This is a European Pagan tradition. smh

No it isn't. Maypole dancing with ribbons came to England via stage performances about 160 years ago. The earliest record I've found so far is a court entertainment in Italy about 500 years ago.

@@JudithProctor yes it is it has roots in Celtic druidism the maypole represent the tree of life in druidic myth, it's a dead religion so most don't know about it but the ribbons represent humans connection to the origin of life etc ... Basically nature worship
@Thermalist2 жыл бұрын
But it doesnt matter if it's European or not because Jamaica's motto is out of many one people and Europeans are people too ... And I'm sure you have some European ancestors like most Jamaicans

@@Thermalist Where do you people conjure up this nonsense from? Maypoles are found in countries with Germanic ancestry - therefore no 'Celtic' links to it at all. As to the ribbons, they are a late Victorian creation. The artist John Ruskin had seen poles with ribbons around them used in wedding ceremonies in Italy and with Whitelands teacher training college developed the idea of combining small maypoles (the original ones on village greens can be well over 80ft high) with coloured winding ribbons and country dances - the purpose being to provide exercise for school girls. So the type of Maypole in the video has nothing to do with, Druids, Celts, Pagans, fertility rituals or any other such twaddle.
