Here I teach how to properly block roundhouse kicks for Muay Thai, Taekwondo, MMA, or even a street fight. Remember to lift your leg up and out on that 45 degree, blocking shin on shin. You can block with your knee, but that is sort of frowned upon in most organizations (think Anderson Silva - Chris Weidman).
Get your fightTIPS shirt►full.sc/1hJEmr2
If you are blocking a body kick or high kick, remember to keep your hands up to protect your head. And as always, counter-attack! A common counter to round kicks is just returning a kick back of your own. This is another reason why it is important that you stand your ground, and don't keep the weight in your heels.

I've done my share of martial arts for eight years. I am no pro, I only practised Wing-Chun Kung-Fu. The thing I learned for blocking a kick is, use that case only as a last resort, if you can evade a kick do it, if you can't and you have no time to spare it with your hand, do that. BUT never, never have the end of your feet facing downwards. If you keep it pulled up, the way you do to avoid crambs, your muscles will protect your shinbone.

hey Shane, awesome videos!, quick question: doesnt this blocking compromises your balance? i mean youre standing in one leg, thats all the base youll have when the other guy kick you,i think it wouldnt need much force to get you down, i have never practice muay thai or MMA, i did TKD and karate during highschool and college, (where this technique is not quite used), so i dont know how effective it could be, looks useful, but how can i develope it (i mean now i train just by myself, and just because i like it, so no tournaments, no master, no training partner, and i cant kick myself and believeme i tried)

Hey Shane. I think that when you lift your leg to block, you're not supposed to have your feet pointing towards the ground and you only do that while throwing a knee. Correct me if I'm wrong.

Hi Shane, my coach says that when you are blocking a kick, you should have your toes pointing up not down, because then your tibialis anterior muscle is tighten, and then blocking the kick isn't so painful. We've been practicing it both ways and this vesrsion with toes pointing up is really less painful. What do you think about it?

I just wanted to say there was fight in the UFC that a man names James Krause took advantage of Jamie Varner pointing the foot down like what you do in the freeze frame of 1:32 He basically threw really low kicks, but when Varner checked them, he checked them with his foot by mistake because of how low the kick was and ended up breaking his foot. Just wanted to put that out there. What do you think? Is is the foot pointed down better or contracted to face the bottom of the foot to the ground?

Yeah, shin on shin works well enough for roundhouses if you intercept them in time but not so well for knees. One trick that can work against this block is to throw an outside roundhouse as a feint and then follow up on the inside with a sweeping knee to the blocking leg.
@MrWrecklessD
@MrWrecklessD 6 жыл бұрын
The key here is to block using the knee and the very upper part of the shin i.e Anderson silva vs weidman. If you lift too high their kick will land lower and it will hurt your shin like hell. Point toes up not down to flex muscles in the shin and protect more. I wouldn't lift the leg to block a body kick. It just leaves you open to a hard sweep if they faint and go under or a hard shin on shin hit. And always step out of their range as you parry their head kick or you will be wide open to a body kick follow up.

I'm a toes down kind of guy as with most Muay Thai fighters; you get your toes broken enough times & you will get sick of it. Though I do hear what you are saying; it does help support checks utilising the knee. If you do check with toes up my advice would be do it every now and then, not all the time.... No one likes breaking their sparring partners toes.

I can see a discussion here as to whether a toe should be pointed up or down. The thing is, when you point your toe down and if someone kicks you right in your foot you are highly likely to get a hyperextension on your foot. Also, if you point it down, just like you do in the video, that block is very weak and as soon as the kick comes in your leg is gonna inevitably bend inwards, it's gonna disturb your balance. Your opponent is gonna score. It's true, pointing a toe up is very hard, and I think it's to do with psychology, in the same way as when you point your toe away from you when you kick a pad so there's no perpendicular collision between a pad and your toes.

@Sadoruro

I used to block low kick like that, having learnt it in kickboxing / mma class. I thought it was good until one of my master showed us the flaws, and how it was easy to wipe both of the legs when you target the rised ankle, resulting you to fall. Then he showed us a new way, safer way to block, by keeping you leg far closer to the ground and do not rise it so high, and turn it to 45° like you. Result is, as a low kick usually target the side of the knee or just above, then you'll block the kick using your knee, which possess stronger bones than the shin and that can even result in an injury on the opponent shin. And if you keep your leg closer to the ground, you'll be able to prevent your legs to be wiped. Always thought it was better. Question now : does parry exist in Muay Thai ? Because I always see only blocks in those kind of videos, but what about the parry ? Do you think a good old parry is useless in a fight.

The position of your leg while checking a kick absorbs the impact better whereas while kicking all force is absorbed in just your leg causing more pressure and damage
@AmisTheos
@AmisTheos 9 жыл бұрын
HamburgerFeet I appreciate the time you took to respond man! I was looking for something that I could visualise easier though. So does that mean that while the checker absorbs the kick better and more slowly, the resistance force of your shin is transferred to the kicker straight away which makes it more painful?
@matbroomfield
@matbroomfield 9 жыл бұрын
HamburgerFeet I'm sorry, but how can that be the case? Both legs are at right angles to each other. Assuming you block with the same part of your leg as they strike with, there appears to be no functionally greater way for the checker to absorb the kick than for the kicker.
@hamburgerfeet5516
@hamburgerfeet5516 9 жыл бұрын
Mat Broomfield the position of the whole leg, not just the shin, makes it so the impact is absorbed across the whole leg, not just the shin. the kicker however, has his leg straight, or quite straight at least, so the impact is only absorbed by the part of the shin that makes contact, meaning it hurts a lot more.
@hamburgerfeet5516
@hamburgerfeet5516 9 жыл бұрын
Tyler Jones a way to visualise it would be that the checker's leg position is like a spring, sort of a suspension, allowing it to disperse the force through his whole leg and body, meaning less pressure to one area. the kicker, however, has his leg pretty much straight meaning it is like an iron bar, and it has no springy-ness to spread the force, so all of the force hits a small area, making it hurt a lot more. (But leg conditioning also makes a big difference so you should definitely still do it lol)

the block to the face is good, but your forearm might get broken. you need to block with 2 arms, using both your forearms leaning forward to absorb the impact. you aint gonna be able to block a strong kick with your left arm and grab with your right. if it were that simple, Muay Thai fighters and MMA fighters would be doing that all the time. instead they avoid a kick by moving out of range or blockin with two forearms leaning forward. trust me bro i had 15 years training muay thai and u got everything right except for the head kick defense technique. ( Because kicks are easy to telegraph ) Lean forward with 2 forearms blocking the face and if the impact is strong enuff, he should go off balance. if u are a orthodox fighter then as he goes off balance, ( u r in great position ) counter with a quick left hook and then a right cross. Or if fast enuff u could follow up with a left leg kick to ur oppenents left calf after the double forearm block cuz hes already going off balance with one leg planted on the floor. if u wanna be all fancy n stuff, after the lean forward double forearm block, quickly do a spinning left elbow stirke if in close range. a spinning back fist works too but u might break your wrist and this technique works for me all the time and for other REAL Muay thai fighters from Thailand. By the way you are an awsome boxer and i learned alot from u. but just thought i tell u your mistakes on this video.

The untrained person still has somewhat strong shins, untrained vs untrained your shin should be fine. If you want to go against muay thai but you don't want to condition your shins then you should condition your forearms to performs Japanese Jiu Jutsu or Krav Maga kick blocks with less risk. Though I really do not recommend this; as kick power and volume can easily overwhelm blocks with the arms.

This is a bad demonstration. I've trained in Thailand with Buakaw at Banchamek Gym, and Saenchai and Pakorn at 13 Coins. First, you shouldn't point your toes down. They should be pointed up so that you're flexing and blocking with leg muscle, not just the bone of the shin. And if your opponent kicks your ankle when your toes are pointed down, it's going to hurt. Also, blocking a head kick -- you should lean into it, not away from it. And good luck sweeping a headkick...
@Arnmazing23
@Arnmazing23 8 жыл бұрын
+Ben Laverock that's what I'm saying, when I block kicks to the body and head I don't have my knees up I just use my arm and lean towards the kick. I only use shins when I check low kicks. I block head kick the same way I block a hook.

I'm unsure what shane is thinking with bringing the hand across to sweep a high kick down... I honestly wouldn't try it for a number of reasons. The rest is sound though, dumbed down but still effective. On the other hand Ben, Adam, etc you guys just seem like you are talking from conjecture. I've never seen my mates who come back from training at Banchamek Gym curl their toes up and on no planet have I ever seen someone in Muay Thai deliberately "block with the leg muscle". That is just make-believe.

Just want to add two things. Firstly, it is always best to try to block the kick with the biggest part of your shin against the smallest part of their shin. The shin is at its most massive immediately below the knee and tapers to its smallest immediately above the foot. I will always try to catch a kick as far down their leg as possible with the highest, thickest part of my shin (even better, catch their foot; those tiny bones break easily). Especially if your bone structure is larger than the kickers and they kick hard, it’s possibly that their tibia (shin bone) will break on contact with your shin. I realize that this video is for absolute beginners so I’m not trying to undercut you, I’m actually not familiar with your work so no judgement. However, it is very important to stress that if you don’t want to be knocked out of position blocking a headkick, you will want to lean into the high kick. Also, that off hand that you are saying may be used for sweeping (I’ve not had luck sweeping head kicks) is most effective (ime) as a failsafe for preventing the kick sliding or riding up your forearm and connecting with the top of your head which can affect balance significantly or even knock you out. It also helps take off some of the steam when one blocking arm may not be enough. LASTLY, it’s always best to NOT BE THERE. Fading/leaning back off the kicking line is the very best way to deal with a headkick. Train hard!

Like so many of your videos recently, you give dangerously incomplete information. Those shin blocks are only safe-ish,if you have years of shin conditioning OR you're wearing pads. Teaching this to a mostly teen audience without mentioning that is setting them up to get seriously hurt. As for the thigh kicks, I don't know who does them in a street fight, but "5 of them then you're gong to be in trouble" Seriously? One decent thigh kick with a shin is enough to drop an unconditioned person. And then your head blocks. I'm assuming that your head is in range of their foot, yet you're going to risk your safety to a cross body block with a single arm, WHILST leaning away, then you're going to scoop the leg away all without moving back out of range? So your opposite arm is more powerful than a leg that can potential snap a baseball bat? Damned if I'd want to risk that. Shane, some of your stuff can be quite insightful, but this video seemed bad to the degree of being dangerous. It's just irresponsible to put stuff like this out without qualification.

Clearly you don't have much martial arts experience or you are a troll, but that's okay. First off... fighting is unsafe... someone is going to get hurt, that is the idea of fighting. Second.. I rather injure myself while trying to defend myself... than getting beat up doing nothing or not knowing how to. (I think most people here would agree) Third.. I blocked hundreds of kicks (I practice muay thai/Kickboxing on a competition level more than 5 years now) and its the practice that makes perfect... not years of shin conditioning! Fourth.. If i was in a street fight.. the first thing i would do is to take a leg out. (you said it yourself 1 decent kick to an unconditioned thigh.. and he will not be able to stand for 2 weeks) Fifth.. That headblock is pretty common in muay thai/ kickboxing.. in fact.. its one of the most Fail safe one's against a headkick. The hand ind the front catches the leg (like catching a ball) and deflects it. A kick or a punch does not require a lot of force to be deflected or neutralized. As long as it happens at the right moment (again practice practice practice). The hand in the back is a safety. If for some reason the kick is not enough deflected or not properly catched it just hit you in the glove quite harmless It also covers the head while clearing the leg And i agree.. when he catches it he probably has to move a bit. But keep in mind these blocks are normally done in fluid automated movements. Not while standing still maintaining balance and trying to tell people how they work. The speed and movement also vary, because not every fight is the same. Sometimes you step out or lean in, it all depends on numerous things. And on what you and your opponent are going to do next. I think Shane gave some good examples to show how you can block with the shins, and defend headkicks. And again.. practice makes perfect! (there is no fighter who became a fighter without practice). If you still don't believe that it works i would suggest you visit a local muay thai/ kickboxing gym and take a trial lesson. Then you can experience these techniques in an controlled environment.

keesjanklootviool Nah you're right, not much martial arts experience - just 30 years ;-) The idea of fighting is that THE OTHER PERSON gets hurt not you. If shin blocks are all about technique rather than conditioning, why are the re hundreds of sites and videos showing you HOW to condition your shins for Muay Thai, and why do kicksboxers STILL wear leg pads even at semi pro level? I don't doubt that proper technique is a huge component, but to say that it's NOT shin conditioning that matters, makes me wonder how you block. As for head blocks, I'm sorry, but I simply do not accept that the block shown, at the distance where the opponent can head kick, is a safe block. A shin is two or three times thicker and stronger than either the radius or ulna in the arm, and can easily break clean through both, which is not to say that one should never block or parry a head height round kick, but the block as shown, makes all kinds of assumptions about the audience that will get them into trouble. The fact is, a large part of Shane's audience are wannabe, inexperienced teenagers and you need to spell stuff out to these guys so that they don't hurt themselves. For example, in order to pull the kick down away from the face, you would either need to fade away from the kick, step back, or for the attacker to be out of effective range in the first place. I agree that a kick or punch does not NECESSARILY need a lot of force to be deflected - that's the whole principle of arts like aikido. However, when you meet an incoming attack perpendicular to the angle of motion, one of two things needs to happen - you either need to be more robust than the attacker, or you need to take the speed out of the attack, either by redirection or acting like a damper. I don't see how the range of this block enables Shane's arms to redirect, and the distance from his own head and the weakness of his arm relative to the incoming limb makes it dangerous to take the damper approach. I do concede however, that gloves may be the vital dynamic that I am missing. I don't fight in gloves or leg pads, so I don't depend on them to cushion incoming attacks. They may enable you to take liberties that one would not take without them, in which case, I would suggest that as courtesy to an audience not all coming from a kickboxing background, that Shane highlights that point.

Mat Broomfield Let me put it this way.. these techniques are hundreds of years old.. they are still used today even by professional fighters. If you are in doubt that they do not work, just don't use them. Personally i believe they do work, and that they are effective. But that's just out of my own experience. If you have a better solution/idea/technique, tell us or even better start your own fight tips! Shane is trained in muay thai so he uses a lot of muay thai techniques, The videos he makes show a lot of simple but effective muay thai techniques, If you don't like that, don't watch the video's. If you think that there dangerous, don't use them. If you don't like Shane, go tell him with a pm. But don't tell these "teenagers" what and what not to learn. Let them decide. OSU..

keesjanklootviool I do like Shane, but I don't revere him. He posts a lot of pretty good videos. This wasn't one of them. A better solution to a round kick? Totally depends upon your range. Far out, fade back, hook it with your hands (kind of like Shane appears to be doing here). In close, lift your arm like you're trying to elbow to the face. Middle distance, move forwards strongly towards the attacker's opposite shoulder striking the head or shoulder. Slightly further out, kick the supporting leg. I'm not a fan of blocking round kicks at all if I can help it, but some kickers are too quick, or disguise their intentions so well that you're forced into it. There are simply so many variables, and your own athleticism, bravery and the relative strength and weight of the two combatants makes a big difference. I used to have a student who was so powerful that ANYTHING you put in the way, he was going to break through. He made me feel like a beginner again. I would love to see you use these techniques against a committed kicker, not a tappy points fighter, but someone who is aiming to take your head of. I say that not to disparage you, but because you sound very confident in your technique. If it works as you believe it does, I'd be curious to understand the finer points of how you make it work. I don't really do the osu thing, but thank you, and respect to you too.

Mat Broomfield I think it depends more on the person than the technique, an inexperienced fighter even with the best defensive techniques will lose to an experienced and conditioned kicker. Out on the street I wouldn't block low kicks with the shin, a better technique for an inexperienced fighter (against some one at the same level) would be stopping the shin/knee with the sole of your shoe, like stepping on the kick, that way you don't get hurt if you are not conditioned and with the right shoes you can do enough damage to discourage someone from kicking. In any way, submission arts (like jiu jitsu) are vastly superior to any kicking or punching styles especially against someone inexperienced even if they are stronger or heavier.

No, they actually kick trees and stuff to build shin bone. The idea is that you will get micro fractures and then the body will build it back better than before. After doing this many times, it would take a lot of force to actually break the shin bone located in your leg. You can look up the science behind it if you do not believe me.
