Capcom could not translate this Rival Schools adventure game, but in this retrogaming educational video I'm giving you the rundown of what you're missing out on with this japanese-exclusive mode in Rival Schools.
Is it just a dating sim?

Rival Schools' PlayStation one port offers an amazing array of exclusive features, but the Nekketsu Seishun Nikki mode offers so much value on its own that it could've been its own release... And, eventually, that's pretty much what came to be!

i believe this version was quite popular in south america. the disc was pirated and sold a lot in street markets, and it wasnt uncommon to unlock consoles here either. i didnt understand a thing everyone said, but id try to memorize the "good" choices that didnt fuck up my run. made tons of characters too.

Capcom artist Edayan´s art for Justice Gakuen games is just stunning. Lot of manganime potential. If Capcom would do a remaster or a sequel for this game they may use that style. I just miss that last age of Capcom arcade games, all those titles like Vampire, Star Gladiator, Cyberbots, Tech Romancer, Power Stone... woah... All they were so beautifully done...
@Goati_
@Goati_ 3 ай бұрын
agree, their titles all had character. A remaster or sequel wouldn't really be in the cards though as modern fighting games need to be big finetuned competitive games...

unfortunately a patch would be a massive undertaking as the game has *a lot* of text, plus hacking it into a fan translation is usually the hard part too...

I want to see more about this game and its sequel! Maybe even a bit more about the character creation aspect of it. Like how you change appearance and stuff.
@Goati_
@Goati_ 6 ай бұрын
There isn't much going on with the character creation, just choosing between a couple of face features (eyebrows, eyes, nose, mouth) and then picking a few personality traits and interests that I didn't find changed anything. I think the appeal of the mode is interacting with the actual characters, there isn't much going on of interest with the custom ones

Too much text to translate? Here's a radical idea: Have someone who understands English write translated text while you're making the game, so that if you want to port the game to English later, they don't have to go in and translate the entire thing from scratch.
@Goati_
@Goati_ 2 жыл бұрын
would be nice, but that's an entire work of translation, localization and implementation not to be taken lightly... Needs dedicated effort from a professional, they had to balance profits I guess
@lurkerrekrul
@lurkerrekrul 2 жыл бұрын
@@Goati_ I've never understood the obsession with localization. I mean, sure there are people who would rather play a game with characters named Bob and Sue rather than Hiro and Yuki, but there are people out there trying to play these games untranslated. People watch subtitled anime. I think a game translated to English, but not localized would do fine. As for balancing profits, I would think that whatever they would make by having a game be playable worldwide would offset whatever it would cost to make an English (or other language version). In fact, they could probably find game enthusiasts who would do it for free. I mean, people already make translation patches for games, with no help whatsoever from the company, and that involves partially reverse engineering the game (you can't do a straight search/replace from Japanese to English). Think if a company said "We want to bring this game to English markets, but need someone to translate the text. We will supply volunteers with a complete script for the game." It just frustrates me that so many games are Japanese exclusives. And while people have translated some games, they never seem to do the ones that I want.
@Goati_
@Goati_ 2 жыл бұрын
@@lurkerrekrul While I can't know about the intricacies about the business decision or the coding difficulties (which might be very severe: the game has an astounding LOAD of text), I can speak for the translation part. You can't just translate Japanese to English, you are required to do some degree of what's referred to as localization as well, you need to adapt the text and you need it to make it readable, because if you only translate it it's going to sound weird. The first thing they teach you at the university here is to never translate Japanese literally, although you are asked to do so during tests to see if you understand the meanings :) I am nowhere near a professional translator or expert in localizations, but I know enough to tell you that while you bring up a good point, it is definitely not something to be underestimated
@lurkerrekrul
@lurkerrekrul 2 жыл бұрын
@@Goati_ OK, I always understood "localization" to mean adapting things like names and expressions to better appeal to local audiences. Like changing Japanese names to more common western ones, changing expressions and jokes to ones that would make sense to the local audience etc. I didn't realize that it also referred to the process of changing the grammar to make sure that everything makes sense. I always assumed that was just a standard part of the translation process and that localization was something separate. I know that many other languages can't be translated literally and still make sense. It's too bad that it's not possible to machine translate the Japanese text in games so that I could have some idea of what it says. I once tried to cut out some text from a screenshot of the options button (which I only knew because it took me to the options page) of a game and ran OCR software on it. It failed miserably. It was a Gundam strategy war game for the PS1 that I was trying to figure out how to play. I only managed to figure out about 50-60% of it.
@Goati_
@Goati_ 2 жыл бұрын
@@lurkerrekrul there's a lot of robot strategy game translations you might like for retro games, look up the Nebulous group. Anyway translation is translation and localization is localization, the two go along together and you do need both, character name changes or not :D
