I love how the narrator tells the proper way to use the rifle to break the fall of the soldier during bounding, but then shows the soldiers breaking the fall with their knees.

"The loss of three tanks in fifteen minutes to Soviet anti-tank infantry teams unnerved the company team commander. Gone were his hopes of reducing casualties by keeping his infantry back, relatively safe inside their carriers. He ordered a platoon to dismount and to advance in line. Years of peacetime training had conditioned the commander to believing that tank forces advanced with the tanks in the lead - or else it wouldn't be a tank exercise, then? No exercises had simulated the vulnerability of million dollar tanks to hundred-dollar rockets. Forward went the infantry through the German woods. Tracking their movement though gun scopes and binoculars, the crews of the tank and carriers could easily see the nervousness in the infantrymens' tense mannerisms, seeming to signal the knowledge that their lives were being used to draw fire from the strong Soviet force hidden in the woods. After traversing two hundred meters in a few short few minutes, the fires did come - a near simultaneous crash of mortars, automatic grenade launchers, and machine guns. Observers saw at least ten of the small figures fall, vanishing in the dust. The captain hoped against hope that these men were taking cover. Replaying the scene in his mind, however, he saw legs buckle, rifles falling from limp hands as bullets chewed into heads and hearts. He had sent these men to their deaths, had given the verbal order personally. A surge of horror consumed him, burning for long seconds. Recovering his wits, he realized his order had the desired result: the Soviets had given a way their positions, unable to hold fire at the tempting sight of a infantry platoon advancing far from cover. Already the forward observer had radioed the coordinates to multiple artillery and mortar units in the rear. Over the next 5 minutes, 100 shells of various caliber detonated on the Soviet's positions....

hello pal cool question. I'd say with zero hesitation read Ralph Peters' Red Army. He is a brilliant man, serving as an intel officer in Europe during the cold war. That's the advantage he has over Tom Clancy, who was a self made expert, of the machinery, but not of the visceral psychological details of soldiers' thoughts that Peters has. Red Army is from the Russians' point of view, fascinatingly enough. And what's more, Peter's does the trick of not naming weapons system by names. Aside from a single instance (he describes an F-16 as an F-16) he pulls off this feat, quite naturally. Clancy was obsessed with the amazing hi tech weapons systems. In Red Army those are merely the platforms which his well developed characters live and die in. Get it. it's better than Team Yankee, Red Storm Rising, Third World War, Larry Bond's books. Let me know when you do okay? that book will always have a place in my heart after reading it twice.

Wow, that sounds amazing! Thanks for the recommendation, sounds like exactly the type of book I was interested in. I was just thinking of getting some Tom Clancy too, I have a friend who's read a ton of his stuff and likes it but this sounds like even more of my interest
