The Ed Sullivan Show was a television variety program that aired on CBS from 1948-1971. For 23 years it aired every Sunday night and played host to the world's greatest talents. The Ed Sullivan Show is well known for bringing rock n' roll music to the forefront of American culture through acts like Elvis Presley, The Beatles, and The Rolling Stones. The entertainers each week ranged from comedians like Joan Rivers and Rodney Dangerfield, to Broadway stars Julie Andrews and Richard Burton, to pop singers such as Bobby Darin and Petula Clark. It also frequently featured stars of Motown such as The Supremes, The Temptations, Stevie Wonder and The Jackson 5. The Ed Sullivan Show was one of the only places on American television where such a wide variety of popular culture was showcased and its legacy lives on to this day.

I don’t think most people know what a true counter tenor is. It’s not pushing your voice high, or straining, like falsetto. It’s just as natural for Bobby as breathing, with no effort. Bobby’s register is amazing. But what distinguishes him from all others is the warmth and sincerity and love radiating from him. To me it’s unusual to hear that higher register with such tenderness. . God gave him an amazing talent. And I wish he had used it more and that we had a lot more videos.

One thing that stood out about Bobby was that he was the whole package. Bobby was, bottom line, a truly good man. He loved his music. The sincerity and passion in his voice was so real. His children adored him, and he adored them. He and Linda adored each other. They were perfect together. There's not much more to say about Bobby. He was, and is still, so loved. And he left behind an unmatched legacy of beautiful music for future generations to discover.

@Elisa-ul2we

I actually think the term Blue Eyed Soul did them a disservice, although it shouldn't have, but I feel they thought of themselves as inferior blues singers, which of course they weren't, if anyone doubts it their Shindig performance with the Blossoms should dispel that myth. Sadly, I suspect their relatively low-key success was due to being white boys in black dominated music.
@Aurora-tp3dy

They are blue-eyed soul. The term was coined just for them. A DJ in Philly after meeting them, and their blue eyes, started calling them his blue-eyed soul brothers. To me calling so many others that watered it down making it almost meaningless.

@@Elisa-ul2we Have to disagree with most of what you feel. Bill's ego wouldn't let him feel inferior to anyone. Bobby was a humble person, but humble doesn't equal feeling inferior. Also, they were well respected in the black music community and general public. If Bill hadn't decided to go solo, there is no telling what they could have accomplished.

richardthiele8363 it did not matter what song Bobby sang wether solo or with Bill. They were blessed individuals with such voices. Bobby was a countertenor, what a blessed voice. Any song that he sang was done so effortlessly. Even as he has gotten older he still maintained his vocal range. No one then or now could ever achieve those octaves without utilizing the feature of autotune that came in place in the 90' s. Over the years heard al hiber or ray Hamilton rendition of unchained melody. To do a comparison or not ray Hamilton was the closest to Bobby's vocal range even though he was a tenor. If you would like look into Bobby's version of the classic summertime. He does his own spin on it, hopefully you will be pleasantly surprised. Also look into his version of ebb tide, my prayer, song from west side story or any of his solos that were either a live performance or recorded in studio. His version of unchained melody was a live performance Andy Williams show in 1965. Bobby you are much dearly missed, your 🎶 still and will continue on after all these years.

I get that everyone loves Bobby's very impressive high notes ( and his overall range for that matter), but give Bill Medley his due, also! It's equally as difficult to sustain those bass notes as it is for the tenor & soprano notes. Both of these guys made singing look effortless when, in fact, it's a buttload of work ~ just like playing ANY musical instrument is! Just enjoy, these guys were meant to sing together and we all reap the benefits, yeh?

It's not just his "high notes"; the man had a voice like velvet - haunting and mesmerizing - a male siren! Yes, they were great as soloists, but magic together. And Bobby was magical all by himself. Bill had a brooding sensuality, but moreso when he soloed on some of his ballads, like "learning to Love Again and "Till Your Memory's Gone." Bill would make any woman fall to her knees. I just watched for comparison Andre Rieu's massive orchestra, Gary & the Pacemakers as well as the Searchers doing this song. However, I keep coming back to this performance: Bill Medley's rich bass-baritone and Bobby Hatfield's soaring countertenor just take this to another level few others can achieve. That glorious ending with Bobby's pitch-perfect voice is almost too much to bear. It mystifies me that especially Bobby Hatfield is so underappreciated (except on KZfaq of course).

@@barbaral8973 that's nice to hear, they both vocally complemented each other. Bill with his baritone voice, Bobby with his tenor/counter tenor voice, no falsetto. There will perhaps never be two individuals that blended so well vocally. Bill is still going strong, Bobby you are dearly missed, your music still lives on to this day and forever. Perhaps there will be no other artists that can compare to these gentlemen. They were blessed with such beautiful voices.

Any songs that he did either live or in recording studio, no artists then or now could ever reach that level w/o using the autotune feature. Bobby was heavenly blessed with such a beautiful voice. Any songs that he did were done effortlessly. Bobby you are dearly missed. Its a blessing that your 🎶 is still with us.

marymichael1211 yes, many people that met him in early years, or later, said that he was gracious, humble, no airs. His parents. did well, raising such a beautiful person. They were blessed to hear his son sing live on Andy Williams program, in 1977. They perhaps had listen to him sing, at home, but not a live performance. I'm sure they were pleased w/his performance. Realizing it was done "live" w/ Andy Williams orchestra. It was done in one take, how thrilling. Andy was a class act, he always wanted everything to go well. He would over the years in television, bring on new talents, give them a start. Andy did start of in radio, then to television, with his brothers, then over time went solo. Andy, Bobby you are missed, your musica is still w/us.

Bobby's breath control is out of this world! He makes it sound so effortless and polished, almost operatic; that distinguishes him from most other singers who really work hard at pushing out the notes and often end up murdering the song. What is even more amazing is the fact that neither Bobby nor Bill had formal voice lessons, other than that time when Bill lost his voice and feared he'd never sing again. They just worked very, very hard and polished their performance, perfecting their skills by listening to their favorite artists: Sam Cooke, Roy Hamilton, Ray Charles and so many more. But they also sang with soul, something that cannot be taught.

Bobby's voice is so unique and instantly recognisable. Listening to him and watching him sing is an almost mystical experience at times. If I could choose a last song to listen to it would be Stay With Me (baby), his version is incredibly moving and for me, he owns it entirely, just as Unchained Melody belongs to him. I love their early Shindig appearances too which showed what amazing performers Bill and Bobby were in the early years and it's a joy to watch them having so much fun. I too wish we had more videos, but there are also some film appearances, such as A Swingin' Summer, a brilliant performance of Justine at the end, and Beach Ball, both teen movies but well worth looking for. Together they were the best, but Bobby's talent was in a class of its own.
