In the narrative poem The Rime of the Ancient Mariner, a sailor kills an innocent albatross that has been following his ship.
Taking this life has serious consequences for the sailor and his crew, whose journey grows difficult. The sailor’s life is seemingly derailed by just one instance of overconfidence.
While the poem chronicles an ostensibly pragmatic voyage to the Antarctic, its narrator shares profound observations of his environment and his own resulting mental state.
Ghastly figures gamble for the life of the crew and sea serpents writhe in the freezing waters surrounding the boat. Because the narrator of the poem is the only survivor, his subjective experiences become the only record of the ill-fated venture.
Filled with savage natural imagery and human emotion, it also contains references to the supernatural.
Samuel Taylor Coleridge is considered one of the founders of the Romantic Movement of the 18th century. The Rime of the Ancient Mariner was first published in 1798 and epitomizes the Romantic form, a rejection of the cold rationality of the Enlightenment. The Romantics valued natural speech, simple themes, the beauty of nature, emotion, and abstract thought.
The narrative poem contains many important symbols, including the albatross, representing good luck or a bad omen in maritime lore; the gaze, symbolizing the supernatural and communication without speech; and the sun and moon, representing the opposing forces of the Mariner’s journey.

The real message of the poem is that man cannot continually take from Nature for his sole gain, nor can he take from humanity. This occurred in a time when environmentalism was becoming a new concept. Man must live in harmony, and when he becomes exploitive of nature, a curse (like an Albatross, which is a universal synonym of an unwanted thing / person) will follow him, and make him accountable for his poor environmental decisions. Like Christ, the Mariner is burdened with a cross, in this case hung around his neck, and in fact the poem specifically makes this reference. The Mariner seeks salvation by warning others that the true joy of life, particularly a life lead with Christ, is to respect all things equally, even a lowly albatross bird. His is prompted to look upon souls that are need of salvation (of all kinds), to tell them of his tales of woe, and redemption. The opening scene is that of the “grey bearded loon”, the Mariner, speaking to a wedding guest. The guest is transfixed, although not en-spelled by the Mariner. The guest listens to the Mariner like a “child of three [years]”.

My father forced me to memorize several of the most gory stanzas from this poem in the summer of my 10th year. "I bit my arm, I sucked the blood, I cried, 'A sail! A sail!" "And with his bow, he shot the albatross." And how Death rolled the dice for the life of a dehydrated sailor, and won - and she whistled thrice. I'm now 67 years old, and never forgave my father for that. I'd never have dreamt of making one of my own kids do that during their time off from school.

Hello, I am a person from Bangladesh. In my academic English book, this story was included. I searched on the internet to have a clear idea about this story. Unfortunately, most of the videos that described this story are explained robustly, Specially in India and Bangladesh. It would have been better if there were more animations in this video.

I don’t feel invested in the host, or his delivery. He should know the poem, the environmental message, the era in which the poet came from, and was influenced by, and instead seems to be making a mockery of this process. For these reasons, this is a terrible product.
