The Right Light at Night | Lecture by Steve Tonkin is the Dark Skies Advisor to both the Cranborne Chase AONB International Dark Sky Reserve and the Federation of Astronomical Societies.
Friday 8th September, 2023, Queen Square, Bath.
It is now widely accepted that artificial light at night can have negative effects on human health, but what of its effects on wildlife? Did you know for example that artificial light leads to the death of billions of birds each year and that it is a major driver of the “insect apocalypse”, with studies suggesting that 40% of insects will become extinct within decades.
This is the first in a series of four talks on the Bath Preservation Trust / Herschel Museum of Astronomy theme Conserving the Planet. The other three talks are on Friday 13 October, Seeing the Light: Overcoming Light Pollution, Friday 3 November, A Cluttered & Noisy Sky? and Friday 1 December, Solutions to Space Debris- all at BRLSI.
