We are making the presentations from our 2021 Annual Conference available to the public! We hope you enjoy.
The American Battlefield Trust preserves America’s hallowed battlegrounds and educates the public about what happened there and why it matters. We permanently protect these battlefields for future generations as a lasting and tangible memorial to the brave soldiers who fought in the American Revolution, the War of 1812, and the Civil War.

Norman Hall (45:00 into the video, the first Army river crossing under fire) grew up in my hometown, Monroe, MI. At Fort Sumter, it was Hall who rescued the American flag from burning and he parlayed with the Confederates. He also fought at The Angle during Pickett's charge. Monroe's museum has his battle flag, which has "Forlorn Hope" sewn into it. Incidentally, Monroe is also where George Armstrong Custer grew up. Custer received the flag of surrender from the Army of Northern Virginia on the field, which led to Lee and Grant sitting down to sign the surrender at Appomattox. So, Monroe boys were there to start the war, stop the Confederates at the High Water mark, and to effectively end the war as well.

Fredericksburg also had a Catholic Church (which speaks to its level of development as they weren’t all that common at the time in VA towns), as well as James Monroe’s law office, the Masonic lodge that G. Washington was inducted at, the tavern Jefferson wrote the VA Declaration of Religious Freedom at, etc.

Great presentation! I've always wanted more info on this unique stage of fighting in town which most historians seem to gloss over. Thank you!

Great show my guy!!! I've been trying to get your subs up as you are great. I been a fanatic on history since a child and the War of the Rebellion was my passion. I hold two masters in history and I studied Fredericksburg to great length. Why Lee didn't learn from this battle the lesson of forcing the North to attack you on fortified ground I'll never know. Sometime when I have time I can prove the war could have been over after the 2nd day at Gettysburg. Again thanks for your hard work.

What is it about Civil War story tellers and historians that they like to tell it with future tense with smatterings of past tense? “He is going to send three armies . . .”. There has to be a reason behind this tradition. My guess is some respected historian spoke this way, then others followed then others copied the copiers.
