The Rise Of Genetic Engineering (2022)
Writers: Kyle McCabe, Christopher Webb Young
Stars: Rodolphe Barrangou, George Church, Mary Beth Dallas
Genre: Documentary
Country: United States
Language: English
Release Date: August 24, 2022 (United States)
Synopsis:
Genetic Engineering extends far beyond the controversial news headlines that obsess over ‘designer babies’. In the science community, gene-editing tools like CRISPR and PRIME editing will do nothing less than save the planet.
Methods like this allow scientists to alter and ‘re-program’ the genetics of living organisms.
This episode shows scientists at large using gene-editing technologies to revolutionize the food supply chain, bolstering food crops to prevent famines, and even speed up reforestation efforts that will reverse global warming. Genetic Engineering in farm animals is helping scientists to ‘select’ desirable traits, like physical features and gender. Incredibly, one scientist is using gene-editing technologies to resurrect the DNA of extinct species, like the Wooly Mammoth!
Despite some public concern, gene-editing is definitely a cause for hope in the fight against genetic disorders in humans. It’s already reversing a type of congenital blindness in children. And with the hyper-precision afforded by PRIME editing being prepared for clinical trials, a much more hopeful world will be revealed for families in the future.

Then you'll have to find what protein makes that possible. Gene is the precursor of a specific protein that will be made through several processes (transcription, translation, etc). Sure CRISPR "edits" living creatures, but still gene editing is limited to the power of proteins, either as signals, structure, or many more.

If we could use crisper to grow foods in the deserts, that would go along way in diminishing food scarcity.

Why wouldn’t we instead use CRISPR to enhance the growth rate and strength of plants to be able to then use existing farm areas, where we could use these farms all year round instead of taking up more land. Because in this case we could even reduce the amount of farms we have and make plants and foods more efficient and have an abundance as a result.

Genetic engineering is kinda the evolved form of eugenics. Life is a phenomenon we naturally will try and harness and when we alter life to fulfill "Human" needs and desires unfortunately has unforseen consequences .❤ Trial and error ❤

Very one sided commentary. The quantum complexity of the DNA must be respected. The non local effect on the molecule as a whole by cutting and splicing parts of it will have long term consequences that we cannot foresee. Personally, I find it a terrifying prospect

I too thought that, perhaps after a few generations a genetically modified crop might show unwanted changes which might just be toxic, but I think scientist would make something commercial or publically availably only after lots of testing & precautious measures, Plus there might just be some new researches in the future on ways to completely eliminate these long term unwanted changes, I hope that it would be done before we face those consequences

If someone has an incurable disease, I think editing is worth the risk! Try to imagine yourself or someone you love suffering and they had something that might “cure” or improve your or their life! Sure we’ll make mistakes but with AI we can rapidly improve our understanding

What evidence do you have from plant or animal experiments? We have been doing this for many plant and animal generations now, so your presumed "quantum" effects should have shown up. (Not really quantum though, quantum effects are sub-atomic, and that is not the level of genetic modification, so I don't think it is correct to speak of non-local effects in the context of genetic modification. Remember, nature does this all the time, literally all the time. Nothing is risk free, but let's keep things in perspective.)

Remember No jab No job. We must never forget WHO coerced and emotionally blackmailed the children for use as shields, to temporarily and marginally "protect" adults. Thou shall not use pregnant women as Granny shields. Risking the young to "save" the old is rotten to the core.
