The media often scare us about 3D-printed guns. "Anyone can print it, no background checks, mental illness not a factor, virtually undetectable," a CNN anchor warns.

Politicians scare us too. It's "a direct threat to our national security," former Senator Bill Nelson claimed last summer.
But are they? For a video collaboration with the Federalist Society, I talked with Josh Blackman, the lawyer representing Defense Distributed - the company that posted blueprints for making 3D guns online.
Blackman says posting the 3D-gun blueprints is protected by the First Amendment, since the blueprints are a form of speech.
"The law can treat firearms like firearms. They can't treat the speech used to make them like firearms... We're fighting for the constitutional right to share these files with the world," Blackman tells me.
But Massachusetts legislator David Linsky, who has sponsored a bill to ban 3D-printed guns, doesn't buy that.
"It's not censorship when the national security and public safety are at stake," he tells me. "You shouldn't be able to make a gun in your own basement,”
Blackman asks, why not? "If we had a ban on home manufacture of weapons during the time of the American Revolution, we would probably still be under the King's rule."
The Constitution protects free speech and gun rights -- but it also says “provide for the common defense.” Could that be cited as a reason to limit these guns? Politicians call them a “windfall for terrorists.”
Blackman disagrees: "Terrorists have access to far more dangerous weapons than 3D-printed guns. The notion that ISIS is having a factory of 3D-printers, and making these stupid little plastic guns that can fire one shot at a time, it really strains credulity."
Even if the government wants to regulate 3D-printed guns, it will be nearly impossible. Blueprints are already all over the internet.
I showed Rep. Linsky some websites with blueprints. He was surprised, but said: "I understand that some people might think that the genie is out of the bottle… But let's put as much of that genie into the bottle as we possibly can."
"You can't put the genie back in the bottle,” Blackman responded. "One of the reasons why these efforts to regulate the internet are kinda silly is you can't shut down information. We believe in free speech. This is an important principle and the state can’t take us down."

@@Dennis-nc3vw actually, Tanks, planes, (lets add artillery and mortars too just for good measure) are incredibly safe when Americans without criminal records own them. We can and should talk about reasonable limits. The crime rates of countries like Switzerland (everyone armed, minimal crime) and Mexico (illegal to own, crime uncontolled) will be an important part of those discussions. For some ordnance (the large stuff), public disclosure of ownership would be sufficient to keep all in check. But the real issue to address is not the ordnance, but the confusion of not distinguishing the bad guys (wrongful misbehavior) from the good guys (American citizens bearing arms)

Joey Barreras they have thousands of shots through them already still going fine for the AR15 platform. The lower is what holds the magazine and grip to the upper (which is the important part), so I don’t think those lowers even get hot let alone warm (most gun lowers are polymers or plastic, haha, look at Glock, all of their lowers are plastic and they are so much closer basically touching the barrel!) I can tell you’ve never shot a gun before, or at least very little, they use plastic all the time as hand rails either DIRECTLY touching the hot metal barrel or just 1/10 away. Even with steaming hot barrels it isn’t a problem with regular plastic parts (additional fact, I use over 230*F on the heated bed for printing ABS to keep it slightly warm while printing, which is hotter than boiling water, I have to use 420*F to melt the plastic). You can also print Glock lowers as well (which I find really cool, because I love modding everything and competition Glocks are often modified, so might as well have custom hand fitment of frame and grips since the files are available for adjusting however you want, a lot better than simply aesthetic designs for M1911 grips but that’s cool too).

@Tucson Jim Well, there's a strawman sliding down a slippery slope. I'm looking at what the politician said, which doesn't make logical sense. If the politician gave actual reasons to "put as much of the genie back into the bottle as we can" in this video, I'd not make this point. Instead, I'd only address it if I felt like it. Now, let's go over your examples. Nuclear bombs: Are there publicly accessible sources to make them? And no, the dark web doesn't count. Julian Assange: What are the officials saying he was arrested for again? I'm certain they aren't admitting it's sharing information that can turn elections as seen in 2016. Child porn: Wow, you're really trying to make me out to be an immoral jerk with this one. Why would I support anyone exploiting someone that doesn't know it's happening? Or, worse, thinks it's normal. Credit card and identity theft: I'm paring these up because they're so closely related. This information is classified as private for a reason. If it ever comes up on the surface web, I'll do more than condemn it. I'd work to scrub it back to the deep web. Spying: Why would I support anyone spying on people? That's just creepy. Now for your final question in this slide: am I OK sharing everything? I think my responses to each part should answer that. However, if that doesn't, the fact I'm using a pseudonym on the Internet should tip you off. Now to the rest of your comment because it's that juicy. I'm not the one who has to strawman my opponent and butter a hill to win. I'm all for American values, but politicians have left those values behind for payments from corporations. I want people to be free so long as they don't harm another. Last time I checked, it was Democrats who wanted stricter gun laws, not Republicans. However, it would be nice if Congressmen voted how the people who voted them in wanted. It would do a lot to restore integrity within government. As for the politician you named, I'm giving him the benefit of the doubt and say he's foolish, stupid, or both. For who you want to ban, I say only ban them if or when they get violent. Otherwise, you're just restricting their speech, which is, not only unconstitutional, but unamerican. Now for something I want to say to you: FORMAT YOUR COMMENT BETTER! IT WAS A PAIN TO READ THROUGH THAT WALL OF TEXT, ESPECIALLY WHEN I WANTED TO REREAD A CERTAIN TOPIC TO RESPOND!

3D printing has been around for more than a decade at an affordable $150-200 price range. It's was a grass-roots, crowd-sourced technology that has the capacity to reproduce many of it's own parts at low cost. A quality gun is a great deal more expensive than basic 3D printing technology.

What's new is a perceived low barrier of entry. But I've downloaded the plans and it is just a 3D model. You can't print that file format. You need to slice it. The "plans" are basically a very special image. Just a picture really. When Defense Distributed (DD) printed their guns they did it on a printer they rented. Because it was a very expensive piece of machinery. It isn't one of these cheap desktop printers people are getting out of the far east today. They tried using one of those and it doesn't work. When you dig into this story it is obviously a publicity stunt used to garner attention for other activities DD is involved with.

Those who would give up essential Liberty, to purchase a little temporary Safety, deserve neither Liberty nor Safety. - Benjamin Franklin Before background checks and the NFA, mass shootings were rare, extremely rare compared with the large restrictions gun owners face today. In fact crime was a lot less back then and rather than 300 people shot at a concert you had John Dillinger robbing banks. More laws does not help.
@Snowmon89
@Snowmon89 5 жыл бұрын
Well, to be completely fair, it was also rare because our population was much smaller back then as well. Fact is that "mass shootings" tend to be a big city problem, not a small town problem. That said, the more people try to ban guns the more dangerous the society becomes for the average citizen. Crime Rates Do Not decrease just beacuse you ban a single gun or all guns. England's crime rate is the same and even the Police aren't allowed to own a gun. Home Invassions Increased in Australia after the massive buyback. (Yes, the gun violence decreased, but not only was it Already decreasing before said buyback, but the country of Australia doesn't use the same definition for a "mass shooting" as the rest of the world.) It's also important to note that most of these 3D printed guns are one shot then they're done. Even if they survive the first shot, they have a much longer cooling period than even the muskets back durring the Revolutionary War. I find it hilarious that they say, "people have access to AR-15's they don't need a printable gun," while it's obvious that they also want to ban the AR-15. In fact his own state Already Has. Many innocent people are arrested all the time just for owning their legally purchased guns and following basic proceedures. This IS NOT just about Free Speech, this is also about the Right to Bear Arms and the entire point of why BOTH of these Rights are embedded in our Constitution in the first place. This is about Politicians trying to gain more and more power. It has never been about people's safety and it never will.

The part where it says "a well regulated militia being necessary for the defense of the nation" is all about their first hand experience of having their own government (the British government) turn against them. Everyone that wants gun control needs to study the history of all of those governments that have turned on their own population...hundreds of millions of people have been murdered at the hands of their own government. We live in the good times...where there are very few being killed...and many people are foolishly trading away their rights for the perception of "security". Think about Pol Pot. His actions resulted in the deaths of 25% of Cambodia's population. That would be over 80 million if it happened in the US and it would take over 2000 years of the highest murder rate in the US to equal that.

"Now we have AR-15s and semi-automatic guns" Let me help clue you in on a little hint: Those two things? They're functionally the same thing. 1 trigger pull = 1 bullet fired. That's literally what semi-automatic means. That's all AR-15s, that's all pistols, those are all legally obtainable firearms within the US. The whole "Oh oh but AR-15s" argument is a non-starter and disingenuous because the vast overwhelming majority of gun crime, gun deaths, and mass shootings happen with pistols. Only a very small fraction of them occur with rifles. It's also a disingenuous argument for that reason. The fact is also, even if we as citizens conceded that ground and said "sure, ban rifles" statistically as a matter of historical accuracy the vast majority of gun deaths, especially in the case of mass shooting which they choose to focus on, is committed with pistols. So by a matter of statistics, it wouldn't be even remotely effective in stopping mass shootings nor gun death nor gun crime period. So it's a disingenuous argument to say you only want to ban AR-15s. It's a gateway argument to open the door to further suppression and removal of the 2nd amendment right. That's their goal fundamentally because, as I just stated, the overwhelming majority of gun deaths and gun violence are done with handguns, not "AR-15s" or rifles. Now that we discussed the statistics, even the "moral" emotional argument behind it is, itself, immoral. They make the argument that "removing guns from society is necessary to stop bad people and that's worth giving up that right." Well hold on a second, so you're for the removal of the rights of the overwhelming majority because there's a very minuscule fraction of society that commits gun violence and mass shootings? Do we ban knives then? You're far more likely to get stabbed with a knife than shot. Do we ban cars? There's already a precedent set and shown that people use vehicles to commit acts of terrorism, running over large groups of people. Even more, people abuse alcohol and cause harm/kill people when they drive. Guess it's time to reinstate Prohibition? No, of course not and that precisely the point. You don't punish the rights of the majority of citizens because people misuse something. If that's your logic and your motive, to ban anything that can be used as a weapon, then home improvement and general Do-It-Yourself stores should be banned. Knives should be banned, forks too. If you're crafty enough you could gouge out someone's eye with a spoon, guess we can't have those either. It's an obviously absurd proposal and that's why the argument against guns isn't a logical argument. I could argue, in detail, on top of all this the Constitutional reason for why we have the 2nd amendment but you can point out the disingenuous and facetious nature of the argument just by pointing out their lack of understand of what firearms are and aren't legal, what semi-automatic means, the reality that you can never stop people who genuinely want to cause harm to others, or the fact that 2A exists because the founders of this country realized that any government has the potential to become corrupt and infringe on the rights of the people. That's why out of ALL of the amendments that the 2nd amendment explicitly states that it shall NOT be infringed.
