (which is very common) everyone looks for "their people" in the system so that they can be treated a bit fairly. An officer's daughter like Tina dabi can represent and solve the concerns of SC community while a poor brahmin cannot! And a poor brahmin anyways gets free food electricity housing and also EWS reservation. There are also reservations fir disabled. So it's not as if poor from UCs dont get anything from the govt. Just google the schemes for poverty alleviation, they are more than double in number than SC/ST welfare schemes. IN A GROUP BASED CASTE BASED SOCIETY LIKE INDIA REPRESENTATION MATTERS. A RICH DALIT CAN REPRESENT A POOR DALIT BUT UNFORTUNATELY A POOR UC CANNOT REPRESENT A POOR DALIT. THIS IS THE REALITY OF OUR SOCIETY.
