fun fact: virginia's 14 points at halftime matches the notoriously low scoring Virginia Tech vs NC State game from 2019 in terms of losing team's first half points.

Good job using Ken-Pom for your stats and reasoning. Stats don’t play the games, players do. Let me help you out a little bit on where Virginia is right now. The Tournament runs they had from 2014 - 2016, they had an inside presence on both ends of the floor. Akil Mitchell, Darin Atkins for defense, Anthony Gill for offense. In 2017, it was much like this year, they were young and only had London Perrantes and a bunch of outside unreliable scorers. They had a guy Austin Nichols transfer in and he would have been the inside presence they needed, but he got kicked out of school. The National Champions on this roster were freshmen and sophomores. 2018, The young class came of age and found that inside presence in DeAndre Hunter. Hunter hurt his wrist in the ACC tournament and didn’t play in the UMBC upset. Had, he played, things may have been different. That team was the most efficient team Tony Bennett has had at UVA. They were satisfying to watch. See the Duke game. 2019, Diakite emerged as a second option on offense and the dominating presence on defense they needed to win it. 2020, heavy turnover and COVID. 2021, even more turnover and this was the beginning of UVA not having a dominant scorer on the inside. Jay Huff was supposed to be that, but he was better suited as a stretch. The 2021 team was a great offensive team, but bad defensively because it was made up of transfers who are NBA players, Sam Hauser, Tre Murphy but they had no time to grasp the defensive concepts and once again, there was no inside presence on the offensive end. 2022, lots of roster turnover and once again, no inside presence on either end of the floor. Jayden Gardner was a transfer brought in for inside scoring, but he was undersized. 2023, much more of the same no inside presence and all the players 6-8 and above, as average as they were, graduated or transferred out except Ryan Dunn. So this year again, no size at all in the inside and the numbers show it. Bad defense, bad rebounding, no points in the paint. So for Virginia, it’s not a system problem, it’s a personnel problem. To be deliberate on the offensive end and stingy on the defensive end, a dominant presence on the interior is needed and they haven’t had one since 2020. An inside presence gets you two points when you need them and stabilizes the game when the jumpers aren’t falling.

I couldn't agree more with this. I have been telling people this for a long time, Virginia's bigs get no love in the system largely in part to the great shooters that have come through under Tony Bennett (Joe Harris, Malcom Brogden, Kyle Guy, Trey Murphy, Isaac Mckneely, ect...) but they are so important for that system to operate. Also, Virginia was really banged up in the 16 seed lose. Wilkens, Hall, Guy, and Jerome were playing through injures and Hunter was out. That doesn't justify the loss, but it does rationalize it some. It looks like UVA has tried to recruit and transfer in some good talented size this off season, so nobody be surprised if Tony and company have a good year. Will depend largely on how quickly they pick up the defensive scheme but on a good note it will be a young team and If Tony can keep them together, they could set-up some good years to come.

A couple of things, 1) UVa was without the best player on thr team against umbc. 2) UVa had done something completely different than the ACC, they win in a different style. 3) Wahoo-Wa.

95% of teams would trade everything for a Natty. Virginia isn’t some blue blood, just a team with a unique style that works well when they have decent at worst offensive players and not their offensive equivalent of a JUCO squad. There is not a single player on that squad that can generate offense single-handedly, due to transfers and busts out of the portal. An offensive change is likely necessary, however anyone that watched this team play knew that when they would lose they lost big time. An unfortunate end but a predictable one. Will be very interesting to see how the offense changes.

This video is a joke. They had a down year and a very bad game. Coaches are adjusting to the transfer portal and NIL. TB actually got a lot out of this time to finish 3rd in the ACC. They tied for the conference regular season last year and have a solid recruiting class. They have the best record in the ACC over the last 10 years. Kentucky is 1-4 in the last four tournaments. Should they fire Cal? Fans are ridiculous. If you don't like UVA then do not watch.

Longtime UVa fan: It's definetly heartbreaking. It feels like we sold our soul to win the national championship in 2019 and its depressing to see now. It felt like the stars finally aligned , and despite having the pieces there to build another championship roster stubbornness, and bad luck have ruined what could've been something special in C'ville.

It is painful to watch a game with Virginia. It is such a slow down game, the opposition ends up playing a similar game. The problem with Virginia, is stars do not want to play that style of play. Even when they won it all, they only had 2 players that were somewhat stars. They just was so good at running their defense and offense. My Tarheels beat Virginia at Virginia this year. First time in a dozen years or so. Such a tough place to play when they good. This is Bennett's offense. He may lose his job if he cannot get better athletes.

The UMBC game was not out of nowhere and you are being disingenuous. They lost their best player and biggest offensive threat prior to that game. You have a team that reiles heavily on defense and its best offensive player is out with injury? If he had palyed, that is likely a win. SO, I wouldn't call that out of nowhere.
