I talk about cameras... a lot.
There seems to be a lot of debate over the "best" camera or the "right" camera or what a particular camera is good for.
In fact, as photographers with an internet connection, we all know that one of the most closely guarded and cherished traditions for modern photographers is to aggressively debate every single aspect of anything even vaguely related to photography... even if that means we forget to take meaningful photos... I guess it's a sacrifice that must be made, right?
Camera style, brand, sensor size, lens mount, autofocus system, viewfinder type, frame rate, iso performance, dynamic range, color depth, pixel size, pixel number, video capabilities, available accessories, resale value, weather resistance, bit depth, jpeg vs raw, intended subject matter, battery life, control layout, the list goes on and on... these are ALL more important than something as meaningless as... the resulting photo... right?
This is just a casual talk about how I approach cameras and how I choose which one to use. Maybe you can relate?

Another great video, appreciate it Skyler. I've been considering buying one of these phone grips for a while because I normally get really good photos with my phone but I've always hated the actual experience of using it for dedicated photography. Going to pull the trigger on one of these the next time I'm back in the States.

Another Skyler King video? Like, comment and then watch! Edit: Now commenting properly: The right camera is the one you enjoy using. Personally I am a very mixed bag. When travelling I enjoy using my RX100 VII a lot. I don't have to worry about it, the Sony leather case is totally worn out so I've stopped caring about it, it's fast to shoot and it doesn't take up space. Back at home I have my Sony A9 with lots of e-mount glass for any serious occasion. When I want to experiment and have fun I grab one of the following: 5DC ( I now have 3 of these bodies!), 5DII or the 1D IV for any scenery of far away subject. It took me a lot of time to learn to use the 1D IV but it's an awesome camera. At the end of the day, glass matters more than the body.

Some time back I picked up the Ulanzi CapGrip original. It was a pretty nifty bit of kit. It was so much easier to use the phone, plus it has a tripod socket. You can remove the button and activate it remotely up to 40 feet. I later picked up the next version when I couldn't find my original. Which to my chagrin was sitting on a table-top tripod on a shelf. The new one though also has a cold shoe, so mounting a light or microphone works out. I love my 6D, 80D, etc. But... These days I take them out with the 24-70 or 70-200 f2.8 lenses and they are heavy. It reminds me of why I don't carry them around regularly. I'm older now and I don't shoot for work or to cover some event or some project. I hate to give up those awesome DSLRs and big lenses. But, what good if I don't get out there with them anymore. I need to keep one Capgrip in the vehicle and one nearby and use them with my S23 Ultra. I think it may also be time to pair down some cameras and lenses. Not all of them, but get it skinny. Then maybe a smaller, lighter, but still capable camera that asks you to take it with you and maybe you don't mind letting it ride along. Something to get my old butt motivated and actually active again. Great points in the video. If you are a photographer, then you make the image. The camera just records it.

I have some Ulanzi stuff and some smallrig stuff and have been impressed with the quality of them. I didn't know that Ulanzi made something like that, though (the CapGrip?). I am definitely going to look into it. One of my top 5 favorite cameras of all time (and one that I bought brand new) was the Olympus E-M5 Mark II. I have also owned some of the larger M4/3 cameras, such as the Panasonic G9. Although I did not buy the E-M5 Mark II with its size in mind, I definitely learned first hand the value of that system when it comes to saving space and weight. I am thinking of buying another E-M5 Mark II, a 45mm f1.8 prime, and the 17mm f1.8 prime just for how easy it is to toss in a bag or jacket pocket and take anywhere - While still providing some of my favorite image rendering of any camera I have ever owned.

I'll definitely check out the Olympus. They've always made some small, but great gear even in the film days. Looking at the used prices it would be pretty easy to build a basic kit with the stuff I have to sell/trade. I just weighed my backpack with the two bodies, lens, etc. and it's just under 17 lbs. Would probably hit that if I put the battery grip back on the 80D. I swear that bag feels heavier than my rucksack on a road march back in my Army days. The requirement then was the ruck had to be 35 lbs. LOL. I have my little Sony a5000 and a5100, but I do appreciate a viewfinder and a hot shoe. Appreciate the response and the information on the Olympus.

Where did you go to basic? I have "fond" memories of doing ruck marches up and down Misery, Heartbreak, and Agony... it definitely wears you down in a unique way. Also, you might like some of Gavin Hoey's older videos. He is a pro photographer who shoots with Olympus, exclusively. I don't use my camera the same way he does, but it was always really cool to see the legitimately "professional" results he was getting from those little cameras.

I just missed those happy hills at Fort Knox. I got in there late at night. They pulled some of us from the rest and told us we were being sent to Fort Jackson. After hearing about those *wee* inclines I was happy to just be there for three or four days just lounging around waiting to ship off to Jackson. LOL. We did have a kid in our platoon who dropped from the heat right after we got back to the barracks from a march. Oh, the memories. LOL. I've watched Gavin a lot before. I like his style and his work. Researching the Olympus I'm leaning towards a clean used MkIII. Now to just sell all this "young man's" gear. I'll keep the old 20D and 20D IR converted and a few pancake lenses (20 and 40mm). I appreciate the DSLRs, but I need light and easy to take along. The Olys have always had nice color from what I've seen. IBIS doesn't hurt either. Stay safe over there. Keep the earthquakes away.

The trip around Taiwan sounds like a neat adventure; looking forward to your video (good for you for waiting to post it). I've been thinking about applying to teach ESL there. The little cell phone camera grip handle looks like a handy (pardon the pun) tool. I'm going to check it out. I also believe any camera is a good camera even if there are varying features and specs.

You should definitely teach ESL here. Seriously. The cost of living is low, the amount you make from teaching is comparatively high, many schools (if you sign a contract with them) will actually pay living expenses and travel expenses on top of your regular pay, etc. You will be overwhelmed by the amount of beautiful places, delicious food, friendly people, etc. Not to mention, crime is virtually non existent.

"The only downside of shooting with your phone is the ergonomics" What about image quality? I feel like most phone pictures tend to feel flat compared to what I get from my full frame Canon.
@SkylerKing
@SkylerKing 4 ай бұрын
Of course a cell phone isn't going to have the same image quality as a full frame camera (that is one of the reasons I have a full frame camera with me any time I leave the house). The thought process started at 15:47 where I was discussing "every day carry" and got into what the average person typically prefers (which usually ends up being to just use their smartphone). So, if I out myself in the mindset of how I feel while using my phone to take photos in a situation where ultimate image quality is trumped by convenience, then the problem I encounter is ergonomics.

@@SkylerKingSure, if I want top-notch photo’s (maybe for post-processing and prints) my 6D or even 60D every time. Problem is, I don’t always have a DSLR with me, but my iPhone 13 is always with me. For that reason, I would say that most likely 90% or more of my most memorable photo’s were taken with a phone camera. It’s more than good enough for when capturing that moment means everything. Another great video Skyler, glad you are all safe and sound. Thanks man 👍

Well done. The last part shot using the phone camera still looks artificial, creamy, smooth and doesn't get the skin tone right. As discussed in the video, phone cameras bring in a lot of convenience and they remain to shine. But it completely lacks emotion.

the way you compose this video is nasty , pure nastiness , i get it you wanted cameras next to you , but there is a solution for this , take a box lift the cameras up a bit , and there you go , or get a wider lens , or move the camera back . Lots of choices and ways , but i just dont get it .

I guess you didn't read the opening title card? It was essentially a result of not checking framing at all before recording. I just set the camera up and hit record, then realized while editing that the framing was off.

@@SkylerKing So you didnt care basically , if this happened to me , and of course it happened happens to all of us , i respect the content so i make it again , or not upload at all . But usually i would even if i have Wifi , and i do on the camera , still faster to start recording , go back check if framing is good , if good continue , start recording . I never missed a frame even when i did not know anything about cameras and videography , i did electronics and used Sony A55 , never missed a frame . Im sorry that i sold that camera , i use 6D to record now , but that camera does the same thing and its smaller . I got it for 200$ , with a lens , but now its 250$ without a lens . so im not buying it because its very close to Nikon D600 , but it is a kind of mirrorless or half mirrorless and does amazing images , has in body stabilization and subject tracking , something that came much latter with mirrorless . They rarely happen to be on sale and hold value . But it is what it is .

I understand what you're saying and you're not "wrong" I just have a different opinion. For me, the information is the most important thing. I'm sitting in front of a camera in my office. The scene isn't changing or contributing anything. So if the framing ends up too tight, while it's not ideal, it's not the end of the world. I would rather have the real, unfiltered, original information posted (with less than ideal composition) than perfect composition while risking the information not being as good as it originally was. There are certain videos where composition, lighting, editing, etc, are a priority. This isn't one of those videos.

@@SkylerKing its all ok , if it works its good , i always say , any camera mentioned JPEG and RAW downloadable files help a lot , for you tube cant show the data , not the color gamut , not the DR , not anything , its optimized for different thing . So if someone reviews say Nikon D600/10, would be nice to leave 2 pictures , i have a Nikon D610 now , the shutter blades are all twisted . Will try to repair it . If i cant i will buy new shutter , but it turns out no one has Shutter repair video , no one , lots of them named like that but its all shutter replacement , so i guess i will be the first to do it . I just have to find time for it , my work is since 07. to 15h , have to get up at 06h to get there to 07 , with a baby and a wife , i dont have much time . So i trust the D610 will be on the table for 2 months at least . But i will take pictures , i will try to get the blades flat again by putting them between 2 pieces of glass with a weight on it , and leave it there for some time , heat it up , cool it down , heat , cool , to make whatever it is made of be flat again . If i make that work , i will be first in the world to do that . So You tube will get its first real Shutter repair video . Not shutter replacement . So if you like subscribe , i do not post garbage content , i don't have advertisement , its just photo gear and related stuff . But trust if i make a video its worth watching . And of course i will test the Nikon D610 VS say Canon 6D , and leave RAW and JPEG downloadable . If i have to replace the shutter i wont make a video about that since there is already enough on that subject . But lots of broken cameras came to me , every single one ended up working , so this one will work to. Thing is i used to do Astrophotography before i got a baby , then i couldn't , no time , but in those few years i was getting cameras from all over my country to do the Astromod , i even invented some techniques , for example Astro filter costs 100$ , but 1,25inch filter used on Eye pieces for telescope covers it , so i just got IR cut 1.25inch filters that are much cheaper . So i was able to offer the mod at the lowest price . But im in a small country if i was in America i would be in much better place . _But anyway enough of the rant . Its all good , god bless . Good video , except you know what part .
