How did the Low Countries become a republic? The Dutch Republic was a confederacy that was established in 1588. It happened when the Eighty Years' War (the Dutch Revolt) was going on for twenty years. The Reformation early 1500s caused many people in the Low Countries to turn to Protestantism. Spanish ruler Charles V and his son Phillips II started to prosecute these so-called heretics (Calvinists). Many of them burned at the stake. Dutch nobles handed in the Supplication of the Nobles (Smeekschrift der Edelen). After this the prosecutions were halted. The Protestants started with Hedge-Preaches (Hagenpreken) what followed by the Iconoclastic Fury (Beeldenstorm). Phillips II sent Duke Alva (known as Iron Alva) to restore order. Many people fled the Low Countries. One of them was William of Orange (Willem van Oranje) who went to the German states. He returned with an army in 1568 and the Dutch Revolt (De Opstand) started. William of Orange was assisted by the Sea Beggars (Watergeuzen) to fight off the Spanish. Spain fought back but went bankrupt several times. Spanish troops mutineed and sacked Antwerp. This was known as the Spanish Fury (Spaanse Furie). With the Pacification of Ghent (Pacificatie van Gent) were the Dutch provinces (Catholic or Protestant) united themselves against Spanish aggression. What followed was the Act of Abjuration (Plakkaat van Verlatinghe). In 1588 the Dutch Republic (Republiek der Zeven Verenigde Nederlanden) was established.

Dutch become a republic when everyone was a monarchy and a monarchy when everyone was becoming a republic
@HistoryHustle
@HistoryHustle 3 жыл бұрын
Kinda yes. Although when the United Kingdom of the Netherlands was declared many countries went 'back' to monarchy also because it was the time of the so-called Restauration. It was mid-19th century that a new wave of revolutions started that ended several monarchies. Also in the turbulent 20th century the Dutch monarchy survived.

I often refer lovingly to the Dutch Republic as the oxymoron of early modern European history. It amazes me that the Dutch navy and marines instigated the only successful invasion (1667) of England since 1066.

Indeed, yet, let us not forget, also many people lived in poverty in the Dutch Republic (and Europe of course). Life back then was a struggle. Yet, the performances of the Dutch Republic can be admired.

@@HistoryHustle Being Canadian-born of Frisian ancestry, it is great to be able to fill in the blanks on Dutch history and know my roots. Any understanding of European and Dutch history is very limited here below the college level apart from World Wars 1 & 2 -- and that largely from a British and North American perspective. Thanks again so much for your presentations. I really like the ones related to the 80 Years War. Do you have any episodes related to the Napoleonic period?? Apparently my surname/achternamme was registered in 1811.

Dutch are really cool when it comes to sea the Discovered the southern tip of Africa as well as Australia and New Zealand ❤️ But One Think make me Wonder always They're was already a Dutch Republic Then if Netherlands ever choose to become republic again will it be called " Republic of Netherlands " or "Second Dutch Republic" ? 😅

The first republic? What about Venice, Genoa, etc .... and the most obvious of all: Ancient Rome.
@HistoryHustle
@HistoryHustle 4 жыл бұрын
In Early Modern Times so that rules out ancient Rome. As for Venice and Genoa you're right. What I actually meant is that the Dutch Republic is the first republic that as a country still exists today. Venice, Genoa are now part of Italy.

@@HistoryHustleand it actually does not exist as a republic... According to Jan de Vries, the Low Countries was the first modern nation. So basically you're saying 'this was the first republic in the period that we can modern which started with this republic'. That's what you mean with 'hustling'? 😉😉😉

Hey Stefan for what I know from this period you took some short cut. First to understand the spreading of what is called the 'Reformation' you have to have in mind that the players in the international trade initially between Bruges and other sea territories was controlled by the ' Hanze' such these of Hamburg. At that moment Brugges and Ieper were passee, the access to these cities was bogged down and as such not accessible anymore. So the main trade city was Antwerp , were the first insurrection against the Spanish rulers erupted. Before Brussels you had Malines (Mechelen) which was the power centre (Het Verbond der Gulden Vlies) . An epidemy and a blast in a gunpowder storage made fled the power elite from Mechelen to Brussels and never came back. Also the true name of the Dutch leader Willem , is not Willem van Oranje. Most of the troops in those years were mercenaries whose loyalty depended of the highest bidder, so since the could change side even in the middle of battle, they were not identifiable as later armies will become , so the wore a distinctive colour rub ban , for Willem and his armies this was Oranje. The real name of Willem, which is still the official name of the Dutch Royal Family which they use to travel privately is 'van Dooren ', I could be wrong I did not check while writing this but I have in me that they originated from Friesland .

Good spul, man! En die kaart achter je, ik ben jaloers. However, i do wish you'd learn to pronounce the word "country" properly, especially when talking about countries...
