K-pop fans are typically young individuals. BTS' fans are unique because they cross generations of ages. BTS brings people together not only from different cultures but also ages. To be able to appreciate and rejoice in a group with other fans from such a variety of ages is an amazing experience.

You guys are missing the point by a country mile, lol. Yes, kpop companies have rules as far as a schedules and whatnot. But this series is showing how BTS and their company eschewed a lot of those rules and "norms" to forge their own path. From the very beginning, BTS had a LOT more freedom than most of their peers, especially when it came to writing lyrics/music, producing beats, etc. Those are the things you need to watch for, IMO. What the "system" was doing versus what Big Hit/BTS were doing.

Oh, man. You went into this not knowing what it is? This is a 21-part fan-made documentary series that chronicles how BTS started and started gaining popularity and also shows you a bit of how K-pop was done during the time of their rise and what makes them different. I believe the timeline goes almost up until 2018. It is EXTREMELY well done. Each episode (except for some of the first few episodes) has both a Deleted Scenes and Bonus Content video as well that provides more clips from around the same era as the corresponding episode if you want to see more. I'm so glad you stumbled across it!! It is a bit of a lengthy journey, because it IS 21 episodes long, but it is full to the brim with information on their early years and their beginning for you guys if you want to continue it. It is well worth the time. Keep in mind that some things in here are giving context on how K-Pop itself was during this time, not necessarily how BTS is. It tries to show some of the CONTRAST between how other idol groups were treated and how BTS was. So, when you disagreed there about it not being a "young" audience, that is talking more about how K-pop itself was viewed at the time, as something for young people. We all know BTS has a much wider audience than that, but it hasn't really always been like that. Same with the extreme restrictions and planning. Most K-pop groups of the time were extremely regulated, and while BigHit and BTS DID still have some of that because that's the way the system was at the time, it was certainly much more lax for BigHit than other companies. BTS certainly had more freedom than most of their peers at the time. Funny thing is, I believe Jin was actually the maknae (youngest) of his biological family, so when he was cast and became a part of BTS, all of a sudden he was the Hyung (older brother) and instead of others taking care of him, he had to take care of the other members. And he was such a great hyung to them all. BTS had a whole Debut album that released June 13th 2013 called "2 Cool 4 Skool". The main title track (debut single) was called 'No More Dream' (which I don't think you've reacted to yet, if I'm not mistaken. Just so you know if you do watch it, the official MV on the Bangtan TV channel doesn't have subtitles. It's basically the only one that doesn't, but there are other versions out there that put the subtitles on it.) The second title track was called 'We Are Bulletproof Pt 2'. (Part 1 was actually a pre-debut track that was made before the group lineup was finalized, so it actually included trainees who didn't make it into the final group. A lot of people are curious why they seemed to have started with Pt 2. That's why. But part 1 is still pretty damn good and you can definitely find it on the internet. I think YT even has a clip of the full OT7 version of it that they performed at a concert a few times.) I hope you guys decide to continue the series, if not right now, then eventually. I highly, HIGHLY recommend it. This series is a really good chronological look at their journey. And the Bonus Content and Deleted Scenes videos are super fun extra content as well if you choose to check them out. (Deleted scenes start from Chapter 1 and Bonus Content starts with Chapter 3. Both are in playlists on the Rise of Bangtan Channel). Borahae!! 💜💜💜

They are even younger than they say on here because using Korean age, they say 16, it means 14 or 15 in International age. This doc does a great job showing that Bighit treated them better than some agencies would have. They got to write their own stuff sooner. They didn’t pit them against each other and I think that’s why they are still together. So good.

But they did let go of trainees. It is even part of lyrics like "Run BTS". There is a short documentary of the last trainee they send away. Back than they couldn't afford to keep the trainees that didn't make it. Supreme Boi choose to become a BH producer - I don't think he was kicked from the group but he didn't want to be part of it. (there is also the former trainee that killed himself and while he was an a* I'm also sad about it) Today they keep the trainees except if the trainee wants to go. People are still hoping that some of the trainees from "Trainee A" will debut in another HYBE group.

One thing to note about this series, the way it's structured is to show how most of Kpop operates and works and then they'll show clips of BTS usually showing the difference as the often fell out of the status quo. So you would see other groups talking about how miserable it was to be in a group but then it's juxtaposed against BTS actually enjoying spending time together. It's nothing against other groups of course. It's human nature to get sick of seeing the same people day in and day out when you wake up, go to school sometimes, go to work, practice, eat, and get ready to sleep again. It's natural to get agitated and the high stress of being a trainee can make people even more sensitive to their frustration. BTS is actually the odd ones for how much they adore each other and actively chose to live with or near each other long after they needed to. Most groups are glad to separate when they have the freedom to live alone so they can have breathing room. Living together isn't what made BTS so close. All idols have to do that at some point and a lot of them over the decades have hated each other behind the scenes. It all depends on the group. There are a lot that have existed.

This is a great series! Aneesa (the creator of The Rise of Bangtan) shared that she has been working on this series (her labor of love) for over 3 years! She is taking viewer on a journey step-by-step from BTS' perspective not looking back on their days but living through them (with them). She edits their content to allow BTS to speak their thoughts, through their experiences at the time because BTS has been documenting themselves since BEFORE their debut, so there is A LOT of material to edit down to tell their story! She also gives an overview of the KPop history for those who are not familiar with the industry. She uses clips from different video clips of other idols/ journalists interviews to try to give a broader perspective of the industry. Her skill as a professional video editor really shines through. Amazing work! I think many ARMY really like this series (besides it being extremely well made), she doesn't try to interpret what "she thinks" BTS is trying to say, she just shows the viewers exactly what they said and shared about what their thoughts were at the time. She is an "OG" KPop fan and BTS fan since pre-debut! She also shared that BTS has been the light in her darkness for many years now. *(Cr: "FY" on yt)* I think it's important to notice the differences between BTS' worries and the other trainees worries. BTS' were worried about their own personal skills (not dancing well enough, song worries, etc), about not getting attention when they debut due to their small company, not having money, etc. While the other trainees seem to be living in fear of being cut from the company at any moment if they make one mistake, worrying about weight quotas, etc. BTS stayed until late hours because they WANTED to, while the other trainees HAD to. Obviously BTS had things they had to do too, they could've not made it to debut as Jimin almost did due to short training, but instead of using that as a fear to hold over them Bighit seemed to use it to encourage them to work harder and improve themselves. BTS were allowed to make mistakes without worrying they'd be thrown out of the company. I'm very glad that they all signed with Bighit, and that Bighit has caused a shift in the Kpop industry, lots of newer companies are giving their groups more freedom and treating them better due to BTS' success. These companies see that idols don't need to be punished and forced to do things in order to succeed, BTS are proof that freedom and happiness should be the most important thing. *(Cr: "Shannon" on yt)* Now plz understand this 1st & 2nd episode shows two sides, one is typical k-pop system and how the labels/industry work, whereas subtle hints of BTS and bighit being contradictory different is shown, BTS is different from other K-pop groups and BigHit is different from other idol music companies. These first few episodes can be misleading because it makes you think BTS management follows these guidelines the other idol members from other companies are talking about, but BTS and BigHit don't do those things. Notice how when it is said idols don't have a lot of creative freedom, you see Namjoon and Yoongi writing lyrics, or when it says idols have phone bans or something, you see the BTS members on their phones, or how when idols say they aren't allowed to go outside the dorm, you see Yoongi walking around freely. It can be a confusing thing for new ARMY to make note of, but PLEASE notice these differences. It is vital to how BigHit runs differently, and therefore why BTS is so different from other idol groups from the very start. *(Cr: "Kayla Kulik" on yt)*

As you watch this documentary, you will realize that bts were never "ordinary idols", they were denied by the hiphop world and kpop world from the beginning. "Nobody came from that low, and nobody got as high as they did." For how small his company was, his success was called into question more than once. And everything that a Big3 idol (YG, JYP and SM) does once, they had to do it ten times. That infustry belittled them a thousand times and now they use them as a face for everything. Thank you for giving yourself the opportunity to know the story of improvement and perseverance of my boys. They worked hard to show the world that they are true artists, that they love and live through music, and that they deserve all the success they get. They are not the most important group today for nothing. Sorry for my bad english, I'm argentinian. Borahae 💜💜💜.

I think that part about a generally young audience is because most K-pop groups actually do have just a young audience. Aside from the the groups that had their fans already grow with them, BTS does actually have a wide range of fans and a really high rate of fan conversion, that's why we have a lot of older ARMYs too. This isn't so common with other groups. Especially at the time where that clip was lifted from. Also in SK at that time, Idol music was mainly considered "kids music" and wasn't something most adults would get into. Hence you also have why 'idol music' was looked down upon since it was dismissed as kids music. At the same time, you can understand why since BTS was the outlier in that they wrote music with more substance and meaningful themes, while most groups at the time were not really known for content with substance. It's easy to understand why "idol music" wouldn't appeal to older audiences. Or at least for a stigma to exist.

I think the nuance you might have misunderstood and that the series was trying to point out is how BTS from the start was disruptive compared to what was happening on kpop scene, they were born and developed in a slightly different context than other regular K-pop groups! Different in the approach (didn't want to look unattainable but close by filming their vlog), reaching to different audiences, had rules but not as harsh as regular trainee systems and based on the proactive decisions and willingness of the members (they were still very restricted and received strict dance training especially)!

Hello, Just an FYI - KPOP in general has a young audience. And when BTS started out, their age demographic was teens to twenty somethings. After they debuted, and they were reaching a global audience, they had all ages, gender, races, etc. They were not the norm in KPOP. They were musical artists, not just KPOP, and they were spreading messages that were changing the world. That is why they became as big as they are. By the way, I'm BTS ARMY, and i'm not a "KPOP FAN" I'm a "BTS ARMY" there is a difference. Remember for South Korea, the age difference is 1 to 2 years, so when they say they are 20, they are really 18 or 19. Jungkook was 13 when he joined BTS, and he was 15 when they debuted in 2013. He was just a young boy. He graduated middle school, and entered high school in his debut year, and he had already been living away from his family since age 13. That's a big deal. Also, JIN was 18 when he joined, and 20 when they debuted. He was the youngest in his family, but the oldest "brother" in BTS. It took some getting used to for him. Jimin was 16/17 in his debut year, just like V. RM was 18, and J-Hope was 19. They all came from different areas of South Korea and had to live together away from their families. They developed a strong brotherhood and became family. K-ARMY in the early years were an integral part of their journey and their success. They helped to spread the word to I-ARMY's and they supported BTS through their early years. The bond between BTS and ARMY is strong and started from their beginnings, even before debut and before ARMY was official on July 9th, 2013. Their debut song was just part of what they were working on .They had an actual album they released. And as soon as they were done with their first album promotions, they were already working on the next one. They had to run to survive and make it in the IDOL industry.

Thanks for pointing the importance to not confuse between BTS and Kpop journeys which are for most parts different... I think this is the major negative of this serie, the creator let a blurred line without clearly stating or showing that BTS were part of every decision related to their lives or art, maybe because the creator is a kpop fan herself... The dieting in their case wasn't because the company but because of the Korean society norms at the time, and not only for their weight but also their skin since 3 of them were still teenages when they debuted or even young adults... Also BigHit didn't have tons of trainees, they were 9 and only 1 was eliminated and the other left because he didn''t want to be part of an idol group (of course he lied later saying it was coz of rules).

While BTS do have rules they need to follow, this series really does highlight the difference between the other companies and BigHit at the time. While they did have freedom it is important to note that they used that "freedom" to hone their craft and became even more determined to make it to the top and be the best in every aspect of song, rap and performance. This is a great docu-series but this first episode is a little misunderstood sometimes. BTS of course faced hardship as trainees. It was competitive, they had tough schedules, they had rules...but they were not facing the excessively brutal conditions that trainees at the Big 3 faced (YG, JYP, SM). BigHit was broke but they believed in nurturing artists. Bang PD required that his staff not speak down to the artists, when Yoongi got injured at his part time job that he took to help pay for school, instead of firing him, BigHit paid for his education so he didn't have to work, and they also didn't have to take on a ton of debt to pay to be a trainee like idols at big companies did (BigHit eliminated trainee debt and was among the first to require cultural competency training and mental health support to trainees). The boys got to write their music, contribute to what they were doing, they had their scheduled practices but they voluntarily went above and beyond. I'm not saying they didn't have any rules, of course they did. But it definitely was a different case than the big companies. The creator of this series intended to juxtapose BTS' experience from that of the rest of the kpop world because a lot of people believe that the difference in philosophies about what a kpop artist is, was key to Bangtan really rising above. But some people miss that. The horror stories you saw in this doc (which aren't even the worst that some trainees were subjected to) do not apply to BTS. They had their own struggles for being outsiders and bucking the system. But being forced to have plastic surgery or locked in a practice room until they lost 5lbs were not among them.

Thanks... This is a very important point... I think since the creator is herself a kpop fan in general, she used in some way BTS to highlight kpop and other groups which was a bit disappointing for me... She even in some episodes twisted some contexts and lyrics... But the serie is still enjoyable, you just have to really know BTS''s story to not be confused... Thats why I always advice to be familiar first with original BTS and BigHit contents, read their interviews or even fact-checking the sources before going to fan edits.

Aneesa, who made this did an amazing job. This was her passion project. It took her about three years to outline and storyboard the series. She is a professional film editor, and she works in LA. Just a heads up on the ages. The members are giving you their Korean age. You need to subtract one or two years Most of the members were born September-December, so subtract two years. J-Hope and Suga were born in February and March respectively, so usually you can just subtract one year. Korean age is counted by years you have lived in, not by the sets of 365 days you have lived. V was born December 30 1995. That was the first year that he lived in, so he was one. Two days later, January 1st, 1996, that is the second year he lived in, so he was now two. When the boys debuted in 2013, Jin was 20 and JK was 15. (JK auditioned in the spring of 2011, and moved away from home and into the dorm in June 2011; he was 13.)

Just a small add-on... South Korea did away with the Korean age system in June 2023 so whenever they talk about age from now on it should be international age. 💜

@imajinallthepurple true. However, culture takes longer to die. Older generations still use the lunar calendar. Using counting years (Korean) and not full years (international) will probably still determine hierarchy and verb forms. Korea has been using international age for military and government documents (pensions, driver's license, etc) for several decades.

@@tammarabg8174 They know they have a lot of international fans to whom it's confusing and they've corrected themselves on it recently so that's why I believe they'll make an extra effort about it going forward. It's actually through them mentioning it that I learned about the new law in the first place and looked it up. BTS educates again. 😄👍 I think you're absolutely right about the respect aspect and while I do think the Korean blind/automatic respect is wrong, tbh I also think western countries (like mine) could learn something from them and incorporate a little more respect for our elders. Very interesting is the member of Super Junior talking about the group that will rise to dominate the west in the introduction. That group was put together by another label to challenge and take over from where BTS was really starting to rise in the West and it had major backing from a western label, so he is really talking about his own group there, but they failed and BTS continued to rise. For fans who know that history, that was a nice sneaky intro 😂

So just a few things there are K-pop groups out there were the members dont get on but BTS are the top of the pile for the way they all love each other, they worked hard on that as they are all soooooooooooo different to each other. Jimin went on a severe diet because he was criticised for his lovely chubby cheeks ( by people online) so he decided he wanted to become one of the "better looking members" they are all good looking to me and what makes them so attractive is their work ethic, their honesty and their love of what they do and the love they have for us ARMY.

Please look into Seo Taiji more. He's credited as the pioneer of Kpop, but the topics he sang about were miles beyond what Kpop evolved into. He kind of handed the torch to BTS because they were singing about heavier more relatable topics as well. He asked BTS to do a cover of one of his songs for an anniversary album, and had them as special guests at his 25th anniversary concert.

A couple of points I'm not entirely sure you caught : - Like you said BTS was originally supposed to be a rap group however when Bang PD changed the concept to an idol group early on only RM stayed on and the current group was formed around him. He took a lot of heat/hate from the rap community for "selling out" because of it. - K-pop *usually* attracts a primarily younger audience. BTS is the exception that stretches across multiple generations, very much due to their topics and lyrics. - Although BTS did have to follow some of the strict rules that usually apply to K-pop trainees/idols, like no dating for example, they were also given a lot of freedoms not common in the idol system. - When they were evaluating their pictures each member actually pointed to himself as the one who did best. 😂 (Except Jin who especially at that time had very little selfconfidence. He struggles with Impostor Syndrome.) 💜

RM was literay their first trainee. Even the first attempt(s) was/were formed around him. Suga already joined him in 2010 and J-Hope moved in I believe on december the 24th (DOPE Bangtan Bomb). In the new year a look at the finances made it clear that BH could not afford a Hiphop group. After dropping everything non-essential for a week people made a report what could make actually money: an Idol group. Shortly afterwards Jin and JK were - among others - recruited. V passed auditions in late summer of 2011 and Jimin in late spring 2012 (which is one of the reasons why Jimin had at the beginning so much trouble). A few months later the last non-debuting member was kicked (BH could not afford to keep trainees at that time).

I'm so glad that you guys started reacting to this amazing documentary series. I have watched each chapter many times, but I would still rewatch it every time someone reacted to it. This docu-series just made this 63 yrs old ARMY appreciate and love the members even more. Please note that the age the members mentioned on their vlog was the Korean age, which is different than the international age. Koreans are 1 yr old at birth and turned another yr older on Jan 1st the following year. For example, V was born on Dec 30/95 he's 2 yrs old on Jan 1st of 1996 when he's actually just 2 days old. On Jun 30 this year, the Korean government finally scrapped the Korean age system to align with the international age system. When BTS debuted on Jun 13, 2013, the age of each member was: Jin 20 Suga 20 JHope 19 RM 18 Jimin 17 V 17 Jungkook 15 Knowing their actual age made everything they did at such a young age even more impressive.

Hi, yes, just as you said in your reaction, I hope you eventually react to some of Seo Taiji, the Father of KPop. He was the influence & the impetus for the South Korean (SK) idol music business (aka KPop) to get started, however inadvertent it was. His band, "Seo Taiji & Boys", was what started that inspiration, of which the music style of that group was basically hiphop-rock, not just hiphop, because as said in TRoB, those kinds of music styles were still new back then in SK. However, Seo Taiji was already in the music business since the mid 1980's, especially as a guitar bassist for a little bit with the hair-metal band Sinawe. Now think about that, Seo Taijji, is first & foremost a rock & metal musician, yet KPop turned heavily into a pop & hiphop style genre of music, all because he was experimenting with hiphop. That is the irony of KPop, in that it was accidentally begun by a metal/rock musician, yet KPop isn't rock/metal. And something that you also have to be aware of, if it's not already obvious, is that KPop itself is really just modern western music adopted by SK. I hope you react to some songs/musicvideos of Seo Taiji & Boys of the early 1990's, as well as his metal music tracks from around the Y2K era, as well as some EDM/experimental tracks from the early 2000's. Taiji's music styles are just as diverse. One important thing to also know about Taiji is that he was really one of the prominent figures in SK music to have a lot of social commentary in his songs, to which this had gotten him censored at times, back in the early 1990's, when it was considered risky to do so. This is why BTS is important, because BTS also carried social awareness in their own songs. Other KPop groups try not to imbue socio-political messages in their songs because of that said risk & backlash. Seo Taiji has basically passed the torch/mantle to BTS in 2017, not only because BTS got huge but also because of their deep lyrical messages. If you want any recommendations for Seo Taiji stuff, please let me know.

@@wongpauline22 ... Taiji was supposedly going to do collabs with other KPop artists in those times, starting with BTS, but I think the pandemic messed that plan up. He has had some personal issues since then as well, such as an accident, iirc, not to mention possibly thinking about retirement. He got Covid himself but is better now. That's why he wasn't able to create a concert in 2022 for his 30th anniversary for his debut in the Taiji & Boys band which again pretty much invented KPop afterward. But things can change. He is still thinking on making a comeback, hopefully before thinking about retirement. Docskim himself, the keyboardist for Taiji for the past decade, then became the keyboardist at Hybe, was also about to retire, but working for Hybe & for BTS made him rethink about retirement. As Jessica said, you can find the link for the 25th anniversary Time Traveler 2017 concert. The entire 2.5 hours is at Taijji's official youtube channel SEOTAIJI. Unfortunately , it has no english captions. But you can also find some other channels making snippets of the concert & adding subtitles to them. But that is not the only concert on youtube. He also has his past other concerts here, such as Mobius & Quiet Night tours. He also had a symphonic-rock/metal mix concert with a royal philharmonic orchestra headed by Tolga Kashif in 2008. And many more. It would be great if he does a collab again with BTS in 2025 or later, when both of them make a comeback together. It would be cool to see BTS doing rock & metal music again, as that would make it full circle back to Taiji. And BTS would also be playing some instruments, because Taiji is also a multi-instrumentalist. That would help evolve & progress KPop from only being a singing + dancing platform into the formfactor of singing + instruments + choreo, which would again make BTS the pioneer, just as Taiji was. It would evolve KPop, turning it into something like the Jackson 5, who did all of that half a century ago.

So RM was only 17, Jin was only 19, and Jungkook was 13 when they all started training 😮 They grew up together, remember JK said he graduated Middle school....not High school....they did go to his High school graduation, but the one you see of RM and Suga and Jin talking about how cute he looks down in the audience was his Middle school graduation. He then went into High school. 😮 RM took on alot at that early age, they all did. Now you see why Army's are so in love with these boys and protective of them!!! So when the members mention their age you need to subtract 2 years for most people. Koreans counted the birth as 1 year old and the first new year for the child as 2 years old. So when a baby completes its first year they can be 3 years old. This was very confusing for non-Korean fans.

This docu don't show it very clearly but BTS is showed as a comparision to the typical kpop group. They worked hard but they weren't "manufactured". The company gave them freedome in a way. They just wanted to work hard. Remember to read comments cause it's really common in this series to talk about kpop industry but not mention that BTS was quite different. You will understand this when you see the relationship Bang PD and company stuff has with guys.

I would advise you to maybe listen to the music that is included in each episode before watching the episode. That way you can see their mindset and what they were talking about at that time with no spoilers. The only thing that didn't come off too well in this video was how they were trying to show the difference between BTS and all other groups. You see them wandering around, eating out, talking about writing and composing, things that other groups did not do.💜

This is a great series. I love how it showd the Kpop culture and how BTS grew out of that, but also being different that they came from a small company and one that LET them do their own work, and not limit them the way other bands were limited. It always gives me goosebumps seeing RM say he's ready and hoping for success, knowing how far they will come beyond anything they imagined. Also, when that one promoter says one day in next five years a band will come from Korea defying all the odds to be on top of Westerner charts too. And they edit back to BTS chants. Just a really well made documentary.

This series are very good. But we have to be aware that Big Hit/Hybe is not like other agencies the way they manage their artists. We cannot generalize. BTS label's mentality is unique because Bang PD (Bang Si-hyuk or Hitman Bang too) is a composer and producer more than a financial manager and he understands talent, artists mindset and their needs. 😊💜

Jhope didn't come in as a choregrapher, maybe you meant to say dance leader/main. He can remember the choreography the fastest. I feel pretty sure even if something is not right he will voice his opinion. He has helped RM, Suga, and Jin when needed. Son is their main choreographer. They also use different choreographers when needed. They are sent dance routines and it is just a matter of time when the dance fits the song.

If you haven’t done Your Eyes Tell or The Truth Untold I recommend them. Ballads. One is the vocal line, one is all 7. The live performances are amazing.

I really enjoy our reaction. By chance here, first time, as a Bts fan. A little something that is not said about Bang PD, the CEO, the producer... He used to be a producer in one of the big companies (JYP or YG, don't remember exactly), a successful one, that were the name "hitman" Bang came from. He left to start his own company do to disagreements about how the work with the artist, or the content in music should be, so he started small, but with big ideals. I would day he had a better relationship with his artists, but also demanded more. Not to say more work, cause all idols, trainees work hard, but more as in character, implication, commitment. Still, as he said, he couldn't make another group like Bts cause he doesn't know how Bts came out... It was the connection the guys formed amongst them (and I would say that mindset that RM has/has that was adopted by everyone, or the ambition that RM, Suga and JHope had, was contagious...)

I also mess up which label that was - only that he was there with his friend from the beginning when besides them only someone doing books was there. Bang usually says it was a fight about socks - when the two of them shared a room in the US for a time trying to connect their artists with the US music industry to create a synergy effect (they were ignored) - that drove him away and into creating a new label. Mind you his friend helped by giving im the chance to co-manage one of his artists.
