The Rio Grande Southern #41, "SHAKEDOWN". Pacing With Tonnage 11/18/23

I paced the recently “Shopped" RGS #41 on a second shakedown run to Hermosa, Saturday 11/18/23. The second day test run pulled an open gon and a caboose for some tonnage to Rockwood. This 142-year-old locomotive looks and runs great and sounds good.
The 70-year-old RGS #41 was purchased by Knotts Berry Farm in 1951 for the Ghost Town & Calico Railroad in Buena Park, CA. and has spent the last 72 years running clockwise around the less than a mile circle. I first rode the #41 at 5 in mid 1950's, again in the mid 90's and mid 2000's. It was awesome to hear, see her running straight at 20+ MPH and pulling a grade. In Feb. 2022 the #41 was trucked to Durango for a complete rebuild and has been off limits to unauthorized photographs and videos till now.
The #41 was built by Baldwin Locomotive Works in 1881 as a 2-8-0 Consolidation, for the D&RG as #409 "Red Cliff", sold to the RGS and renumbered #41 in 1916 and classified as a "C-19" in 1921.

Sometime i hope the 41 Will Pull a Regular Passenger Train To Silverton Or To Cascade Canyon and i hope The 340 will come to the Durango And Silverton Sometime

Beautiful pacing. Is the box type valve gear what is called a wahlshert?

It is not Walschaerts valve gear. It is internal. I suspect it might be Stephenson or Gooch, but certainly not Walschaerts valve gear, which is typically external.

@@pmaitrasm Oh you CAN have internal Walschaerts! King Class on UK GWR had it. One eccentric on the axle powering two sets of valve gear via a rocking arm. It is a four cylinder locomotive with two sets of valve gear, each powering one internal and one external cylinder.

The first time a C-19 has run on the Silverton branch since 1951, when #345 was wrecked in the staged head-on collision with C-18 #319 for the movie Denver and Rio Grande
