Among the many sinister foes faced by the heroes of Middle earth, the Nazgul are perhaps the most visually striking and fear inspiring of all those who came into the service of the Dark Lord Sauron. In this video I talk about how the Ringwraiths came to be, to recap their activity before the events of the Lord of the Rings trilogy and to highlight some of the powers and abilities that contributed to their fearful reputation.

As formidable as the Wraiths are in the 3rd age, they are also a sign of how much of a lesser being Sauron was in comparison to his master. Sauron had some guys on horseback. Morgoth had dragons and balrogs. Sauron had rings, Morgoth had Silmarils. This is the fantasy version of "Do you have any idea who my dad is?"

It never ceases to amaze me how much lore there is in Tolkien's LOTR universe. The Nazgul were some of the coolest enemies in the book and movie series. The scene in The Followship of the Ring movie where Aragorn fights off all the Nazgul was excellent.

About the Witch in particular is how his fall was foretold by Glorfindel in the Second Age. The city of Arthedain the Numenorians forged blades designed to kill this servant of Sauron yet he escaped. This blade however was taken by Tom Bombadil from the barrows downs centuries later and given to Merry, who then used it to stab the Witch King at the battle of the Pelanor Field., allowing Éowyn to strike him down and fulfill Glorfindel’s prophecy.

Thank you, I should have scoward your channel to see what else you cover since I am always here for any and all Dune Lore. This was a great find and the first of many for me to review. I am curious as to how the nine were manipulated, was it as cunning as one could imagine or more simplistic and straightforward. Also, how did the elves discover the evil behind the creation of the rings? You have explain both questions in other videos, so I will keep on watching, but thank you so much for the video!

1:48 It's not mainly men's desire for power, as the PJ films makes it sound. The "darkening" of Numenor took place on the course of centuries, merely because of their envy of the Elves' immortality. Their ever growing distain to Iluvatar's gift and to the Valar was already massive, before Sauron hammered the last nail. 4:39 We don't actually know that. It's not written anywhere. In fact, the only times we read anything about a Nazgul being hurt, is when Merry stabs the Witch King with the Barrow Blade (and after that, Eowyn has the final blow, in the last of her strength). We don't actually see them fighting anyone sword to sword (they fought Gandalf on Amon-Sûl, of course, but we have no idea how it took place). The "Black Breath" has greater effect on those who are already in despair. Which is why Merry recovered so quickly; whereas for Eowyn it took all of Aragon's skill and ultimately Faramir's compassion, who made her realize there is much worth to live for expect for vanity. 6:35 All of them were blind and relied in their steeds for better navigation. But when Sauron was convinced he has to begin his attack early (because he feared Aragorn had the Ring), he invested a greater power into the Witch King and inflamed him with great malice. They didn't assail their targets during the day, or where there was light, because light brings us hope. In the dark and gloom, there are shadows and strange noises and our hearts sink. That is when the Nazgul are most dangerous, when you are already either afraid, or desperate, and especially when you are alone. So they come at night when it's dark and scary. As we see, Aragorn actually advice the Hobbits to keep the camp fire going, when it was obvious the Nazgul where approaching.

Thank you! I'm still friends with a few of the big LOTR youtubers and I'm curious to see their reactions as the show comes out. I'm personally VERY pessimistic about the show but if someone likes it then I hold nothing against them. I'm sure I'll use some images from the new show in my lore videos (mostly whatever WETA has designed). I seriously doubt I'll be covering the lore of whatever fan fiction time compressed storylines Amazon dreams up.

I hear from people a lot that they seem to think the numenoreans what have put the smackdown on the ringwraiths. While yes, the numenoreans were far better equipped to deal with the ringwraiths then the peoples of the third age, we must also remember that the main fear the numenoreans had was of dying. That's what the ring wraiths fear is all about. Fear of the unknown. Fear of death. It makes sense that while the numenoreans were better equipped to defend from them, The Ringwraiths actually most likely affected them even worse than normal men. This is why when the ring wraiths showed up in 2254 I believe, they were able to terrorize the coastal cities and settlements of the numenoreans for a good long while. Nobody was ever able to kill them even the numenoreans, who held sway in much of Middle-earth at that point. Just goes to show how effective the ring wraiths were

I'm thrilled that you're doing Lord of Rings content also! Middle-Earth was my first love. Even before Dune. I am now no longer excited for the new amazon series. I tried for so long to be. But from the start the red flags waved and now... Now I am glad that I didn't get too excited. Less heart-break. That they thought doing a story set in the Second Age, whilst having No rights to the Unfinished Tales or the Silmarilion was a good idea, is disappointing. But, there is obviously such a wealth of Middle-Earth material for you to make content on, that I would be enthusiastic to see you do more.

The nazgul on fell beasts descend on osgiliath..... the moment is ripe.. the 50 elite archers held back for just this moment launch volley after volley of arrows.. each fitted with a mithril head.. made from a few fairly useless helmets... Nazgul die.... except the Lord of the nazgul .. for he can not be killed by the hand of man.. so it has long been stated... and as long stated and analysed the 10 women with heavy crossbows loaded by male bearers unload on him and that's how he fell.. 37.2 seconds into the nazgul assault... In mordor sauron shats himself... The orks seeing the nazgul cut down break and flee suffering 82462 casualties vs several thousand horse archers that have moved up in support.... In mordor sauron shats himself... That's what would have happened if Kenny from southpark was steward and not Mr dick

@@NerdCookies Oh Netd Cookies, don't let the Shadows take you. I grew up reading about the Lord of Rings, and Simarillian thinking they would never be a time were they would make a show or movies. I remember in 1980's a.Hollywood reporter asking a major Studio CEO if they plan to make a Lord of the Rings movie, he sarcastically laugh in his face. I was so disheartened. The Nine have multiple names....titles, nicknames, etc Of the Numenoreans ...Murazor, Andunaphael & Ankhorahil. Some will say these were given by ICE for their RPG but they have some basis in other sources. Of these three...Adunaphael is the only one that could not be independantly confirmed in other sources. It is said that the 3rd of the Nine was female and is refered to as the Knight of Umbar...where she ruled disguised as a Black Numenorean lord for many years. Ankhorahil is the Nazgul who wields a staff in the Battle of Dol Guldor....in the Hobbit. He was a powerful sorceror...second only to Murazor the Witchking of Angmar. He is refered to as the Shadow Lord. Murazor is a high lord of Numenor...one if the first kings of the "Black Numenorean" refugees that worshiped Morgoth. He is the Witchking of Angmar Of the Southron and Easterlings...beside Khamul....there is Indur and Dwar. Indur was a king of the Haradrim...and he has been called the Dwimmerlaik as he was great torment to Rohirrim. Dwar wass a King of the Dog People east of the Sea of Rhun. He was known as the Dark Marshal. The last three are of lesser men races. Lossoth, Horseman and supposedly Umbari. Feodrath was a lord of the Laplander like Lossoth...known as the undying. Ren was known as the Tainted. and Uvatha Lord of Horses was the last...refered to as the Betrayer

I hope the upcoming Amazon Original "Rings of Power" addresses this. I hate this idea that all these Nazgul were all cis men, it literally makes no sense. They seem to have taken a very serious attempt to add some diversity to Middle Earth and it was severly lacking. I hope we see a fresh take on this and other things, there is no reason why some or all the Nagul could not have been female, bipoc or non-normative.
