Zeinab Badawi travels to the rarely visited country of Eritrea and neighbouring Ethiopia to chart the rise of the kingdom of Aksum.
Described as one of the four greatest civilisations of the ancient world Zeinab examines archaeological remains in both countries dating back many hundreds of years before our common era.
She explains how the kings of Aksum grew rich and powerful from their control of Red Sea trade and how they were one of the first civilisations in the world that officially embraced Christianity in the fourth century. Also find out why the Queen of Sheba and the secret of the Ark of the Covenant are so fundamental to Ethiopia’s history.

The video is about the ancient kingdom of Aksum in present day Ethiopia. Forgive me, but I am unaware of any specific destruction of Aksum historical documents. It is an underresearched piece of ancient history in need of a fair amount of archeology. So, what are you referring to exactly?

Thank you for the documentary Zeinab Badawi , BUT your history is distorted by the Amhara kings (and their follower’s) fake stories. Kingdom of Aksum was a civilization of Tigrayan people of Tigray region (Northern Ethiopia) and our same ethnic brothers of southern Eritrea ( www.britannica.com/topic/Tigray-central-Eritrean-people ). At the time of Aksum, we spoke the Ge’ez language which is the direct ancestor of Tigrigna language (and the direct ancestor of the Tigre language of northern Eritrea also). Amharic is a very recent language when compared to Tigrigna & Tigre (which are much older once). Amharic is not so similar to Ge'ez & not a direct decedent of the Ge’ez language (like Tigrigna & Tigre). Though, new Amhara kings some 350 years after the fall of Kingdom of Aksum claimed they had blood descent from kings of Aksum (it is obviously a fake story made-up to glorify themselves); it was unscientific (these Amhara kings don't even have any relatives in Axum, since they were southern Ethiopia people like Haile-Selassie of Harare for example, and the others from Shewa). Is summary, Kingdom of Aksum was a civilization of the current Tigrayan people (Agazians) who are now divided between Tigray region of Ethiopia and the southerner highlands of Eritrea. Our capital was the city of Axum (in Tigray region) and our trade sea-port used to be Adulis (current Eritrean red-sea port territory). But Amhara kings have been massacring Tigrayans for centuries in-order to pretend to be the direct decedents of Aksumites (and the founders of Ethiopia). For example king Haile-Selassie killed over 100,000 Tigryans by refusing to send emergency food aid to Tigray province even though he had the money during the 1958 famine of Tigray;(it was around 20 perćent of the Tigryans' population at the time who died of this systematic famine). Later on, the Amhrar president Mengistu Haile-Mariam also used the 1985 famine to kill 1.2 million people (mostly in Tigray province). All these murders was to steal Tigryans' history about Aksumit Kingdom. References of the famines can be found on the reference list of the Wiki page:- en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Famines_in_Ethiopia

@@orionejigu2580 according to language studies, Amhara people (and their Amharic language) is a mix with Oromo. Even though Amhara people call Oromos as GALA, they are themselves are one. You can see this from the grammar of the Amharic language, which is clearly taken from the Oromo language.

Though, new Amhara kings some 350 years after the fall of Kingdom of Aksum claimed they had blood descent from kings of Aksum (it is obviously a fake story made-up to glorify themselves); it was unscientific (these Amhara kings don't even have any relatives in Axum, since they were southern Ethiopia people like Haile-Selassie of Harare for example, and the others like king Yekuno-Amlak & the "so called Minilik II"" were from Shewa). Our capital was the city of Axum (in Tigray region) where city of Axum is one of the few cities in the world that as been contentiously inhabited for the last 2000 years; And our trade sea-port used to be Adulis (current Eritrean red-sea port territory). References of the famines can be found on the reference list of the Wiki page:- en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Famines_in_Ethiopia The scientific encyclopedia ( www.britannica.com/topic/Tigray-central-Eritrean-people ) says:- "The Tigray are descendants of a Semitic people who intermixed with the Cushitic inhabitants of the region and founded the Christian kingdom of Aksum, which had its capital in the historic region of Tigray." Our Cushitic brothers we intermixed with are the Agaw/Qimant people who created the Lalibela churches & civilization during their Zagwe dynasty. And again, you Amhara extremists now genocide Qimant people since you want to falsely claim their Lalibela history as your own. As the great historian Ivan Van Sertima once said: “Africa is a shattered Star”. It is the task of this generation of Africans - on the Continent and in the Diaspora - to pick up the pieces, and play their part in putting this great Star back together again, so that it will shine brilliantly once more ... in the centuries to come.

I'm from Ethiopia and grew up with the stories presented in this doco. What kept me glued on the screen throughout the program is Zeina's (the presenter) sense of humour and her take on the unique culture of the region. Zeina immersed herself in the cultural, eating the food with locals, attending church ceremonies with priests and asking the important questions along the way. As someone who has watched and listened to BBC for years, I knew Zeina Bedawi as BBC anchor presenting news in the studio and programs like 'the interview' now known as 'hard talk'. In this documentary as a presenter, Zeina showed another angle of her journalism which is as great as the ones we have known her for. I have noticed an element of her hardtalk in some of the questions she asked 😂. I loved the jokes she cracked as well 😅😅. Thank you Zeina Bedawi!!!

Eritreans have nothing in common with the majority Amharic and Oromifa speakers of Ethiopia. Eritrea and Eritreans are not children whom you Amharas think you can discard and take back whenever you want. Wake up and smell the coffee and stop claiming Eritrea. Dear Mrs. Zeinab Badawi .... you will definitely remembered in the history of humanity. You have done a nobel documentary that doesn't only offer a contribution to the evolution of humanity, but furthermore, offers a critical evidence that many generations have vanished due to greed for money that escalated to wars and extinction in many forms. This is a starting point to alarm the current generation about the future of humanity. When does that day come when educational institutions, and the world media show the benefits of peaceful coexistence. The humanity is quite thankful to you Mrs.Zeinab..

The Kushite rule began in Nubia after the collapse of the Bronze Age. Kush was stationed in Napata (now Karima, Sudan) during its first phase. The Kingdom of Cush became strong culturally, economically, politically and militarily. After the control of Kashta (“the Kush”) extended to Upper Egypt in the eighth century BC and his successors were able to control Lower Egypt after that, the kings of Kush also became pharaohs of the twenty-fifth family in Egypt for about a century, until they were defeated by the modern Assyrian Empire under the rule of Ashurbanipal, the first pharaoh of Egypt, I smiled them out. During the classical antiquity, the Kushite capital was located in Meroe. In early Greek geography, the Meroitic kingdom was known as Ethiopia. The Kingdom of Kush and its capital, Meroe, continued until the fourth century AD, then weakened and disintegrated due to internal problems and the destruction of the capital by the Kingdom of Axum. Thereafter, the Nubians established three Christian kingdoms, namely Nubatia, Maqra and Alwa.

Her history is sadly distorted by the Amhara kings (and their follower’s) fake stories. Is summary, Kingdom of Aksum was a civilization of the current Tigrayan people (Agazians) who are now divided between Tigray region of Ethiopia and the southerner highlands of Eritrea. Our capital was the city of Axum (in Tigray region) where city of Axum is one of the few cities in the world that as been contentiously inhabited for the last 2000 years; And our trade sea-port used to be Adulis (current Eritrean red-sea port territory). All these murders were mainly to weaken & eliminate Tigryans and then completely steal their history about Aksumit Kingdom. Many thieves want to steal gold & such, but Amhara extremists want steal others' history, very ugly!

Thank you for your dedication in bringing to light the richness of pre-Western history and civilization of East Africa. To all that Zeinab Badawi has reported on different episodes of History of Africa, I really appreciate all the journeys she has taken to provide astonishing visibility to our bizarre history as a continent, country or nation level. I am not in position to criticize or raise vivid evidence that, the report has no totality and depth but I feel aches deep in my heart that she didn't make all inclusive reporting. With all my aches buried deep in my souls I want to put it as follows borrowing an African saying: " The narrative will always glorify the hunter until the lion itself learns to Write." The Kushites are presently found in Ghana. I am a Kushite by ancestry as found in the Ghanaian Twi version of the Bible. Zephaniah Chapter 1 mentions the son of Cushi, which translated is Kusi in the Twi language. A lot of people are called Kusi, myself included. The first king of the Ga tribe was called Nii Ayi Kushi, and my cousin from the Ewe tribe is called Kusitor. All these tribes celebrate yearly festivals claiming Ethiopian ancestry. This is interesting history.

Actually, you can tell them to go to hell , if you have access and time, I hate them like so many other Ethiopians. What I was trying to say was the history of Ethiopia is so rich and maybe it’s a bit difficult to present in a short documentary, that’s all. Don’t rush for negative comment before understanding the point, if something isn’t clear, pause a question for a clarification, I hope that is what we call it a civilized communication.
