The Rise of Fake Gurus: The Dark Truth Behind Making MILLIONS from Online Courses.

You've seen them everywhere.
On the 3rd of September 2015, Tai Lopez released his infamous ‘Here in My Garage’ KZfaq Ad.
This single Ad created a wave of what some have described as fake gurus, selling you their courses and mastermind programs like no tomorrow with promises of ‘financial freedom’, ‘a laptop lifestyle’, and the possibility to ‘travel around the world’. Sounds great, right?
In this video I break down the business model of how to make millions from online courses using the methods that these fake gurus use, and expose the dark truth behind this rapidly growing industry.
DISCLAIMER: Look, I think online courses are brilliant. They helped me edit this video, learn about marketing, personal finance etc. But none of these courses promised me ‘financial freedom’, or a ‘laptop lifestyle'. These courses had set a clear expectation, and I received a clear result.

Step 1 - Pick Your Niche
This is where you get to choose the topic of your choice. Preferably it’s a fad, and something that could be promoted under the categories of wealth, or health, or anything that allows you to target people’s dreams.
Here are some of the most common niches used by a few well-known gurus…
Kevin David - Amazon FBA, Dropshipping.
Dan Lok - Sales.
John Crestani - Affiliate Marketing.
Iman Gadzhi - Digital Marketing Agency (otherwise called an SMMA - a term popularised by Tai Lopez).
Sam Ovens - Consulting.
Samuel Leeds - Real Estate Investing.
Step 2 - Create Your Course
Preferably you have some experience in your niche. In most cases the ideal route is to pick a niche, start a business in your niche and get a little success, then create your own online course - because after all, that’s where the real money is made.
If you don’t have any expertise, you can always hire an outside expert to give you a helping hand.
You see, the course isn’t what matters the most here, what matters the most is your online marketing for the course.
Step 3 - Market Your Course
This is the most important part of this business model. Without marketing your online course properly, you won’t be able to make a lot of money from it.
Start by running some advertisements on KZfaq, Instagram, Facebook etc, and begin by selling them a dream. Tell your audience that you were also broke and in debt, but after starting [insert niche here] you began making six figures, millions, travelling around the world, became financially free, have a laptop lifestyle, etc…
Tell them to join your free training - where your main goal isn’t to teach them anything, but to get them to ask more questions. Remind them of their dreams, remind them of your backstory, and finally go in for the hard sell where you create scarcity and a sense of urgency in order to get them to buy your ridiculously priced course RIGHT NOW.
Step 4 - Profit.
With the right marketing, you should now be seeing some of that sweet, sweet profit fly in from your online courses.
But why stop there? The real way to make millions from online courses is to create an entire ladder of products. You want to upsell your ‘students’ as much as possible. Get your ‘students’ hooked on your products.
You never tell them the truth: the reason you’re so rich, is because of all the products you’ve sold them. NOT because of your dropshipping or Amazon FBA business.
BACKLASH AGAINST FAKE GURUS
Thankfully, there has been a rise in backlash against these so-called fake gurus. Thanks to channels like Coffeezilla (otherwise known as Coffee Break), Mike Winnet, and Spencer Cornelia to name a few.

Important Clarification: 1) I want to emphasise that I think online education is BRILLIANT - my issue with this industry is not to do with the selling of online courses. Online courses have helped me learn how to edit this exact video, and every other video on the channel. The problem with “fake guru’s” is… 2) The Marketing. The biggest problem with “fake gurus” is their deceptive marketing. There’s nothing wrong with selling a course on dropshipping, but marketing it as a lifestyle product, and framing it as though everyone who buys the course has a high chance of gaining “financial freedom” is just clear deception. The majority of students will NOT attain that goal, and yet gurus will pedal their courses as though it is near guaranteed. Even when a guru says “you have to put in the work” momentarily during their webinar, it does not negate the other 50+ minutes they’ve spent trying to make it look like it’s an easy game - at this point, the viewer is so attached to the idea of it being easy that a one-time mention of “you have to put in the work” will fly above their heads.

I do believe that there are some channels that really are good to listen to like a young man named Graham Stephan who talks about Real Estate. It is sometimes difficult to tell good from bad, but I would like to hear some channels that you think are legitimately helpful :)

Yes! There absolutely are “good apples” in this niche. As a matter of fact, Graham Stephan inspired me to start my own channel 😉. Other examples of my own personal favourites are Meet Kevin, Andrei Jikh, Nate O Brien, and just recently I’ve been looking at Alex Becker’s videos after he did a complete 180 on his content and quit the “make money online” niche - he has some really good content.

I fell victim to this about 6yrs ago. Went to a seminar in Florida on how to start and create a profitable business. I was desperate because of continuous struggle and I wanted a better life (financially). The initial event was around $75. The info was all generalized. Then went to another event and it was free since I paid for the previous one. The catch is that at the end of the second event. They offer all the info you actually needed and someone to contact if you had any questions. But to get this it was around $1,000. I saw people actually pushing each other and scrambling like ants. I actually was thinking twice...did it because I was desperate and thought it was going to benefit me. At the end...I was in the hole $1000 dollars and felt I gain nothing from it. I did learn one thing that only I can create something for myself. Currently working to hone my digital art skills and create my own path.

@@AR-kg2xz Wait a few months. He's going to sell something for sure. His videos are truthy, however, this is ALSO how he hooks people. By saying "They are all wrong, here you can hear the truth and only the truth", so people eventually become to trust this guy, and if he releases a course, they would rationalize that course being useful. Now, I'm not saying this is what's going to happen, but more likely it will. If you want to get rich, there's only one way: do the fucking work and stop looking for shortcuts.

In my opinion, making a smart investment is not only a technique for earning passive income, but also a profitable way of saving for future expenses. People who fail to make the proper judgments early in life often come to regret it later in life. Nonetheless, investing alone can be difficult and risky. As a result, I recommend obtaining expert assistance (financial advisors). The challenge is not just watching videos and reading investing books; it is about implementing information effectively.

I almost fell for one. She made it look so believable. Even had a reasonable ebook cost and her sessions were like 100-200 for a one on one session. But she was offering training for Amazon fba and making it seem like anybody could get rich off of it, but when she would speak on how to profit off of it I realized you’re not actually profiting anything because Amazon takes more than half of your money. So then it clicked that the reason why she was doing Amazon fba AND offering consultation and e books was because she knew it wasn’t actually guaranteed profit. So she was really making money off of selling a dream to her followers.
@hiimjonpaul
@hiimjonpaul 6 ай бұрын
Hi Steph, I’m not saying that lady is right. She is wrong about it being easy. She is right about amazon FBA. And it is very profitable. But it’s not easy. It’s not fast. And you will want to budget about 10-20k to launch your product. Am I a guru? No but I should be. I think there are real people and fake people. I’ve been doing e-commerce since I was 23 and now I’m 40. And I’ve considered training and coaching people not because amazon or e-commerce doesn’t pay. Because actually I get great joy from actually helping people. And as of late I’m quite tired of what I do. And want to connect and help others. Anyway, if you have any questions. Post them here. I really don’t have anything to sell you 😂 (sounds like I do after watching this) but no really. I have nothing to sell. But happy to point you in the right direction. One thing is for sure on amazon. - PRODUCT RESEARCH like crazy to find opportunities. - You can not sell what everybody else is selling. - yes, amazon takes plenty. Pick/pack/final value then you have your PPC costs. It means Come up with a unique product. Find the opportunity. Creat a very high quality product. Like the best. Then make sure you can resell it for 4x what you bought. You can get away with 3x but really you want that 4x There - there’s your $200 from that other lady :) 👍🏼

I changed my life with online courses. I probably spent around $1,500. How you ask? I took IT related courses on various IT certificates (this was the cheap part, maybe under $100). Then as I finished those courses I took the tests to get certified. This was the expensive part (over a $1,000 for all the certs I got)...then I applied for lots of jobs and started my IT career. I'm not a millionaire...but I am comfortable...O yea and I don't sell shit to anybody I work in IT.

the format you chose, to weave in hypothetical conversation directly between a skeptical mark and the fake guru was a great choice. anytime a lesson can be encapsulated within a dialogue it allows a teacher to pack so much more information into their words. it also keeps things light, and stops the constant stream of qualifying oneself one tends to do before every 'factual' statement. top marks dude

Thanks for posting this. I’ve heard several ads from these gurus online and was very curious about them. I’m way too poor to purchase and my instincts told me it probably wasn’t worth the bank they ask. I am amazed at how all the dishonest models have so much in common: cults, MLM, gurus, and probably TONS of others use the same or very similar tactics. I’d love to see a video comparing the similarities. I think that would help people realize what they are dealing with no matter what the package looks like. It’s the same deal with new makeup and hairdo.

Since then I have never felt comfortable dealing with the pushy, doomsday, limited time type of business. If I can't get even one thing of value out of your pitch, not even one nugget then why should I pay you money for more emptiness. I really appreciate this video for confirming what I've always thought about these kinds of fake gurus. I mean if it's so valuable why do you put a time limit on it. Why not be evergreen. YTACRelax well that’s just it, they aren’t technically breaking any laws, and they do one important thing: they make people feel good about themselves. Look at people who buy into it - those who are dissatisfied with their life, those who want more success, those who want recognition, those who want to change but can’t do it themselves. Sound familiar? I’ve probably just described about 90% of the population. There have been “gurus” promoting all sorts just to make money, the medium in which this is done is somewhat changed although they still tap into deep seated insecurities and desires. You need to only look at a topic like dieting to see the similar approach - promises of a new life, a new you, if only you follow my tried and tested steps. Most of the time, what do they have in common? Promises of an easy victory with little work (or less work than you currently do), a radical change in your life, an easy “solution” which you can buy into and feel like you should have seen it. It’s flashy, attention grabbing, the person is charismatic and they show you the “results” of their method. What they actually deliver is bits of information, or presentations filled with vague terms and little actual content. This leaves you feeling like they are intelligent and knowledgeable, but you need to know more (because they didn’t actually tell you much). And if you don’t succeed, it isn’t their fault, its yours, because you haven’t done X. I can completely understand why some people get taken in, and it’s a bit like a religion, it fills the void in their life. If it isn’t illegal and going to be stopped by external forces, then I can see why people don’t give up on them easily either.

Ahh! But there is definitely a good reason for asking for money for the course! They'll just say, "I'm only asking for $$$. I ask for this because people tend to value courses that cost money. It motivates you to perform, to take action. For example, if this course was free, you wouldn't take what I say seriously. You won't take action! It devalues this program, and wastes your time, my time, and everyone's time. Hence I'm only asking for $$$, which should also help cover the costs for hiring my video editor. Thank you." ^ Direct experience here. I didn't fall for it, my mother did. And she is still in that cult.

Hard to admit, I was a uni student in my first year in the pandemic, worried about the future and lonely and almost got roped into following a spiritual guru. Started off as innocent until I was very close to spending £500 on their course out of my overdraft. My flatmates stopped me, but I was convinced they were just 'negative' and 'scared of my growth'. I've always thought myself as rational, everyone is until they hit a rough patch, please be careful when you see a guru's ad because it can happen to anyone in the wrong moment

My wife and I ran into a very friendly young couple at target the other night. They had just moved to town and asked us for things to do in the area. They casually mention they’re quitting their jobs soon because they met a guy who retired at 22, and they’re going to follow his program. 30 minutes later we saw them again, empty shopping cart, telling another young couple about it. I have no doubt they were trying to recruit others that night. We dodged a bullet there!

What a concise description, I've just gone through 2 (initial) programmes with 2 different guru's who basically do exactly what you have said (not gonna mention who they are sorry). Today I decided that they were simply too good to be true, I was nearly 'had' for a moment. The points that you made resonated with my (same) conclusions. For me they did not provide enough clarity (intentionally) and they do not practice what they preach either. Alarm bells were ringing throughout all the webinars, websites, blueprints, etc etc. I asked one of the so called millionaires "if it's it's too good to be true then it usually is", he replied along the lines of, "well no actually, if it's too good to be true then you have stumbled across something amazing and should do it". REALLY! See ya. The other company said that's the offer should be £20k+ but today it's £2k... Seriously 🤣. You mentioned the word "Value", this term is floated around a lot and means different things to different people but the 'price value' that they put on things is simply plucked out of thin air.

In all three cases I got the refund because I could tell it wouldn't deliver what it promised.
