Join in as we have a little chat about Apex Nürburg and my thoughts on its evolution over the last 7 years. Where we have been and where we are going!
So often we think about how scale up our businesses but in some special cases we have goals that are not growth driven. It can be difficult to know you have reached a limit or even when you should downsize, usually your gut will tell you… its hard to listen to though!
00:00 Hey everybody I’m Robert!
00:05 What is today’s video?
00:41 apex rentals…
01:06 apex hotel…
01:36 Taking a trip down memory lane…
02:50 Having no plan?!
03:32 Our goal with apex.
03:48 The evolution of apex.
05:16 Coping with high demand.
07:43 Trying to avoid disappointment
08:21 No more taxi?!
09:02 The big turning point…
10:30 We miss the OGs!
11:20 Welcome to Disneyland!
12:51 Tainted taxi - balancing expectations
14:02 A sigh of relief!
15:17 Looking back in hindsight
16:07 Our rentals blew up!!!
17:30 Seasonal issues.
18:06 More, more, more
20:08 Enough is enough? Making a hard decision.
22:13 The future of apex…
24:19 I’m selling my cars?

I think I can speak for all of the lovely people I’ve had the chance to work with during my time at Apex, when I say that I’m proud to have been part of the adventure while it lasted. Some of the most exhilarating times of my life thus far, whether it was on track, in the office with the team, in the yard with the customers, or behind the camera. So grateful to have been able to provide a crazy experience to countless of likeminded people, and meet all of you. I’m really excited to see what’s next, and I can’t wait to come back up there to visit what will become of Apex. 🚙 Great video, Robert. Good that you’re keeping Tom busy. See you soon. 📸

Apex it's a special place. In 2022 I went to the Nurburgring for the first time. I was quite lost where to go or how to behave around there. My first thought was "go to Apex"! It was more or less like a safe space to me, the team was super kind and explained to me everything. That's Apex. At that time, I left you a diecast of a orange Ford Maverick as a gift (hope you received). Greetings from Brazil!

After all this years, I still consider myself a part of the Apex team and will always do, it’s one of the things that I am most proud of and both the company and the people will be in my heart forever. We created so many memories between us, so much laughter, and even more than that, we made dozens of thousands of people happy on and off track. I am extremely proud to have been a part of it and all the people I’ve worked with. We had our up’s and downs but we always made the best of it. And will always forever be grateful for everyone that visited and commemorated with us, all the pictures taken throughout, and all the challenges we overcome over the years. Looking forward to see all of you soon. Fantastic video Robert! See you soon. ❤️

In 2019 I got a road trip through Germany with a lap in the F80 as the main attraction as a birthday gift. As a motor head that was a huge bucket list item and surpassed all my expectations. What you at Apex offered was truly meaningful and I respect the will to keep the core values. I'm planning to do a university exchange semester in Germany in 2025 and revisit Nürburg and get to drive a lap as well as riding.

Scaling up the business is a good research area, and a lot to unpack there. A lot of research has been done already, but not a lot of awareness. Everyone just rushes to make the business big, and sell. The engineering consultant company I was working as a junior, very intentionally stopped growing beyond 100 employees. That’s where you need to completely change management structure, and approach, and lot of companies don’t survive that.

I would leave out the bit about why the taxi business closed. If someone's buying your product, their motivation for doing so shouldn't matter.

@@mmmmmmmmmmmmmmm420 If you feel like you are working really hard and exposing yourself to financial risk for customers who can't appreciate that, or even appreciate the experience they are getting, it must be frustrating. Especially when they were turning away real enthusiasts to make space. From a pure business perspective, one persons money is as good as the next persons, but this isn't a straight forward retail business selling products off a shelf. This business sells experiences and requires personal interaction with the customers. I appreciate how open and honest Robert was about the taxi business.

Thank you for your honest update Robert. My journey started when I was searching for Škoda Nurburgring videos, and I stumbled across Mishas channel and by association... Apex. Your set up has inspired me to re visit, I haven't been since 2019, mainly due to covid, upgrade the car following Mishas advice and in line with the advice you give, finally take the plunge and move to RLP, hopefully the Eifel. The UK is no longer a place that welcomes petrolheads. I'll be along once i get everything into gear.

Good luck to everyone that is moving on or staying it’s been a pleasure to feel part of the family you’ve built at apex even though I’ve only visited once in the early days! I have nothing but respect for you Robert. Honesty and transparency is harder than it seems to most. I was hoping to rent from you this year, but these past few videos make it clear on your reasons. Glad to hear you take pride in your work. I booked for two days this year when I will be coming out in case it is closed one day. We can only hope!

Amazing experience and glad I got to meet you all before it ended.. I could not have asked for a better ride on the ring.. It was immediately obvious you guys were there to live out your dreams rather than to get rich off of wealthy foreigners.. Thanks for making me and my wife feel like family and that trip will always be the top of the bucket list being checked off.. Thanks Apex..

Thank you Robert for such an honest and frank account of what it’s really like to run a modern service based business within the motorsport genre. Fascinating insight and I can fully appreciate your comments on knowing when to say is the right time to evolve or adapt your core business culture. I wish you all the successes in the future with Apex and look forward to more great content and updates from you and the team. 🏆🥇

I'm glad this channel has come alive again. I like your honest views on cool cars and the fact that you don't put them on a pedestal. And you talk about their shortcomings. I'm looking forward to seeing the videos of the cars being built. I know it's not feasible, but it would be interesting to do comparison videos. For example, how do the KW vs Bilstein vs Ohlins suspension stand on the same car. I haven't found anything like that on the internet. But in the mountain bike world it is usual and it is possible to read a comparison review of the suspension.

Tier 1!! Informative and inspirational. I still look back at your tire video from years back. How you rated each of the compounds used at Apex and your personal experiences. Has helped me shape my own perspectives on building my cars. +1 on all the deep dives on rental, taxi, finance videos I would love to see more updated technical videos like tire compounds, suspension etc!

Glad you enjoyed the Tyre video! I’m always amazed at how many people reference that. Not sure how to top it. Lol. We have a lot of plans in coming on the exact topics you mentioned as well

Looking forward to seeing some of these new builds! Understand the chaos definitely removes the fun from something you enjoy, turns it into more of a chore.

Thx robbert to always be so honest with us, I have been following you since the build-up of Apex and I have never seen such a beautiful team and/company that are so honest and so open... it's a pity that you are stopping with the rental cars, but I understand you also too much is too much, it's not just the income and so on, it's also a team you have to take care of :) Whatever your plans are with Apex, I trust that everything will turn out well

Thanks Robert ! This was very interesting, again. Since been a regular at the Ring since 2000 I have seen a lot of changes there, whether at the TF, OGP and more. Some better and some not so good. Keep up the good work !

Great to get caught up and exciting to hear about the future. I still dream of getting there and doing laps and visiting the gang of Apex folks I’ve come to know trough the KZfaq. I will absolutely want to stay at Apex hotel so regardless of who’s car I eventually get to experience the ring with I will certainly get to enjoy taking in the happy and relaxed atmosphere around Apex. Good to see you again Robert and hey you’re looking very healthy and relaxed these days so your on the 🏁!

Yup, I do miss the OG Apex just via social media! The vibe changed and I’m so much respect to you guys for realizing and addressing that! To man up and say this isn’t what it was intended to be! You guys have proved you’ll are beyond a rental business having great cars ♥️ Top tier fan of Apex, which made me love the ring!

Probably the only time I know for sure I'm going to sit through a half-hour video and watch and enjoy the entire thing is when You are sitting in front of the camera. Thank you for the clear-up. One complaint is have is the title of the video. It really had me. This surely isn't a fall. I was introduced to you through Misha's channel back when he had below 50k in subs. It was the Christmas of 2017 and I remember watching almost all the videos of the hotel Rebuilding and the Barn's transformation. I never had the chance to come and see you in person but I was going through terrible times back then and your content really made my life better. So you are my family tbh. So, looking forward to seeing you keep being "one of the best car content creators on the internet". (that was a line I used in my #lifewithapex entry video). Greetings from Tehran.

Robert welcome back I have been following you and Mischa for a long time and can appreciate your business decision. To do a lap of the ring is a bucket list item for me especially as a fellow gear head. Please do a video on the cost of a rental car at the ring, explaining the nuisances of insurance. Having watched all of the videos over the years I understand the cost involved in repairing the barriers at the ring, always felt when I looked at pricing was out of my budget so a video breaking it all down would be appreciated. I look forward to watching all the car builds you do going forward, all the best for 2024 and beyond.
